All About 2025 Challenge

1 and 2: 2025 is the year of the snake in the Chinese Zodiac.
*Read a book that was published during a different year of the snake. *And one that is newly published this year.

2025 is the anniversary of a variety of historical events, listed below.
These will serve as the inspiration for this challenge. Most of the books ABOUT something (architecture, art, television, music, etc) are satisfied by fiction or nonfiction selections.

3. 461 years ago: William Shakespeare was born. Read a play

4. 211 years ago: The Star-Spangled banner was written as a poem and then set to music. Read a book that concerns itself with American history, government or politics. This could be fiction (Wide Awake or Love Is the Higher Law) or nonfiction.

5. 211 years ago: The second volume of Grimm's fairy tales was published. Read a fairy tale or fairy tale retelling. Or read something dark and horror-filled.

6. 161 years ago: Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth is published. Read a book by Jules Verne, or a book with the genre "Science Fiction".

7. 161 years ago: Charles Dickens' Our Mutual Friend is published. Read a book by Charles Dickens or a book with the genres "Literary Fiction" or "Historical Fiction".

8. 136 years ago: The Universal Exposition (World’s Fair) was held in Paris, France. Highlights included the official opening of the Eiffel Tower. Read a book that takes place in France, or a book that features architecture or architects prominently.

9. 111 years ago: James Joyces' Dubliners is published. Read a book by James Joyce or one that has the genre "Irish Literature" or "Cultural-Ireland".

10. 101 years ago: The first ever Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix, France. Read a book that features a sport/athlete that could be featured at the Winter Olypmics.

11. 91 years ago: Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay, USA became a federal prison. Read a true crime, detective or similar genre.

12. 91 years ago: Walt Disney’s character Donald Duck made his first appearance, in the Silly Symphonies cartoon The Wise Little Hen. Read a book that was the inspiration for a Disney movie (such as The Hunchback of Notre Dame) or read a book with animals for main characters (such as Jacques' Redwall series).

13. 86 years ago: John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath is published. Read a book by Steinbeck or something that qualifies as "American Literature" or "Historical Fiction".

14. 86 years ago: The superhero Batman first appeared, in Detective Comics #27. (That issue is now one of the most valuable comic books in existence, with copies selling for over $1 million.) Read a comic book or graphic novel.

15. 76 years ago: George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four was published. Read a novel by Orwell or a book with the genre "Dystopia".

16. 61 years ago: The TV quiz show Jeopardy! was first broadcast on NBC in the USA. Read a book of trivia or strange facts, or a book that deals with television (such as the SmartPop series) or inspired television (like Sherlock Holmes).

17. 61 years ago: Beatles' first American tour. Read a book about music (fiction or non), a book with a "fab four" of main male characters (like the Raven Boys).

18. 36 years ago: The glass pyramid forming the new entrance to the Louvre in Paris, France was officially opened. Read a book about art or an artist.

19. 36 years ago: The Berlin Wall, separating East and West Germany, falls 28 years after its construction. Read a book that takes place in Germany or has Culture-German as a genre tag. Or read a book that deals with people (on a large or small scale) being reunited after overcoming barriers.

20. 31 years ago: South Africa’s first full multi-racial elections were held. Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as South Africa’s first black president after more than three hundred years of white rule. Read a book with the genre "postcolonial" or "postcolonial literature".

21. 31 years ago: The first women priests in the Church of England were ordained in London. Read a book about religion or a book with feminist themes. Or both!

22. 21 years ago: Google launched its free email service, Gmail. Read a book where technology, computers, or the cyberverse plays a significant role.

23. 21 years ago: Massachusetts legalised same-sex marriages � the first U.S. state to do so. Read an LGBT book!
