Our next capital challenge comes to us courtesy of Meg. She is taking us to the South American capital of Columbia.
Ten million people call sprawling and vibrant Bogota home. The energy of this metropolitan heart of Colombia is in part fueled by its abundance of dining hot spots, fantastic wines, and frequent food festivals. After indulging, walk off your feast with a stroll through the historic district, visit some of the many majestic churches or museums, or indulge in a shopping adventure.
Bogotá is officially Bogotá, Distrito Capital, abbreviated Bogotá, D.C.. It was formerly known as Santa Fe de Bogotá during the Spanish period and between 1991 and 2000. It is the capital of Colombia, and one of the largest cities in the world.
The city is located in the center of the country, on a high plateau known as the Bogotá savanna, part of the Altiplano Cundiboyacense located in the Eastern Cordillera of the Andes. Bogotá is the third-highest capital in South America and in the world after Quito and La Paz, at an average of 2,640 meters (8,660 ft) above sea level.
The city is home to central offices of the executive branch (Office of the President), the legislative branch (Congress of Colombia) and the judicial branch (Supreme Court of Justice, Constitutional Court, Council of State and the Superior Council of Judicature) of the Colombian government. It is the financial and commercial heart of country.
Bogotá has many cultural venues, including 58 museums, 62 art galleries, 33 library networks, 45 stage theaters, 75 sports and attraction parks, and over 150 national monuments. The city has been a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in the category of music since March 2012. In 2007, Bogotá was named World Book Capital by UNESCO.

1. Banco de la República Gold Museum
Also know as the Museo del Oro, the Gold Museum houses one of the most important collections of pre-Hispanic metallurgy in the world. As the name implies, there is a lot of fascinating gold, gathered from down through the ages. However, there’s also a plethora of other artifacts from indigenous Colombia cultures and peoples, making this

2. Mount Monseratte
Mount Monseratte provides incredible views of the city. The top can be reached via funicular and a cable car. For hardy nature lovers, however, there is a walking path that is somewhere over a mile. After absorbing the views, one can visit the Sanctuary of Monserrate. This traditional site of religious pilgrimage began in 1620 with the shrine of Our Lady of Monserrat. The basilica houses the image of the Fallen Lord of Monserrate, an effigy of Christ which, according to the faithful, performs miracles. Outside visitors can walk the Stations of the Cross.

3. Barrio La Candelaria
This historic district is where Bogota was founded in 1538. It gets its name from a Catholic chapel built in honor of the Virgen de la Candelaria. While there are some modern structures that house universities, libraries, and more, a large portion of the buildings - many of them in colonial and republican construction styles - are preserved and have been declared assets of historical and cultural interest. The larger houses are, among other things, theaters and museums.

4. Emerald Museum
The Museo Internacional de la Esmeralda, or Emerald Museum, is located on the 23rd floor of a modern building, right by the gold museum. Columbia supplies the majority of emeralds to the world market, and this is the place to learn about them. Included are replicas of the three most important mines, with real emerald veins running through their walls. Displays of stunning rough emerald specimens are displayed in towers in a room next door. There is a museum shop that sells emerald jewelry but for a real treat visit the shops of the Emerald District where you will find jewelry shops as well as dealers of loose emeralds.

Rounding out the assault on the senses is a flower market, best visited in the morning.

The collections of plants in the gardens are grouped by their original ecosystem. It is said to have around 5000 orchids, and features a wide variety of Amazon flowers.
