What better way to kick off the new year than giving a nod to our awesome group?! This week, you are looking for books that do not have A, T, or Y in the author's name. If you want to make this prompt a bit easier, you can limit it to just the author's last name not having A, T, or Y, and if you're looking to amp up the challenge, try keeping A, T, and Y from the title as well!

-----------------------------------
Suggestions:

You can search your TBR for this one, but here are a few suggestion from our listopia:

Brené Brown
Pierce Brown
Mike Chen
Philip K. Dick
Louise Erdrich
John Green
Joe Hill
Keri Hulme
N.K. Jemisin
Sue Monk Kidd
Min Jin Lee
C.S. Lewis
Imbolo Mbue
George Orwell
Rivers Solomon
H.G. Wells

ATY Group Listopia

-----------------------------------
Optional Questions:
1. What are you reading for this category?
2. Was it difficult to find an author to read for this prompt?
3. What book would you recommend to others to read for this category?

message 2: by Thomas (new)

Thomas I am going to use this to finally read Quidditch Through the Ages

message 3: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (fancynancyt) | 1823 comments I totally had Jeffrey Eugenides slotted for this and then realized I'm dumb. So now I don't know what I'm going to read. Possibilities from my TBR are Things in Jars by Jess Kidd or Long Bright River by Liz Moore or Future Home of the Living God by Louise Erdich.

I've read most of John Green's books but could do Looking for Alaska or Paper Towns

Emily Bourque (emilyardoin) | 10910 comments Mod
Nancy, if you haven't read Looking for Alaska, I highly recommend! Paper Towns wasn't my favorite, but I loved Looking for Alaska.

I currently have these on my plan:

Rising Strong by Brene Brown
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon
The Bone People by Keri Hulme
The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd

message 7: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (patchworkbunny) | 2955 comments I'm sure I voted for this but now I am struggling to find authors to fit, these are such common letters in names. From my wishlist I could read The Book of M, The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water, The Empress of Salt and Fortune, Zeus is a Dick or If We Were Villains. I only found Wanderers on my owned TBR but it's pretty long so not sure I want to get behind so early on!

message 8: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy | 1130 comments I think I’ll go with Snape: A Definitive Reading by Lorrie Kim, or maybe If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio. I have a weird number of TBR possibilities though!

message 9: by Heather (new)

Heather (eveejoystar) | 64 comments I'm going to read Why I'm No Longer Talking to White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge

message 10: by Viktoria (new)

Viktoria Valkova | 102 comments I'm going to read Catch-22

I would recommend My Man Jeeves by P.G. Wodehouse and the Harry Potter series

message 11: by Sam (new)

Sam | 316 comments I think I'm doing Future Home of the Living God by Louise Erdrich for this one, feels very timely/relevant and this is one I had leftover from my 2017 plan so I feel very motivated this time around.

In addition to the listopia suggestions pulled out above, I'd recommend these authors/books:
Don DeLillo, especially Libra
M.L. Rio's If We Were Villains
Ron Chernow if you want history/biography, loved Alexander Hamilton and intend to revisit Grant

message 14: by Robin P, Orbicular Mod (new)

Robin P | 3788 comments Mod
If Spencer Quinn has a new entry in the Chet and Bernie series, I'll read that. Otherwise, maybe Leif Enger. And I do have a doorstopper biography of Washington by Ron Chernow.

message 15: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 563 comments I've got a few options on my TBR list:
Dead Lions by Mick Herron
Winter Men by Jesper Bugge Kold
Never Never by Colleen Hoover
Verity by Colleen Hoover
Too Late by Colleen Hoover
Fairlyden by Gwen Kirkwood
The Secret Heiress by Luke Devenish
Doomsday Book by Connie Willis
Anything by Robin Cook
LaRose by Louise Erdrich
The Cake Maker’s Wish by Josephine Moon
Morgan's Run by Colleen McCullough

The top book I own a paperback copy of, the next six I own on Kindle, so hopefully I read one of those before I start considering the others I don't own!!

message 16: by Angie (new)

Angie | 19 comments For this category, I'm probably going to do The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells. My back up choice might be something from the Harry Potter series. BUT I've been circling Invisible Man for years. I should get on with it, lol.

The Chapter Conundrum (Stacey) | 43 comments I'll probably be continuing with either the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown or The Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb for this one! :)

message 20: by SadieReadsAgain (new)

SadieReadsAgain (sadiestartsagain) | 452 comments 1. What are you reading for this category?
Little Gods by Meng Jin

2. Was it difficult to find an author to read for this prompt?
Yes!! It felt like every book I picked up had an author with all three letters in their name! But thankfully I had this pick in my NetGalley TBR. I wont be able to fit it in before the end of the year, so this is perfect.

3. What book would you recommend to others to read for this category?
I've got pretty much nothing, except Brené Brown, but I'd slotter her in somewhere else!

Barbara Pereira (babitix) | 970 comments 1. What are you reading for this category?
Pachinko by Min Jin Lee

2. Was it difficult to find an author to read for this prompt?
Not at all! Got her name out of the list provided in the first post.

3. What book would you recommend to others to read for this category?
I love Sue Monk Kidd and would definetely suggest anyone to read either The Secret Life of Bees or The Invention of Wings.

message 24: by Jordan (new)

Jordan (likearollingstone) I'm going to read A Scanner Darkly by Phillip K Dick. It's been on my to-read pile for ages, so wasn't difficult to find!

message 25: by Deborah (new)

Deborah | 348 comments I will be reading Russell M. Nelson: Father, Surgeon, Apostle by Spencer J. Condie for this prompt.

I have to admit that at first I was convinced that there aren't any authors that don't have A, T, or Y in their names. Obviously I was wrong. After scrolling through my TBR list I did find a few. The author's that stuck out in my list were:

Sheri Dew
Spencer J. Condie
Jules Verne
Debbie Viguié
C.S. Lewis
Chris Heimerdinger

message 26: by Susan (new)

Susan | 28 comments 1. Blind River by Ben Follows
2. Not really, it was on my list last year and I didn't get to it.

Maria (malianikeki) | 92 comments For this topic I’m reading Nio Liv by Emelie Schepp

message 29: by Dubhease (new)

Dubhease | 1007 comments I'm reading Animal Farm.

The listopia really helped because I had problems thinking of an author. It worked out because this has been on my TBR list for a while.

message 30: by Bec (new)

Bec | 1334 comments 1. What are you reading for this category?
I'm reading (well listening to) Layla by Colleen Hoover

2. Was it difficult to find an author to read for this prompt?
Nope. I was going to listen to this book as it's on Kindle unlimited and it just happened to fit. So win win!

message 31: by NancyJ (last edited Jan 03, 2021 11:43PM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3207 comments I would like to read these (where ever they fit):

Or maybe something by Louise Erdrich or Liz Moore

The Heart's Invisible Furies
A Ladder to the Sky

message 32: by Mary Beth (new)

Mary Beth (marybethw) | 31 comments I chose Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream. I have not read it before. I read Beartown in 2020 and really loved it. A lot of people recommended Friday Night Lights after I read it.
Friday Night Lights by HG Bissinger

message 33: by Jennie (new)

Jennie Brueck | 9 comments 1. What are you reading for this category? The Night Watchman

2. Was it difficult to find an author to read for this prompt?
I was certainly surprised by how many authors had an A, T, or Y in their name. But it didn't take me too long to find one that did not.

3. What book would you recommend to others to read for this category? Anything with a foreign author, especially chinese or japanese.

Sherri Harris | 1461 comments Savage Run (Joe Pickett,#2) by C.J.Box for this prompt

message 35: by Marie (new)

Marie | 1047 comments I read IQ by Joe Ide.

It was quite difficult to find an author, I don't have that many on my TBR, and even fewer on my Read & Would Recommend list. I'd definitely recommend IQ, also anything by John Green, and I was surprised how much I enjoyed Lee Child's Killing Floor.

I agree that John Boyne is a great writer, but don't read him for this prompt - there is a 'y' in his name!

message 41: by Regitze Xenia (new)

Regitze Xenia (regitzexenia) | 5 comments I’m reading These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong for this one.

message 42: by Calvin (new)

Calvin (calvinium) Attempted to read Macbeth by Jo Nesbø for this, but H A T E D it so much I had to bin it after 50 pages. So now I'm on to Rupture by Simon Lelic

message 44: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Sterling | 452 comments For this prompt, I read The Walk by Lee Goldberg. I had a whole list of books picked out that fit this prompt, but I was looking for something different that I haven't read in a while, and this earthquake disaster story fit the bill. I just scrolled through my Kindle until I came across this one, and it was a good, short story (206 pages) that kept my interest and helped me knock my second book off the list. On to number three!

message 45: by Kristi (new)

Kristi Mills | 7 comments I read The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd. The Secret Life of Bees is one of my favorite books so I thought I try another one of hers. I didn’t love it but it was a nice way to spend the afternoon. Her writing does really transport you to the location in the book. I felt like I could smell and see the small barrier island in the book. Nice break from all the cold and snow around me now!

message 46: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (ronireads13) | 816 comments I am going to read Girls in White Dresses by Jennifer Close. It wasn't hard finding several options on my TBR for this prompt.

Raquel (Silver Valkyrie Reads) I read My Life as an Ice Cream Sandwich by Ibi Zoboi for this prompt.

I had a few options on my owned TBR, and then just happened to realize this audiobook from the library fit, so I didn't have trouble with this prompt at all!

Authors I recommend for this prompt:
C.S. Lewis
John Green
N.D. Wilson
Pierce Brown
Box Brown

message 48: by Jen (new)

Jen (jenstratton) I read The Psychopath Test: A Journey Through the Madness Industry by Jon Ronson

This wasn't difficult to choose/find because I have been wanting to read this since I read So You've Been Publicly Shamed two years ago (highly recommend)!

Bin it sounds so much better then DNF'd.

message 50: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 1729 comments I had quite a few to choose from, so went with the first one available at the library. I am glad I did. It was a 5 Star read.

This One Looks Like a Boy: My Gender Journey to Life as a Man by Lorimer Shenher.

My second choice was The Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson. I have not found a spot on the list for this one yet. It may just ending up being a side read.
