The Absolute Book - or under #8 for its talking raven"

I started The Absolute Book a few weeks ago and it was excellent! I couldn't finish because of an assignment I needed to read for, but I'm hoping to get back to it in January.

ŷ let me create a few threads, then crashed on me again. This is going slowly. Nashville (where I'm from) had a bombing on Christmas, and at&t has been down. I don't use at&t, but I wonder if it's still affecting my ability to create threads? It's fine when I post here though. Well, I'll try again later. It's not yet 2021, though I wouldn't mind if it were! :)

Thanks for sharing! I will read anything by Aliya Whiteley.

P.S. In case there are US members who don't know about it, Book Depository is a good resource for buying books out in other countries before the US. Plus, they ship for free with a cute little bookmark included.

Usually, I get very cross at the comparisons listed, but in this case it is pretty spot on - especially Ursula Le Guin.

Congrats on getting through your Q1 of ARCs. I've still got quite a stack to get through - but a really good list!

UKL is one of my favorite authors so that's exciting.

Well, I have to move on to Q2 arcs for work, but I did not finish Q1 arcs. I received 82 Q1 arcs, and I read all or part of 42. Ugh. I'm not sure how to do better, but I need to. I currently have 52 arcs for Q2, and I've read all or part of 5. I have until the end of March. We'll see how it goes!

How's everyone's challenge going?

I have at least one book for each category, but I may aim for 3 books per category.

3 books per category would be amazing!

I'm just waiting on particular books I'm desperate to read which haven't been released in the UK yet.

Some books on my list are by authors I've wanted to read for a long time - the challenge is a good prompt for me to get around to them.

Best collection ever.

Asaria wrote: "More or less it's completed but I'd love to grab one or two books for 4. Shapeshifter, 5. Monsters as heroes or 9. Trickster. And find a way to somehow fit in Ariadne"

I think Ariadne could fit under "Shadow" because of the rites at the end (I'm not sure how far you've gotten) and also because it sorta explores the shadow behind the myth, Theseus as good and heroic in the stories vs. the truth.

For me to reach 3 in every category, I need:

2 more in these categories:
Journey to another world
Keys, passes, opening new doors
Trickster
People turning into animals

1 more in these categories:
Monsters as heroes
Shadow: Represents the energy of the dark side, the unexpressed
Talking animal/object
Free spot: Forest Lore

It might be possible? We'll see. I should definitely be able to get 2 per category, especially considering I still need to read our 3 group reads this month, which will fit one or more of these categories.

It's definitely the latter half. Also, you're approaching the part that I found the most tedious. I enjoyed the beginning and end, but it did drag in the middle. Just so you know. You may like the middle though!

Let's see how it will go :). I'm disappointed by what I have read so far, though. To give credit when it's due, the author did her research. I appreciate these tiny nods here and there!

I enjoyed it overall but I didn't think it was perfect. I'm glad I read it!

I have at least one book for each category, but I may aim for 3 books per category."

I have 7 books so far. I might also read several books for some of the categories. I ended up reading all Eden Robinson trilogy again and they count for so many categories. I haven't even decided which ones I'll use them for.

I am still looking for something for the Shadow Self. I'm wondering if any of Herman Hesse books would count. I have not read any of his books since I was a teen!

I've read Siddhartha and a collection of his short stories and I'm pretty sure both would count for that category.

I love this list because I haven't read a single one of these!

I'd definitely recommend Daughter of Sparta and anything by Elise Kova (two on the list are by her), though I'd suggest starting off with Air Awakens first! :)

Annette | 271 comments I have just finished reading The Frog Princess for my last 2021 challenge requirement: people turning into animals. It was cute.

I have also been listing extra books in my last free choice slot.

How's everyone's challenge going? Struggling with a spot? Read something really good?

Asaria | 810 comments Margaret wrote: "How's everyone's challenge going? Struggling with a spot? Read something really good?"

I'm struggling with reading block again. It isn't as bad as two months ago when nothing but romance novels could hold my attention. Currently juggling between genres and formats and trying to read a bit more about Roma people in Europe. I even tried manhwa (Korean comics :)), by the way.

As for the challenge, I finished it, though if something fits, I don't hesitate to include it on the list.

Ugh, boo to reading block!

I read graphic novels in between every print or digital book I read. I have a whole reading system of choosing what's next on my TBR.

Ozsaur, let us know if you need recs! I know the group will have lots. I at first struggled with that category but then I read a couple of werewolf novels last month.

I've also finished. For me, this has been the easiest challenge to complete. I'm adding all the books I read that match a category and I'm up to 57 books. It looks like Asaria has a similar number!

Susan Chapek | 306 comments Two more slots--although one's the free slot, and I'm partway through two different books that would qualify--depending on which I can re-borrow first from Libby.
The other slot is "monsters" and I'm reading European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman, with its spectacular mashup of multiple retellings. I admire it so much, but it's slow-going for me.

Margaret wrote: "How's everyone's challenge going? Struggling with a spot? Read something really good?"

I finished a few weeks ago quite by accident. Many of the books I read were not originally intended for the challenge and I only realized after I finished them that they could count.

Ozsaur wrote: "One left, people turning into animals."
Someplace to Be Flying, Under My Skin, all three books in the Son of a Trickster series, Empire of the Wild all the books in Patricia Briggs's Mercy Thompson series as it's about werewolves. Unfortunately the first Moon Called is the worst book. they get so much better after that with fae, other types of shapeshifters etc

Every single one of the books I read just happened to fit with the challenge. Since I read so much fantasy, and prefer retellings, they naturally fit within challenge categories.
