Because there is only one list prompt on the official 2024 challenge (13. A book that is on a Five Books List) I decided to do a mini rejects challenge of the eleven lists and awards that were suggested but not voted in.

If you'd like to join me, claim a spot below. You can approach this challenge however you would like - all of the prompts, some of the prompts, duplicates of your favorite(s), etc. It's up to you if you want if you want your books to count for both the official challenge and the rejects challenge or if you want your books to only count for one or the other.

THE PROMPTS

1. A book from the NPR “Books We Love lists (PP, Poll 6)

2. A book from the Canada Reads Book list (Poll 1)

3. A book on a banned books list (Poll 3)

5. A book on a summer reading list (Poll 9)

6. A book from the Are You Well Read in World Literature list (Poll 10)

7. A book nominated for a ŷ Choice Award (Poll 13)

/choiceawards/

dalex (912dalex) | 2646 comments Welcome everybody! I'm thrilled that there is interest in this rejects challenge!

I've added a list of participants to the first post with links directly to each person's post.

Somewhere someone expressed interest in having a tab on the Group Spreadsheet for this side challenge. Mod Emily declined the request. I'm thinking about maybe possibly creating a spreadsheet exclusively for the side challenge. I want to carefully consider how much work might be involved in not only the creation but also the maintenance. Is there anyone else who is super knowledgable about Google Sheets who'd be willing to volunteer to help with that?

message 26: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3766 comments Is everyone doing this challenge as a true reject challenge where you are not duplicating books on your ATY52 challenge? I plan to list books on both challenges and, if I read enough, to replace one with a different book. I usually only read ~55 books a year but I’m increasing that number this year and can maybe read an extra 12 next year, especially with some children’s lit. That’s a big increase, though!

message 27: by Joanna G (new)

Joanna G (joanna_g) | 320 comments Yes, I plan on doing this as no duplicates with ATY (although either this or ATY regular I will duplicate with Popsugar).

I started with Popsugar a few years ago, but didn't manage to finish one until last year. So then this year, I picked up ATY as well. I did allow myself to cross-list between the two if something qualified for both - maybe half of each challenge is double entries?

I feel like I'm in a good position to finish both this year (knock wood) - 4 prompts to go in ATY, 7 in PS, so I'm adding this challenge for next year, with the same rule - can post in both ATY and PS but not between ATY (that will hold if I do any other mini-challenges).

Maybe the year after that I'll add another challenge or impose a no cross-post rule - but we'll see how ambitious I get. I also want to keep it at a level where it is a challenge to complete, but I'm not overwhelmed.

Jacque T | 282 comments Pam wrote: "Is everyone doing this challenge as a true reject challenge where you are not duplicating books on your ATY52 challenge? ..."

Mine will be part of a larger true reject (aim for 20-30 of the rejected prompts and also trying to also do the 12 full moon names as a side challenge. None of those can overlap with the regular ATY books, but can overlap with my Read with the Book Girls or Around the World lists.

message 29: by dalex (new)

dalex (912dalex) | 2646 comments Pam wrote: "Is everyone doing this challenge as a true reject challenge where you are not duplicating books on your ATY52 challenge?"

I am. A book fits for either the regular challenge or the rejects challenge but not both.

Dixie wrote: "I'm happy to see that some of you have added my Masterpiece Theatre prompt from poll 14 - which is a list - as #12! "

I don't exactly see it as a list prompt, which is why I didn't include it as a challenge option. I mean, to find out which books count you have to look at a list but the prompt itself is more about the book being adapted to the screen than it is about the book being on a list. If people want to use it for the challenge, that's fine, but I personally don't think it fits.

message 30: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3766 comments Thanks everyone for your responses! That’s what I figured. I think I read a lot less than most of the members who complete the challenge. I’ll see if I can make it a true reject challenge! I already have a list of 73 books that I want to read in 2024 so I guess I will be doing a lot more reading next year, 1.5 books per week!

message 31: by Nike (last edited Oct 26, 2023 01:49AM) (new)

Nike | 1326 comments No, I won't. I wouldn't be able to read all if I added these as extra since so many of my books are way too large. I read 50 pages per day (I'm having problems focusing due to ME/CFS and I'm so happy that I've managed to speed up my reading this year) and so many of the books for next year are 700 pages. Therefore all of these will also be on the mayor list. I think it's fun anyway, searching for and matching titles that can be duplicated.

message 32: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3766 comments Nike - Thanks for your input! I have quite a few long books that I hope to read also.

message 33: by dalex (new)

dalex (912dalex) | 2646 comments I've updated the introduction post to indicate that it's the participants choice whether they use a book for both the official challenge and the rejects challenge or if they want to have entirely separate books for the rejects challenge. Thanks for bringing up this question, Pam.

message 34: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 3205 comments I always move things around at the end, so I might not need to double up. This year I did two rounds, and a lot of rejects, but I haven’t checked for duplicates yet. This has been a great reading year for me, but record keeping for two big challenges is wearing me down. (I’m more disorganized than ever. It’s like Senior ADD.)

I usually do the rejects at the end, but these lists are great for multiple prompts so maybe I’ll start some of these early and use it as a feeder.

Joanna G (joanna_g) | 320 comments I just noticed the link in post 1 for the Canada Reads doesn't include this years - not sure if there's a more recent version or if CBC staff just forgot to update that list.

In any case, the 2023 contenders were: Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands, Station Eleven, Mexican Gothic, Hotline and Greenwood, if any one is interested in any of those.

The 2024 longlist will likely be out in January and the 5 official finalists in February.

The link I posted is for Past Canada Reads contenders and winners so 2023 wouldn't be included. I'll add a link to the 2023 winner announcement and try to remember to update it next year when the 2023 list gets added to the past list. Thanks Joanna!

Pam, that's actually what I did for 2023. Although every time I put one in both I felt guilty. But I read enough that I eventually was able to keep them separate.

Thanks for adding those, For the first time there are books on the CBC new short list that I already read! I loved Station Eleven and Greenwood. I liked last year’s winner too - Five Little Indians. It’s a depressing topic but it was a very satisfying read.

I'm going to play this by ear. I'm doing another mini reject challenge, the 12 full moon names. Add both reject challenges to the main challenge, which for me is 62 books since if a prompt has multiple parts I plan a book to read for each part, plus another guild I belong to has two monthly challenges (Read the World, geographical locations, and Keeping It Real, which is nonfiction) and a bi-monthly Read the Beast challenge (500+ pages), and then there's the ŷ SciFi/Fantasy group for which I read 12-15 a year. So I can't say I won't double up here and there as the opportunity presents.
