BOTM for January
Randomizer: The Grass Is SingingThe Grass Is Singing
Popular Vote: The Drowned and the Saved

It's the start of a new year. In January are authors will be from LeGuin to Malouf. Books 600 pages and past 2 years are excluded from current voting.

Voting: voting is open from the 15 to the 23. I will announce the winner of the popular and randomizer on the 24. Everyone gets 1 free vote. You can use an additional 4 points if you have participation points to use. You can vote for 1 or 5 books depending on number of participation points and how you wish to distribute those. Feel free to try to get people to join you in trying to get your book to be the winner.

Send a PM to the bookshelf personality with your votes. You can send them to me also. Just saying what you want here in the topic will not get your vote counted.

Amanda Dawn | 1660 comments I've red 30 of these ones. So pretty good chances for selection of something I haven't read. Out of the ones I haven't gotten to yet, the ones I'm most interested in are:

1) The female Quixote (on librivox and will be on my TBR if not selected)
2) Lost Language of Cranes (audible) (might end up on my tbr too)
3)A Hero of our Time (audible and librivox)
4) Small Island (audible)
5)Monica ~100 pgs
6)Under the Volcano (audible)

I've only read 17 of these and find it hard to be inspired by any. Not sure why. On my tbr pile is
Under the Volcano, its been there a long time and would like to get it read.

message 4: by Gail (new)

Gail (gailifer) | 2095 comments Under the Volcano is on my Random list and has been all year....I would like to read it but it is evidently so depressing that it never calls to me. Thankfully the Random list starts over in January!
I have only read 8 of these so again, almost anything will be new for me.
I think I might vote for a Wyndham Lewis if anyone else is looking to read one of his.

message 5: by Valerie (new)

Valerie Brown | 835 comments I have no strong feelings about any of the choices (that I haven't read). I would be interested in: Get Shorty, or Under the Volcano, or The Lost Language of Cranes.

I know I can borrow Get Shorty from the library, Under the Volcano has quite a line up on the Overdrive system, but if I get on the wait list soon I may get it for January. The Lost Language of Cranes is available right now on overdrive!

Anyhow, it looks like some of you might be keen on Under the Volcano - if that continues to be so I will throw my 5 votes that way.

message 6: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Dawn | 1660 comments I could also go for under the volcano if that's how people are feeling: but might split my votes with Lost Languages of Cranes because I want to read that one.

message 7: by Diane (last edited Nov 16, 2019 04:51PM) (new)

Diane | 2044 comments I have read 33 and most of the ones previously mentioned. These are the ones available to me:

The Female Quixote
LaBrava
Shikasta
If Not Now, When?
The Drowned and the Saved
Self-Condemned
Tarr
Martin Eden
The Iron Heel
H Is for Hawk
A Man of Feeling
Wild Harbour

message 8: by Daisey (new)

Daisey | 330 comments I don't know that any of these are particularly catching my attention. With that being said, Under the Volcano sounds like something that will definitely be easier to get through with a group and it is available from my library, so I'm willing to vote for it.

I would love to read more Primo Levi. Those books are on my radar. If you want me to vote for one let me know.

I have a copy that has both books, so I would be happy to read either one.

How about The Drowned and the Saved? That would finish off the trilogy for me.

message 13: by George P. (last edited Nov 18, 2019 06:56PM) (new)

George P. | 697 comments I've only read ten of these, a little less than my usual 25% or so.
Five of these are in my next 100 to-read list, so rather a lot; they include Levi's The Drowned and the Saved. I've read Levi's "If Not Now, When?" and thought it very good. So I also want to read his Survival in Auschwitz (aka "If This is a Man").

Of Amanda's 6 preferred, I would choose A Hero of Our Time; Lost Language of Cranes and Under the Volcano aren't in my near plans- but I would probably read Lost Language if it was picked.
I'd also like to read The Call of the Wild, most of you have read it probably; I've read a couple of others of London's incl M Eden.
So there's my nominees/seconds:
A Hero of Our Time
The Drowned and the Saved
The Call of the Wild

Thanks! It's ok though, hopefully folks won't want to hang on to it. It is one that I've had on my mind to read sooner rather than later, so I can still follow the discussion + comment later. The biggest problem with the 1001 list is many of the books are just not available in our little library system (which has suffered some cuts to services thereby affecting my borrowing!).

I got it, you are listed. I think we have 2 amanda's but the other one did not vote. Would be nice if one of you would use some kind of identifier, like and initial or a number of something. I struggle to keep myself straight. Two Diane's, two Amandas and we did have two Jens.

Does anyone else have this problem?
