Book Synopsis:
The Slow Regard of Silent Things is set at The University, where the brightest minds work to unravel the mysteries of enlightened sciences, such as artificing and alchemy. Auri, a former student (and a secondary but influential character from Rothfuss’s earlier novels) now lives alone beneath the sprawling campus in a maze of ancient and abandoned passageways. There in The Underthing, she feels her powers and learns to see the truths that science—and her former classmates—have overlooked.

The release date is October 28th and Amazon says I will get my copy by 11/6. Can we have a start date of 11/6 then?

Is anyone else planning on reading this?

I've requested it from the library but don't see me having it anywhere near 11/6. If you haven't started already when I get it I'd be happy to join in. I might change my mind and buy it because I like Rothfuss a lot. But I don't know yet.

I got the book and started reading. It sounds like this one will be all about Auri, but I'm not sure where this one starts. Could it be the first book?

I saw thus thread and thought Book 3 of The Kingkiller Chronicle had been released. It was like I had taken a ride in a tune machine for Halloween. Maybe next year...

I should really stop using the app and trusting auto-correct. Should be a time machine in my previous post. And "this" instead of "thus". A tune machine sounds like how my grandma would describe an iPod.

Best book I have read in 2014! Read it in one sitting, in just a few hours; it's short but it's magical.

I just started reading it. Seems interesting. The foreword was kind of funny. "Don't buy this book!" It was too late for me. ;)

Lisarenee, this book is all about Auri; it is her story, where she is "at" now. It doesn't really fit into Rothfuss's first 2 books, other than it is about Auri, one of the characters in those books. It is really a side story.

I didn't expect illustrations. How nice. It kind of reminds me of The Graveyard Book.

That's what I was thinking too Jessica, that it reminded me of Gaiman's The Graveyard Book in style (not in story).

I'll try to get a copy this weekend and join in! I though I'll read this first before Name of the Wind.

I finished the book. It's suggested to re-read it. I'm going to re-read it because I feel like I will get more from it. I haven't read Name of the Wind but I will. I think I've lost out on a lot because I didn't read it yet. This is why I'm going to re-read it.

I figured I could read this because it was kind of just a side story about Auri. Since I didn't know much about her from not reading the first book I haven't made that connection with her which makes me feel like I've lost out in the experience when reading the story.

Kathleen, you said you haven't read Name of the Wind yet anyone else in the same boat or did everyone read the first two books before starting this?

Hm, reading your comment about not being able to connect with Auri makes me rethink reading this before Name of the Wind. Maybe I'll wait til I'm about halfway of the first book before reading this at least I wpuld have met Auri by then.

I just finished chapter 1. I had a hard time getting into the narrative at first. But I've grown to like it. I've read Name of the Wind, and I don't think this story would make as much sense without having read the other books. It definitely helps you understand the nature of Auri's strangeness.

I have also read the first two books...I have a feeling it would be difficult to really appreciate this book without knowing Auri from the other books. I haven't had time to start yet...hoping for tomorrow!

I didn't read either of the 2 books. I didn't know there were others so I'm going to skip this book until I have read the others. I don't like when a story doesn't make senses.

Yeah that's what I thought. I don't want to feel lost :)

I've finished reading through page 58 and it is very interesting so far. Auri is so unique and it's nice to look through her eyes. What a world she lives in- the Underthing is so immense and I'm so curious as to how there are so many rooms that are deserted with so much left behind. Reading about her wanting a nice sheet for her bed and feeling guilty for that desire did make me a little sad for her.

Hi Greta. I imagined the Underthing was like our sewer pipe system here in the big city or our underground subways. There are probably lots of rooms down there for construction and tunnel workers, repairmen, etc., to put their tools etc., have a coffee at break time...

The furnished Under Rooms made me picture an area that maybe at one time had a "cave in", like, maybe after an earthquake, or something of that nature. I figured that's why the tables, vanities, sofas etc., were there as if stopped in time, covered in dust, and the reason no valuables had been taken by the owners (like if they had moved, etc.).

Just my interpretation...

Cathie, that does sound like what I'm imagining too. Just so interesting that everything connects together and that Auri can access it all.

Yes, Kaora- that must have a lot to do with why she is existing the way she is right now.

I just finished this and although there wasn't a whole lot of action in the book, I just loved it. Rothfuss did such a wonderful job of describing Auri's world and her thoughts. I think if you go in expecting a different sort of story, you could be disappointed, but I had read Rothfuss' review and was prepared. I will definitely read this again, maybe after I reread the first two books in the series.

And, since this was as brand new book, and smells so yummy, I am thinking Auri would appreciate a copy of a book about her...just for how smooth the paper is and how wonderful it smells. Maybe it will be my gift to her on the seventh day when I see her...

Great question Erin; I'll have to ponder that one for awhile. Oh, now you've done it, my brain is thinking...

I have love anything that is crystal like; prisms, glass crystal ornaments, etc. i have a mini globe of the world that sits on a small square glass pedestal on my bedroom window that reflects light and sometimes shines in the moonlight or appears rainbow prismed in the sunlight in summer, if the sunlight hits it just right :-).

I think I would like Auri to "read" this and then find out where she would place it, so it would be in it's right place :-)

That sounds like a lovely little object, and I would love to hear what Auri has to say about it, too!

To answer my own question, I think I would like for her to read my teddy bear that I have had since I was born. It is such a special item to me, and I want to make sure it is always happy and in exactly its right place.

I am just over halfway through, and it is so lovely and strange and beautiful...

I could be forgetting a lot from NotW and WMF, but do we ever find out why Auri lives in the Underthing? Like, how she came to be there?
