It depends on the non-fiction books. The rules state that:

Where is the cut off line for when a character's name can or cannot be used for a card?
We generally want them to have some dialogue and meaning to the story. Not just a hotel bellhop called Victor that opens a door, for example

What's the rules with non fiction Books? Can the real life people of history say be used as "characters" and the same with locations used as "settings"?
I'm going to say no for the majority of non fiction books, (it opens the doors to books that have a zillion royals listed for example), unless of course the non fiction book is something like "Eat Pray Love" which is told like a novel with limited characters. I hope that makes sense!!

They are on a different thread for FAQs. I’ll add that link to my comment with the rules, countdown, etc.

Use whichever number is under the title at the very top of the main book page, so for Moon Called, Blood Bound, Iron Kissed, etc, it just has Mercy Thompson.

Gem ~ZeroShelfControl~ (zeroshelfcontrol) | 574 comments Had a manic weekend with the superbowl and I had annual leave from work so I will get started on my books tonight. Great start though ladies!

Thanks Vicki. I have no idea what's going on with ŷ, but just this morning I couldn't reach our thread on my phone. So upsetting.

I keep having issues with GR too, but I'm a slow learner because I should copy/paste every post I make and save it!

Question 1: I think I read that if a book is non-fiction that we cannot use character's names due to the possibility of so many person's names in that genre of books. So I didn't put any character's names on my one book for that reason. But I wanted to double check if the "character" is who the story is about, is it possible to use their names? Always can hope.

Question 2: Just curious, why are we not using the SS? It seems like a LOT of work for all of us to put our books and all that information that someone else (you and the co-captain) will have to transfer.

Diana Costa | 1027 comments Vicki wrote: "Diana wrote: "Vicki wrote: "I posted my shelf several days ago but I don't see it. Here it is again: /review/list......"

Answer 1: I would have said yes, however, since a book always fits another card we shouldn't risk it.

Answer 2: Usually only captains and co-captains have access to the spreadsheet. Also, for someone who's playing for the first time, it would be confusing telling them to fit the book they read in a spot. By using a tracking spreadsheet I can fill the spots as best as my judgment goes in terms of what's easier/harder to get, and in case there is a mismatch at the end of the month -- imagine we have a 6 card and the last book read does not fit a 6 -- I can see from the tracking spreadsheet where can I swap books.

message 111: by Diana (new)

Diana Costa | 1027 comments Just a quick clarification: the location must be the main setting of the book. When there isn’t one, we just don’t use it.

Also, Gem, according to GR you started reading World War Z on the 30th of January. If that is the case, we cannot use the book for UNO because as per the the rules, books started before the beginning of the challenge do not count. If you indeed waited for the beginning of UNO, could you please correct the start date? Thanks!

Gem ~ZeroShelfControl~ (zeroshelfcontrol) | 574 comments Sorry I tend to add to currently reading as soon as I know what I'm reading next. I've changed it now as I started the audiobook at work on Monday.
I've deleted all the places it covered as there wasn't a main one. Sorry I'll be better at the rules going forward

message 113: by Diana (new)

Diana Costa | 1027 comments I remembered your comment saying you were going to start reading your books, so I assumed that you added it without actually start reading it :) also, no worries, now you know :)

Jen (wwygadatlt) | 53 comments Did my read Ignite Me not count for Green 2? I was going to read the Binding but i didnt realize 50% of the cover had to be that color to qualify. I thought that book was green enough and its thw 2nd in the series...

All coloured cards must be filled with a book whose cover is more than 50% that color. The cover of Ignite Me that on your shelf is not :( The same goes for The Binding. I am sorry I didn’t write this before, it has been a crazy week.

However, Vicki read Ignite Me, so it works as a Reverse too, I’ll add that info to the spreadsheet in case we need it. :)

At the moment we need a 3 Red and a 2 Green! Any volunteers for those?

Noel Diem (noeldiem) | 228 comments I’ve got a red!

message 117: by Jen (new)

Jen (wwygadatlt) | 53 comments Id say its about 50% green....

The cover is more green than anything else?

message 118: by Diana (last edited Feb 08, 2020 08:16AM) (new)

Diana Costa | 1027 comments Hmmmm, I don't see it but I may be wrong! Noel, what do you think? Should we take it to the captains group?

Ignite Me (Shatter Me, #3) by Tahereh Mafi

I see blue :( are my eyes not working? :)

Noel Diem (noeldiem) | 228 comments I checked it against Tin Eye (which was linked in previous years as the best way to check colors) and it actually said it was grey...

message 121: by Noel (new)

Noel Diem (noeldiem) | 228 comments Truthfully I could see an argument for green or blue. Let’s take it to the captain’s group.

I think it's best! Will you do it please?

message 123: by Diana (new)

Diana Costa | 1027 comments Oh, puddings, the first week of UNO has ended, and I think it's time for a quick overview on how we're doing. We have 82 regular cards + 7 coloured cards + 9 Draw 2s for this month, resulting in 80 books to read. Of those, 21 + 2 + 3 spots have been filled already, meaning that in one week we read 20 books! We are on a good track :)

Any good books read this week? :)

message 124: by Noel (new)

Noel Diem (noeldiem) | 228 comments I’m away from my computer until this evening but I will do it then!

message 125: by Jen (new)

Jen (wwygadatlt) | 53 comments Ill just keep reading and let you guys apply a color if applicable.

When do hands for march get filled?

message 126: by Tina (new)

Tina | 768 comments Great job everyone!

I read Girl 99 this week and it was much better than I thought, so that was a nice surprise:) Now I'm reading A window breaks and it's a page turner!

message 131: by Noel (last edited Feb 08, 2020 05:03PM) (new)

Noel Diem (noeldiem) | 228 comments So - I added "Yes, Please" by Amy Poehler to the scorecard. I think we should limit it to the author (Skip) or Reverse (Read by Tina) based on the non-fiction rules, but I did put in a few main characters that were mentioned (namely Tina Fey and Seth Meyers).

I also posted Ignite Me in the captain's group!

message 132: by Diana (new)

Diana Costa | 1027 comments The decision in the captain's group is that we should not use Ignite Me as a green cover.

In the meanwhile Cyndee has already read a Red 3 Noel! Don't worry about it :)

Tawni (tawnimarie) | 122 comments Hey team!! Sorry, I just started a new job so have been trying to fit in as much reading time as possible I should have chosen shorter books for the next few months! Lesson learned: I'll read shorter ones after I finish this John Irving book. :) Seems like everyone is doing so great on the challenge and I'm over here reading as slow as a snail ahh!!

Jen (wwygadatlt) | 53 comments From the FAQs
"What about if it's a von, van, etc?
I use my library to work out the alphabetisation for any two word surnames. Most surnames that are van with a small v are not alphabetised as v."

Does this mean the last name LaFont would count as a F?

No, it means that in some libraries surnames beginning with van are alphabetized ignoring that prefix. Actually, alphabetizing prefixed surnames varies depending on the country. However, by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, in the UK and in the USA prefixes should be counted, so we should just stick with the Vs and the Ls in the cases you mentioned.

Gem ~ZeroShelfControl~ (zeroshelfcontrol) | 574 comments I’ve finished flat out love for yellow 4. Will add to the tracking spreadsheet tomorrow evening!! (I really loved the book too)

message 141: by Noel (new)

Noel Diem (noeldiem) | 228 comments Ohh Gem, I really want to read that one! Maybe I will in another month and get a reverse out of it!

How's everyone else's reading going? I just finished a book I didn't love (Hippie by Paulo Coehlo) that barely counted for any cards. Now I'm (FINALLY) starting A Man Called Ove.

message 142: by Tina (new)

Tina | 768 comments Ah Noel, then you're in for a treat:)
And you should definitely try to find room in your reading schedule for Flat-Out Love!

I finished A window breaks this morning and it was really good! Now I'm reading Head over high heels and the hero, Flint, is such a great guy;)

I really dislike Paulo Coelho's books. Yesterday I saw someone buying one of his books and I wanted to scream "Doooooooon't". I don't know why I have such a big grudge against them, but honestly I never felt anything of the sorts towards other books...

Moving on to happier things, I LOVED "A man called Ove" :D I hope you enjoy it!

I am reading now "Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda" for Red 8 but I am finding it just ok. Good thing it's an easy and quick read.

I am looking at my shelf now and I see so many things I want to read (Yes, Anna Karenina, I'll read you this year; yes, The First Man in Rome, I'll read you too, eventually) and so little time. :(

I loved A Man Called Ove also! Actually, I've loved everything I've read by Fredrik Backman. Beartown was my favorite. :)

Diana Costa | 1027 comments Hey Puddings!

The mini challenge for February has been posted! Here it is>
February Mini

Bear in mind that books count if they were started after Feb 1st and completed after this .

There are 40 tasks in the mini, which I think is totally doable. I added new columns in the Tracking SS so that we can keep track of our options. If possible, list 3 options for each book you read.

Let me know if you have questions!

And a happy Valentine's day! :)

message 148: by Jen (new)

Jen (wwygadatlt) | 53 comments so if I just finished a book I cant use that because it's already done prior to this count down? sorry, I'm totally confused

message 149: by Jen (new)
