Mary Hangen | 376 comments Hello my UNO lovelies!

UNO can be tracked in one of two ways, which ever is easier for you is fine with us!

First: In the post above there is a link to where you can find the tracking spreadsheet. This is where you can enter all the information for the book being read or completed. We will pull from this spreadsheet to complete our team spreadsheet.

Second: You can post a completion post (sample below) and either myself, Tiffany, and Kylie will grab the information and put it into the spreadsheets.

It is entirely up to you to choose which method works best for you! :)

Completion Post Sample
Book cover
Book: Title + Author
Date Read:
Rating: (optional)
Add verified word count where applicable:

Cards the book works for:
- Number: Character (name + surname)
- Number: #... in series
- and so forth

Please add name and surname for characters every time, no matter which part works for the card.
Please add ALL possibilities for every book you complete in case we have to switch things around. (This will most likely not be necessary for colour cards.)

Mary Hangen | 376 comments Hello and Welcome to Team Casper Octupus

It is finally that time of the year again....UNO IS FINALLY HERE

For those of you who are new to this challenge, do not worry. It may look like it is a lot to take in at first sight, but you'll see that it is a very easy game. It merely involves some crazy colors and keeping an eye on character names while reading.

I am your captain this year. I have co-captained for two years and this is my second year as a full captain and I couldn't be more excited! I am from the panhandle of Florida, and live here with my husband, two kids, sister and her kid, 4 dogs, and 3 cats (it's kind of a zoo)! I work two jobs - one being at Barnes and Noble, so I am CONSTANTLY buying new books :D and I am a 10th English teacher the only part of my day. I spend a lot of my time playing with my kids, sweeping up pet hair, and reading! :)

First things first though!

Please read the RULES. Yes, I know, it involves reading. The horror!! ;-) If you're uncertain, it usually helps to go over them again. And then have a look at the spreadsheet to make it all more visual. And if you still have questions, I am all ears!

When you arrive in the thread, please post a link to your Uno shelf!

Most important of all: HAVE FUN!

Kylie Standley | 83 comments April Mini Challenge

Part One

Some animals have (seriously) unfortunate names. We therefore did not want to inflict them upon you as team names. They do deserve attention as well however and that's where the April mini challenge comes into play.

You will be reading books for tasks relating to some less than lucky beasties - you will also get some photos and details on them for your pleasure.

Every book read, i.e. every task completed, is worth 10 points.
Each book can be used for one task only.
Books for tasks can be finished in any order.
If your team completes all the tasks, you get 30 bonus points.

Part Two

All those extraordinary animals used for team names. If you haven't done any exploring of the lovely pictures posted for each team, now is your chance! You will be reading books for tasks relating to the beasties borrowed for fellow teams - have a browse through the teams, if you haven't already done so, to get a visual on these spectacular animals.

For each team name, you can read two books, choosing two of the following options:

Read a book with the entire name of the animal in title or text.
Read a book with a part of the animal's name in the title. (This obviously doesn't work for all team names.)
Read a book with a cover representing (any of) the animal's colour(s).
Get creative! Find a way to connect your book to the team name / animal in some way.

For example:
For Team Honduran White Bat, you could have the following options:
1. You find "Honduran White Bat" in either a book's title or somewhere in the text. The entire name, not just a part of it.
2. You read a book with "white" or with "bat" in the title. Not in the text.
3. You read a book with a white cover.
4. You read a book that is set in Honduras, for example, as it is a Honduran white bat, and not a Slovenian or Chinese white bat.

Another example:
For Team Boatbill, you could have the following options:
1. You find "Boatbill" in either a book's title or somewhere in the text.
2. You read a book with either "boat" or "bill" in the title, as both parts of the animal's name are an actual word.
3. You read a book with a blue cover or with a white cover, for example.
4. You find a fabulous other connection - i.e. you're being creative.

Every book read, i.e. every task completed, is worth 10 points.
Each book can be used for one task only.
Books for tasks can be finished in any order.
If your team completes all the tasks, you get 30 bonus points.

The rest of the usual fineprint

Books can be started at any point since the start of the UNO challenge (Feb 1).
Books need to be finished after the start of this mini challenge on April 12, 9am UTC ... and before May 1 at 9am UTC (when UNO sadly comes to an end).

Books used for this mini challenge do not need to be separate books from what you are claiming for your UNO hands.
The usual book length rules apply.
Team spreadsheets will be updated with a mini challenge tab so that you can track your books and claim your points.

Elisabeth from Australia here. A Contradiction and I were team mates last year but I don't think I've met anyone else. Looking forward to having fun!

Kylie Standley | 83 comments Hello Jackie and Elizabeth! Welcome :)

It's great to have you here. I can speak for the other captains when I say we can't wait to get this challenge started.

Our captain Mary is still working on the welcome post, but you are more than welcome to come on in and introduce yourselves! I will link a tracking sheet in one of the reserved spots for now so you can get started planning your reads for the first month.

Can't wait to hang out with you guys for the next couple of months!

message 23: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 947 comments Hi Kylie. Thanks for the link.
Ooh, there are a lot of blue covers. I have an Agatha Christie Hercule Poirot which could cover the 3 but definitely have a Yellow 9 on my TBR list for another challenge where I need a book with zany characters. A Promise of Ankles (44 Scotland Street #14) by Alexander McCall Smith Alexander Mc Call Smith's characters qualify there, I'd say.

message 24: by Kylie (new)

Kylie Standley | 83 comments Perfect! I can put you down for the Yellow 9 now. Let me know if you want me to also claim the Blue 3 for you.

Yes, we definitely have slightly too many blues for comfort. But hopefully, we will be able to find lots of options. I will post links to the four different colored shelves to see if they would be of any help/give us some inspiration :)

Kirsten | 268 comments Checking in.

I mostly read lit fic and mm romance. I’ve been stashing colored books but really have no idea how to play.

Jackie and I just finished one challenge together and are in the middle of another.

I’m excited to get started—this group is intense!

message 26: by Kylie (new)

Kylie Standley | 83 comments Hi Kirsten! Welcome :)

Once we get started, you'll realize it really is pretty straightforward! In the tracking sheet, there is a tab that describes what classifies a book to a specific card (if that makes sense). Take a look and see if any of your colored cards work for the hands we were drawn for February. If you find one that fits a book you have/want to read, I can go ahead and claim it for you. Getting the colored cards out of the way first is definitely a time saver later!

Happy to have you here :)

message 27: by Kylie (new)

Kylie Standley | 83 comments Also! It is up to you if you want to log your books yourself in the tracking spreadsheet or post them here and let the captains do it for you. Whatever you feel comfortable with and whatever makes it easier and more enjoyable for you

It's odd, isn't it? At first glance I thought great-- a blue then I looked more closely and thought - is it more purple, no it's blue. But is it? But if not blue what colour is it? It's blue, isn't it?

UNO does this to normally sane people.

That works for Blue 3! I will put you down for it. I do agree that the longer you look at a cover, the more you start to lose your mind over it haha. You begin to slowly overthink everything a little bit too much and then your brain becomes a jumble!

message 42: by Kylie (last edited Jan 21, 2023 08:40AM) (new)

Kylie Standley | 83 comments Jackie, those are great! I will put you down for both Blue 2 and Blue 6.

Woohoo, we finished off the colored cards! Now to fill in our small but hefty amount of Wild Draw Fours AND our multitude of reverses!

message 46: by Elisabeth (last edited Jan 21, 2023 01:15PM) (new)

Elisabeth Rose (elisabethrose) | 947 comments I had a quick look and found a few books on my TBR list that work as reverses.
Kylie has read: Lessons by Ian McEwan Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Jackie has read: Drop Shot (Myron Bolitar, #2) by Harlan Coben Endless Night by Agatha Christie I've added this one but I can read any of the others if we need one later.

Has anyone read My Brilliant Career by Miles Franklin or Fatherland by Robert Harris ? I'm doing a Calendar Challenge and need to read them in February.

message 47: by Kylie (new)

Kylie Standley | 83 comments Speaking of Lessons, I actually ended up DNFing that book so not sure if that would work for Reverse, but Daisy Jones I definitely have read!

I have not read any of the other books unfortunately

My husband found Lessons heavy going so I'm not in a hurry to read it. :)

Happy to see you all here! :) I will update our colored cards post shortly!

And a HUGE THANKS to Kylie for the tracking spreadsheet.
