Diana Costa | 1027 comments Hello my dearest puddings! :)
I am just about to add you all as friends here on GR.
I hope you're excited for UNO! I'll try my hardest to make sure you're all having a great time with this challenge :)

Maybe we should introduce ourselves a bit? Share whatever you feel like! I am Diana, this is my fourth UNO and every year I tell my boyfriend that I really shouldn't play because I am always so, so busy -.- but then I just can't resist :D
I am Portuguese but currently live in London, love dogs, love cooking, love reading (did I really need to say it?) and will read pretty much anything. I am trying to keep an open mind about all kinds of books. :)

If you have any questions, post them here. I'm sure that either I, Leah or Noel (hi co-captains!) will come back to you with answers as soon as we can.

I reserved a couple other spots in our thread so that I can share with you a tracking spreadsheet for our team, and a couple other things.

I hope to hear from you all very soon!

Pretty much all you need to know about UNO

UNO FAQs

This is a tracking spreadsheet for our team, I would like to ask you all to, whenever you finish a book (or within a day or two), fill in a row with all details you can remember about that book and that we can use to fit our UNO cards. I have an example row in the SS, let me know if you have any further questions about it. I'll be the one shuffling the books and fitting them in our hands for the month.

If you are not comfortable using a spreadsheet, make a post in this thread with the title of the book you read, the date, and tell which cards does the book fit and why. I'll update the spreadsheet for you.

Coloured covers:
yellow
blue
red
green

Hi Team!! I'm Cyndee. :) I'm in the US (Ohio). Mom to 3 kids (one away in college, one senior in HS, and a 4th grader), a big dog, and soon to add a bearded dragon to the mix. Reading is my only real hobby and is the source of a lot of joking in our house.

I'm so excited to start this game! I haven't ever played UNO here before, but I've done a ton of other team challenges throughout ŷ.

I spent some time this afternoon making a spreadsheet of ALL of the books currently on my TBR and where they'll fit for colors/numbers for this challenge so I'm ready to go! Yep, a bit of a nerd here.

I have books that will fit ANY/ALL of the color cards for February so just let me know which ones you want me to cover. :) My first choice from the list, though, would fit for Green 0 or Green 4.

message 14: by Tina (last edited Jan 23, 2020 05:09AM) (new)

Tina | 768 comments A big hello to all my fellow puddings!:) I really liked that defintion of us during the next three months, thank you Diana!

I'm in Sweden, I'm a civil engineer and I love to read, travel and being outdoor. I've played UNO every year since 2015 and it's my favorite challenge of all times:) I've met so many wonderful people, found new interesting books to read through them and I've increased the number of books I read per year, all thanks to this challenge. Needless to say, it will always have a special place in my heart:) So, even if I won't be able to read as many books this year as I used to, I'll still do my part of the challenge.

I haven't checked my books yet how they'll fit the color cards, but I'll get back to you on that. I have been saving some yellow books though so I'll check them first.

I have a feeling this will be a great team and I hope we will have a lot of fun during the challenge:)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 510 comments **Note: I posted this on the wrong thread via my phone 2 days ago, so I updated it a little. I have no idea how I got on the wrong UNO thread. LOL

Hey, Diana & teammates! I am pretty sure this is my second year playing UNO & I loved it so I’m back!

I am a retired high school teacher and I taught English for 25 years mostly to freshmen and I taught yearbook for about 18 or 19 years. Since retiring in May 2017 I have done some extensive traveling in the states and Mexico.

I obviously love reading and my favorite genres are mystery/thriller/suspense, historical fiction, romance, and emotional reads! Lol Reading challenges have taken over my life!

I have 20 grandchildren and am expecting my 21st in March. My 5th great grandchild (a girl) was just born Tuesday, January 21. 💕💕💕

I look forward to getting to know all of you!

Diana, thanks for the countdown clock! :)

message 16: by Tina (new)

Tina | 768 comments Congratulations Vicki! They say that grandchildrens are the dessert of life, I wonder what great grandchildren can be compared to:)

message 17: by Vicki (last edited Jan 23, 2020 07:55AM) (new)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 510 comments Sadly, I don't see my great grandchildren more than once or twice yearly. Two live in Arizona, one is in Oregon, and two are in southern California (I live in the Central Valley, California, so about 325 miles away). I see my grandchildren a lot more, many times a year for the most part. Maybe greats would be desserts with a cherry on top. :)

message 18: by Noel (new)

Noel Diem (noeldiem) | 228 comments Hello Everyone! I’m Noel - a co-captain and an avid reader! I’ve participated in UNO for a few years now and it tends to bring out my competitive spirit. I’m 29 years old, a love of classic lit and modern fiction, and I live in Pennsylvania. (I’m currently messaging from BroadwayCon in New York City!)

In my daily life, I’m a marketing content writer and project manager. While reading is my first love, I’m also passionate about theater, make-up, politics, silly YouTube channels like Good Mythical Morning and Smosh, meditation, yoga, and dogs.

I’m really excited to be here with all of you! I haven’t had a chance to plan out my books just yet, but I will get to after this weekend.

message 19: by Tina (new)

Tina | 768 comments I've checked my books and I can help with:
7 Blue
4 Green
0 Green

Is this cover red enough? Corrupt (Devil's Night, #1) by Penelope Douglas )
In that case I can also help with 8 Red.

Let me know if I should plan to read any of these books. Otherwise I can check for Reverse or something:)

message 20: by Tina (new)

Tina | 768 comments Hi Noel:)

Vicki, distance can be tough:( I've always been lucky to have my family very close. And great grandchildren would definitely be the cherries:)

message 21: by Diana (new)

Diana Costa | 1027 comments Hey there!
Congratulations Vicki! And you are welcome. :)
Oh Cyndee, *spreadsheets*. Wait. *spreadsheets for books* aka the best kind of spreadsheets. :) I'll put you under the Green 0 for now then.
Enjoy Broadwaycon Noel! I visited NY once, it was incredible!
I love UNO too Tina, it's the only reading challenge in which I participate, but I got hooked from the first time and cannot say no to it now. :) Unfortunately the red cover is not red enough, but that 7 Blue is much appreciated!! I'll also have you on the Green 4 too for now.

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

Great Diana, thanks! I can pick up any of the other colored cards that are left over if we need it.

Noel, I am so jealous that you're at BroadwayCon. My daughter and I are huge theatre fans!

message 23: by Tina (new)

Tina | 768 comments Ok, I'll prepare for 7 Blue and 4 Green:)

Now I'm curious, what's BroadwayCon? I've also visited New York, it's a great city! We saw The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway, it's my all time favorite:)

message 24: by Noel (new)

Noel Diem (noeldiem) | 228 comments Tina - it is essentially ComicCon but for Broadway! It has panels on different shows, performances from Broadway stars, a marketplace, special guests, and a lot of fun!

message 25: by Tina (new)

Tina | 768 comments Noel - it sounds awesome! Is it the whole weekend?

Gem ~ZeroShelfControl~ (zeroshelfcontrol) | 574 comments Hi Teamies/puddings/encouragers of my reading habbit!!

Im Gem, 32 and live in the UK and I have never played this challenge before.
I work a standard 9-5 office job, I'm into nearly all sports (watching NOT playing) and my love of reading just seems to be getting bigger and bigger.
I've banned myself (but not really sticking to) buying anymore books until I've got my TBR pile down so that all my books fit on my bookcase. I'm about 30 over!!!
It takes me a week or so to get to grips with what I'm doing with new challenges but having looked at the spreadsheet it looks pretty self explanatory.
**Question 1 - do I add some books to my UNO shelf im thinking of using or is that just for books I've completed for this challenge?
Question 2 - in other challenges the cover is whats physically in your hand and not the GR default, is that the same here?**

Cant wait to get started with this one with you all.

message 27: by Tina (new)

Tina | 768 comments Hi Gem!
Thats's strong of you to at least try to not buy any books:) I'm trying that myself this year but it's so hard when there are so many interesting books released all the times and always by one of your favorite authors! And to have a TBR pile with about 30 over... I wish that was the case for me!

The UNO challenge is pretty simple, so I'm sure you'll get the hang of it in no time:)
1. I guess that's up to the captains how they want us to do it, it's been different from year to year. I prefer to put it on my UNO shelf as soon as I know I'll read it, it helps me keep track of what I'm supposed to read.
2. Yes, it's the cover that's physically in your hand.

Gem ~ZeroShelfControl~ (zeroshelfcontrol) | 574 comments Thanks for answering the questions for me :)
I can take 4 yellow as my starting book and it’s one that’s been on my TBR for agessssssss!!

message 29: by Diana (new)

Diana Costa | 1027 comments Hello Gem!
It requires a lot of strength not to buy more books; ever since I moved to the UK I started spending money in books like crazy because in comparison with Portugal they are soooo cheaper here and I just can't resist :D
I'll have you on the 4 Yellow :)

message 30: by Diana (last edited Jan 24, 2020 02:13PM) (new)

Diana Costa | 1027 comments Oh, and about having books on the UNO shelf. Add the books whenever you want -- either when you decide to read it or finish reading it -- I'll sort them by "read by date", so it won't make a difference.

By the way, Gem, Tina and Cyndee, can you confirm that your shelves are correct in the comment above?

Noel and Vicki, I couldn't find your UNO shelves, have you set them up already?

Gem ~ZeroShelfControl~ (zeroshelfcontrol) | 574 comments Yep that’s my shelf. I’ve just added my book I want to read, would you mind taking a quick look to check it’s yellow enough? I’m not sure on the strictness exactly yet. Many thanks :)

message 32: by Tina (new)

Tina | 768 comments That's great Gem! It always feels good to find a reason to read something you've put off for a long time.

Gem ~ZeroShelfControl~ (zeroshelfcontrol) | 574 comments Added in 2013, I love these challenges to help you pick up books you’ve otherwise abandoned. Thanks again for your help ladies!!

message 34: by Tina (new)

Tina | 768 comments Diana, I can't press the link that says Tina:( Strange, but just to be sure, this is my shelf: Tina

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

Yep, that's the correct shelf for me. :)

Gem, I hope you enjoy that book. I loved it.

message 36: by Tina (new)

Tina | 768 comments So did I Gem:)

message 37: by Tawni (new)

Tawni (tawnimarie) | 122 comments Hey everyone! 👋🏻(Here's my shelf: /review/list...)

I'm Tawni, a marketing content writer (heyyyy Noel 💪🏻) in Vienna, Austria. I'm originally from the PNW in the States but we've been in Vienna for almost eight years, and it is really home to us.

We've got two human boy children and two girl cat children, so things are pretty evened out, here. 😅Oh, and ~30 indoor plants. 😍

As for hobbies, reading pretty much sums them up. I'm hosting a podcast about books and the enneagram I try to guess fictional characters' personality types and then talk about it but have been really busy, so haven't done a new episode in a long time. But it's something I want to get back into, so I guess that would be a hobby I aspire to have.

This is my second year playing Uno, and I *almost* didn't sign up because I've been so busy lately, but I couldn't resist. I'm always reading, and I track what I read anyway, so why not make a game out of it? 😉

I'm happy to be a pudding for the next few months!

message 38: by Tina (new)

Tina | 768 comments Hi Tawni! Lucky for us you decided to join UNO this year:) I agree, why not make a game out of it! Plus, it's so much fun to do it in a group:)

You can use it to the 4 Yellow card. I wasn't sure if the shade of yellow was ok but I took it to the captain's group and it is, we can use it :)

message 40: by Diana (new)

Diana Costa | 1027 comments Hi Tawni! You'll have lots of fun with the challenge, I'm sure. :)
I took on gardening as a hobby recently, mostly herbs, succulents and I have a big indoor plant that I absolutely adore. Hopefully I'll be able to keep everything alive :)

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 510 comments Welcome to the best puddings ever, Jen!

message 43: by Jen (new)

Jen (wwygadatlt) | 53 comments Thanks guys.

I'm Jen. I live in north of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. This is my first year and am so happy that I got added to your team! This is my first group challenge EVER so I'm super excited to give this game a try.

message 44: by Jen (new)

Jen (wwygadatlt) | 53 comments So am I just reading books and adding it to the February log where one of the captains will strategically add it to wherever it fits best?

I have a pretty big TBR and am currently on book 19 for the year. I just want to be able to help out as much as possible.

I just realized the book I'm currently reading would cover red 3... idk if I can hold off on finishing it for 5 days though haha

message 45: by Jen (new)

Jen (wwygadatlt) | 53 comments I have 2 green

The Binding by Bridget Collins

message 46: by Jen (new)

Jen (wwygadatlt) | 53 comments So for numbers when it says "set in a place...." the book I'm reading takes place in Tulsa, Oklahoma at a school called the house of night... could that count as 3 for H because of the school name?

message 47: by Diana (new)

Diana Costa | 1027 comments Hi Jen! Welcome to our pudding mix! :)

That's the idea! You log the books, I add them in the final spreadsheet. But only books started after the beginning of the challenge count! (See countdown in the third comment) but if you start a book in February and finish it in March it will count towards our hands in March! Basically, all books you start reading after the beginning of the challenge count for the challenge.

I'll add you to the Green 2 spot!

So we cannot use the book that you are currently reading, but if you had started it in February then we could have used it for the H.

message 48: by Jen (new)

Jen (wwygadatlt) | 53 comments Okay theres another book in the series that will meet the red 3 as well then so you can put new down for both.

message 49: by Tina (new)

Tina | 768 comments I'm trying really hard not to start reading any books until February! But I guess that means I'll have a lot of pent up energy once the challenge starts;)
Instead of reading, I plan what to read:)

message 50: by Jen (new)

Jen (wwygadatlt) | 53 comments Just read ones that dont apply to the game.
