JULY 2023 MINI CHALLENGES

RULES

** Books DO NOT all have to be mysteries. You can use any genres.

** A book can be used only once for this challenge, but can be used for other challenges (Seasonal, World Trip, Ultimate, etc.).

** You DO NOT have to choose books in advance, and can change your mind at any time if you do.

** Do as many as you are able and have fun!

1. July 3 is Disobedience Day: Read a book in which someone disobeys an order (how many amateur sleuths are told to "stay out of it" and investigate anyway?).

2. July 14 is National Tape Measure Day: Read a DIY/home improvement book or something related to construction.

3. July 15 is Gummi Worm Day and July 20 is National Lollipop Day: Read a book that features candy or sweets (chocolates and fudge count!).

message 46: by Trish (last edited Jul 26, 2023 05:30AM) (new)

Trish (trishhartuk) | 414 comments I hadn't chimed in this month, because I didn't think I'd get all the tasks done, but I've ended up managing it.

1. July 3 is Disobedience Day: Read a book in which someone disobeys an order (how many amateur sleuths are told to "stay out of it" and investigate anyway?).

The Return of the King, J.R.R. Tolkien 06/07/23
Both Merry and Éowyn are ordered to stay at Dunharrow by King Théoden, but disobey and go to Minas Tirith in disguise. Pippin and Beregond also disobey Denethor’s orders at various points. Hobbits seem unable to follow orders! :-)

2. July 14 is National Tape Measure Day: Read a DIY/home improvement book or something related to construction.

Dead as a Door Knocker, Diane Kelly 25/07/23
The first "home-flipper" home renovation mystery, and the MC is a carpenter.

3. July 15 is Gummi Worm Day and July 20 is National Lollipop Day: Read a book that features candy or sweets (chocolates and fudge count!).

Chocolate à la Murder, Kirsten Weiss 26/07/23
While the Perfectly Proper Paranormal Museum books don't normally feature candy, this particular instalment is focused around chocolate.

4. July 30 is International Day of Friendship: Read a book set in a country not your own.

Black Magic Kitten, Sara Bourgeois 10/07/23
Set in the USA I live in the UK

5. July 31 is National Mutt Day: Read a book with a dog on the cover.

Hyperbole and a Half, Allie Brosh 11/07/23
Stylised, but definitely a dog.

1. The Return of the King (The Lord of the Rings, #3) by J.R.R. Tolkien , 2. Dead as a Door Knocker (House-Flipper Mystery, #1) by Diane Kelly , 3. Chocolate à la Murder (Perfectly Proper Paranormal Museum #4) by Kirsten Weiss , 4. Black Magic Kitten (Familiar Kitten Mysteries #1) by Sara Bourgeois , 5. Hyperbole and a Half Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened by Allie Brosh
