Mini #1 Race to the Cornucopia

Make sure you get yourself the best resources possible at the start of the Games by getting bonus points for each of the tasks you fill. Each task can be repeated a maximum of five times. Each food item in text can be repeated once.
This mini challenge runs from June 1st to June 15 9am UTC
1 Point Tasks
- Read a book with a orange cover
- "harvest" (plural OK, no other variants) in text
- Author initials in HERACLES
- Word in title is hiding a different smaller word (of at least four letters) inside it (not the singular form or verb tense differences) - examples LimonCELLO; THINg; wereWOLF (or indeed WEREwolf); HUNGer but NOT GAMEs (as that's the singular/plural)
- One of the following food words in text (plural OK, no other variants): corn, grape, ham, bread, cheese, apple, fish, chicken, bread, rice, tomato, pepper, salt, honey, lobster
3 Point Tasks
- Horn on cover (instrument or animal equally OK. but not antlers please)
- Book set in Crete
- Book set in Idaho
- Author's name has a diacritic (Cornucopia was a concert tour for Björk. yes, it's tenuous, but go with it anyway!)
- "abundant" or "abundance" in text
- Takes place on a farm (farm meaning somewhere raising plants or animals to be sold for food)
5 Point Tasks
- Title (including subtitle) includes all the letters CORNUPIA (no need to duplicate C and O)
- The cover has at least 3 different food items
- Set in Peru, Panama, Colombia or Venezuela (or combination of them to reach the 50%)
General Notes
Locations must represent 50% or more of the setting
Colour cover must be 50% the colour (use of common sense, please)

I am so excited to start this game.
I live in Phoenix with two lovely cats, and a lot of books. And neighbors with very loud dogs. And a car with four brand new tires on it. And a very well stocked liquor cabinet, and a sharing attitude. In other words, come on over!
I am going to guess that most of you have played before, but if you have not, worry not. Everyone loves to answer questions, and questions come up even after we have all read the rules. So ask away. This is a brand new game so we will get to learn together. And of course, we will be triumphant over all of the other Tributes, because we are fabulous. I haven’t even met many of you yet, but I am confident. And competitive, in case that wasn’t clear. Teehee.
There is a spreadsheet that we will be using to claim books for tasks, and any mini-challenges that get tossed our way.
If you are uncomfortable using a spreadsheet, shout out, and we can set up a completion post thread.
There will be links for the tracking spreadsheet (the one the team will use), the rules, the minis (or whatever bits of
Keep a watch out for friend requests from the captains, and accept them if you are willing. Also, a few of you have not set up your Book Games shelves yet, so please do that when you have a chance.
Personally I love the big group challenges as it is fun to chat with everyone. I would like to ask that even if you are not much of a chatter, to check in here on this thread once a week, even if it is just to say that you are still alive and kicking.
Me, Angie, and Keli (and Sammy) are hoping that we can keep things fun and lively.

I have been known to post the occasional bit of *ahem* reading inspiration in the form of pictures of pretty people (always people who have chosen to be in the public eye, and never anything any more revealing than you'd find on a book cover). If you feel uncomfortable with this, please let me know and I'll put them behind a spoiler tag.
It's all just a bit of fun, and no disrespect is meant.
As the majority of people in the group are into men, that is what I will generally post, but if you'd prefer to see some ladies, please let me know (on the thread or via private message if you prefer), and I'll throw some into the mix!
Now that is out of the way, let me introduce you all to this year's...

(don't worry, you don't have to read extra for this!)
💘 Every day of the first month of the challenge, I'll post up two pictures and people can vote for their favourites. In the second month the winners will pair off and so on until we are left with just one winner.
💘 Each vote is worth one point. Everyone has one vote per pairing. The one with the most votes by the time I post up the next picture the following day wins.
💘 Sponsor gifts: In addition to their votes, each resident of District 1 has 50 points they can give to their favourites at any time to give them an advantage in the voting. Any amount can be sent, up to 20 points at one time.
💘 Residents from other districts or group members that aren't playing Book Games are very welcome to come along and vote. Their votes will count equally with everyone else's, but please note Sponsor Gifts are only available to district 1.
💘 Participation is 100% voluntary!
💘 Let the Games begin!

So I already know most of you, but for those I don't:
Apart from what you can gather from the post above, here's a little more about me. I'm Sammy, born in Scotland, Dutch dad, Kiwi mum, lived in the Netherlands as a kid. Currently live in Yorkshire, England where I met my hubby who I currently live with, as well as the youngest of our 2 kids (the oldest having gotten married herself last summer).
Hopefully we will be moving at some point this year. I'm hoping for Scotland, because I would love to be closer to my parents, but we'll see where the winds take us when it's time. Hubby is self-employed and works all over, so location isn't much of an issue for us.
I read pretty much anything I can get my hands on, in huge quantities, and though romance and YA aren't my favourites, I keep reading them anyway in the hope of finding something I love.
I'm a lover of big, fat, chunky books, but again, I read anything! (and I mean anything... I still have nightmares about some of the backroom books we've had the misfortune of reading! 😆)
I'll be kicking the challenge off with a re-read of Empire of the Vampire, before diving straight into a buddy read of Empire of the Damned with some folks on other teams. If anyone else fancies joining in, you'll be very welcome!
Besides that, I hugely recommend the upcoming BOM

Also book recs, keep 'em coming! I read 1-2 books a day, so always on the lookout for fun new things to add to my audible and amazon wishlists!

A bit about me. I am a single mother with a son who has Autism and spend most of my time caring for him. I also work outside the home part-time and live near Seattle, Washington. Typically I stick to mysteries and fantasy but will sometimes venture out to other genres.
@Sammy- Thirst Games looks like a lot of fun!

For those that do not know me, I'm a single mom from Portugal, Europe. I live with my sister Sónia, my not so little anymore daughter and our two troublemakers cats! I absolutely love team challenges and I've participated in a lot of them. Most of the time it's the only thing that keeps me reading.
Usually you catch me reading horror, dystopian, some sci-fi, some fantasy (specially urban fantasy) and I'm a sucker for teenager/young adult school stories.
I'll try to participate in the BoMs if there's anything that catches my eye, but usually I get put out by reading books in a timely manner.
I can't wait to see what the mods planned with this one! I'm so excited!!!! And I absolutely love the thirst games Sammy 😈

Really excited about taking part in this new challenge. I see a few familiar faces in the team and a few new ones. As District 1 we will obviously be the best team in the Games.
For those I haven't met, I'm Alison, born, raised and still living in Scotland (and in the same town). I am unfortunately forced to work for a living and to fund my book buying addiction. I do however like to go do some exploring on the weekends so if the weather's OK I'll pick a direction and head for the hills.
I'll read pretty much anything but am a bit of a mood reader. I do tend to lean more towards crime, romance and fantasy (or ideally a mix of all 3) and am less keen on historical and sci fi but it really depends on the book.
I'm currently on the last book in Neal Schusterman's Scythe trilogy which I'm really enjoying. Can't believe it's taken me this long to get around to reading it. No idea what will be next or what my first book in the challenge will be but I have no shortage of options.

I live in England, but I am originally from Texas by way of South Dakota. I have a young adult daughter, an English husband, and an old man Jack Russell. I spend my days reading, doing nails, and, at the moment, handmaking blank journals (mostly cloth cover, but I've got two paper ones planned).
I will read anything but tend to stay away from true crime, autobiographies and cosy mysteries, though I do occasionally read these. My fave genres are all the others. But I particularly love a kickass female protagonist. And fantasy - urban, high, epic, paranormal, dark- I love 'em all.
This is my first time being a co-captain but after maybe 8 NBRC group challenges, I felt it was time to take the plunge. Please be forgiving of me. 😬😬😬
I look forward to winning. ☺️

Hi Eni!
Hi Maria Jo!
Hi RachelG.!
I already said hi to Sammy and Keli and Angie, but Hi again!
Wow. We are almost all here already. I have high hopes for this team.
It looks like we have both sides of the pond well represented. I wonder if we will hit another continent as well?
Welcome to District One all!

I am very excited to start a brand new, never before played challenge and to get to kick it off with this lovely team!! I am coming to you from East Tennessee. I too, like Jenny (and a few others on the team), am a bit competitive and a lot crazy (but in a good way.....I think!)
Jenny and I tend to share a brain sometimes, so if you see us both posting the same thing within minutes of each other, worry not! You will get used to it. 😂 Oh and with Sammy also joining us this time, it should be GREAT fun!!
As Sammy said - Let the Games Begin! And may the odds be ever in our favor!!

"Service agreement" is the clue. 4 letters. Any ideas? This took me having to figure out all the other words in that section, including that lying is an issue in a game of golf. I mean really. I don't play golf.

That is a trick one....

your favorite non english native had to google what a service agreement is and what I got was
What Is a Services Agreement? A services agreement is a written contract between a service provider and a client
Now... those 4 letters don't look to me like a WRITTEN contract of any sorts... but a statement of agreement instead. Which is what I think they should have as a clue instead.
That's my 2 cents. Although I suck at crosswords. In both languages.

Hi district 1
*waves*
Sadly I won't be playing this challenge because of reasons - most of them stoopid as Sammy would say - but I'll be visiting from time to time. Specially when procrastinating at work, which I'm totally doing now.
I'm also Eni's sister, so I'm totally going to live the challenge fun vicariously through her!
Also, I am not a good shot like Katniss, but I can rant a lot, so, if any district is giving you grief, just point me in that direction and I'll march right to them to have strong powerful words with them.
I look like everyone's sweet nonna, that gives great hugs and bakes cookies... till the protective streak is awaken... then I make adult grown men quake in their boots.. It's the latin blood... no matter how diluted it is... we all have a little of the roman empire in us :D

Is this a cryptic crossword?

Looking forward to this challenge and getting to know you all! And I’m definitely down for the Thirst Games as well :)

My son is autistic too Rachel! High-functioning thankfully, but although he is now 21, in no way ready to live on his own yet (although I did teach him to cook this past year and he's really enjoying it).
How old is yours? Is/was he able to go to school? We had a LOT of trouble with schooling with ours (although he is extremely smart. Just couldn't deal with some of the rules and other kids, noise, etc.), so if you happen to be in that situation at all, feel free to rant at someone (me) who knows exactly what you're going through.

She's seriously not kidding guys. It's one of the many awesome things about her 😉

And I'm glad to see such enthusiasm for Thirst Games! I'm currently working hard behind the scenes to get everything ready (it's a dirty job but someone has to do it 😆), because if everything is ready to copy & paste before we even start, it gives me that much more time for reading! 😉
(Yeah, I may be a touch competitive too... Whatcha all say we just go and win this thing?)
Oi I'm lurking now thank you very much! Wanted to give the team a chance to say hi first before interrupting too much.

I feel so-so sorry for the great hardships you must be going through, Sammy (view spoiler) . I can hardly wait to see and drool over the fruits of your labour. 😉🤭
Waves, then melts back into the shady Woods of District 7.

I'm not kidding team! Be careful and think twice before you say something like "I'm glad they haven't made this or that a task", because it WILL make an appearance pretty quickly if you do.
Jenny and I tend to already provide them with more than enough ammunition. No need to give them more! 😂
(But even with all that, we still enjoy having you hang around Sophie, and as already established, you're one of the nice ones 😁)

Yeah, I love trees (not the ones in the Innkeeper 6 book, though).
I am sure that I am much more responsible than to have promised any concrete spinning. 🤭
Chaos mod lurking too! And I can advise that District 10 has some delicious eye candy up already!

🤭

*giggles*
Are you sure you're not trying to get even for the brown eye twitching comment inspiring a whole re-plot the mandragora quest?

See, this just proves my point! 😜
And now that Cat has managed to amp my peckishness up to full belly-rumbling, I'm going in search of lunch. As I've been stuck in the house for several days due to rubbish weather and so must venture out into the terrifying depths of our local ASDA, I may be a while...
Sammy wrote: "If there's one thing I've learned about the NBRC mods, it's that they're always lurking. That way they can use all the innocent comments we make as ammunition to create diabolical tasks for challen..."
We take inspiration wherever we can find it!
We take inspiration wherever we can find it!

"nice ones" ?!
Sammy, never trust the nice ones. Their scary minds are always hidden behind the nice and demure smiles.

We just had this conversation elsewhere. Let's just say that it's all about appearances...
And also, no-one can touch you for sheer diabolical genius mastermindedness. Just sayin'.

Nope, just a regular one. I have never learned the art of the cryptic crossword. One of these days maybe.
