35.1--BIOMEDICAL ETHICS by Terry O’Neil (174.2)
I was fully ready to hate this book, but it actually was pretty interesting. Not only does it cover the timeline of ethics in medicine from Greek and Roman times to the present, but it also presents many essay on subjects ranging from Euthanasia to Cloning to Eugenics. Considering the subject matter, it was written in layman's terms and pretty easy to follow.
and
WHAT IN THE WORD by Charles Harrington Elster (422)
This book covers people's questions about the origins to words, to grammar issues, to even how words have been "Americanized." If you are a Logophile you will LOVE this book!
This brings me to 170 points!

Finger Lickin' Fifteen. This fits 5.10 - The Allure of Alliteration & 15.3 What Women Want to Read
I give this book 4-stars. If you like this series, you'll like this book. If you haven't tried any of this series & like a good laugh, I recommend any of the series.

It's a good book. Seems like it's trying too hard, though...all the pieces fit together, but the author writes like he's trying to be deep...but doesn't manage to say anything profound. Oh, well.

30.9--Rachel Lee/GOOD MASTERS! SWEET LADIES! VOICES FROM A MEDIEVAL VILLAGE by Laura Amy Schlitz (Newbery Award, 2008)
Written as a sort of stage play for kids to perform, this story follows the many individuals who live in a Medieval Village and teaches what their jobs were and what their lives were like from beggar to noble.
and
FEATHERS by Jaqueline Woodson (Honor Book, 2008)
A new boy shows up at school and it's immediately apparent that he belongs at the school across the tracks. This story of racism and acceptance set in the 1960's is a sweet tale of the education of a group of African-American student.
This brings me to 200 points!

5.2-(Betsey Ross) I read "The Last Girls" by Lee Smith. (The cover is mostly Red, White and Blue).
I liked the premise of the story, but never felt connected to any of the women, sometimes I could't keep straight who was who! And it didn't have a complete ending for me.
But I am on the board with 5 points! Yay!

My favorite movie is The Lion King, and it's based on Hamlet. I've read it twice before and seen the play twice, but I don't remember it being so funny. Since humor doesn't really age well it must have been hilarious when it first showed.

My favorites are "Memorial Quilt, Central Park," but "A Day in Ohio" is beautiful, too.

If you want to read a Christmas story with many, many twists and zany, crazy characters then this is it. I really enjoyed it. The characters are all loopy and warm and loving and bizarre. I now want a Fruit Bat, too.
I've posted in the Discussion thread and hope that others will join in, too.

This is exactly what I am planning to do also Erin! I am glad the hear you enjoyed the book and that there is another mahjong junkie in the house! :)

Read Good Harbor by Anita Diamant.
What friendship means to me:
This book made me reflect on female friendship.
There were times in my life when I was so focused on my married and professional lives that I completely forgot about friends, particularly female friends.
Then I found myself quite isolated as I got to work away from home during the weeks for 9 years.
I got to meet a few colleagues of my own age (50+) and got very close to one of them in particular. She helped me tremendously pulling through rough time at work, breast cancer and finally giving up my job as I couldn't cope with the pressure.
She means a lot to me even now, although I'm not posted in the UK anymore and I see less of her.
Nothing can replace female friendship. Not only close friends but also women with whom we can share "girly" stuff and understand each other.
I now have a number of friends and really make an effort to keep the warmth of those relationship around me and around them.

I finished task 5.9 by reading 77 Love Sonnets by Garrison Keillor. It was quite good! One of the best collections of poems I have read, and the book is the perfect size to tuck into your purse, and has really neat paper and layout. 5 stars!

30.9-1968
(Winner)From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs Basil E. Frankweiler-5*-This is my absolute favorite book from childhood. I loved it and re-read it so often throughout the years. This time around (after many years since I have read it) I listened to the audio version. I still really enjoyed this story, partly because of the nostalgia I felt while listening. There are parts of this book that I can almost recite from memory.
AND
(Honor)Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley and Me, Elizabeth-3.5*- I had never read this book. Despite the fact, that EL Konigsburg was the author of my favorite book, I hadn't read anything else by her. I enjoyed this book also, but not nearly as much as I enjoy "The Mixed Up Files"

5.1 The Wonderful World of Disney: Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie
I originally read this book as a child, and it was still sitting on my old bookshelf in my parents house, but I didn't remember much of it, only the movie. The book is very sweet, rather droll and a bit darker than the Disney movie.

20.2--ROSA PARKS by Douglas Brinkley
Story of the woman who was so tired after a long day of work she refused to get up out of her seat on a bus and in doing so become the "mother" of the civil-rights movement in America. I am always so suprised at the fact that these people often don't see what they did as earth-shattering. In the end, accordng to Mr. Brinkley, Ms. Parks still did not understand why people saw her as so important.
This brings me to 220 points!

GREAT book and great movie!

This book is about several trips the author made to Australia. He spent several weeks there exploring odd and unusual places. He did a lot of reading about Australia and its history and ties it all into his travels.
I would LOVE to go there -- though I would spend a lot more time at Great Barrier Reef. I love scuba diving and think it would be an amazing experience! I went to Australia as a child, but of course going as an adult, and setting my own itinerary, would be amazing!
It takes so long to get there, and I have small kids, so we're not going anytime in the near future. But I can imagine it perfectly!

20.2 Civil Rights Movement: The Watsons Go to Birmingham - 1963
I love this book. Highly, highly recommend it. I think people passing my door at work thought I was insane for laughing as hard as I did at the first half.

I finished 35.4, Read about your Resolutions with:
My resolution is to reduce the clutter in my life- especially my work clutter- I have a hard time trying to figure out what to save and what to throw away.
A. Fiction: Crime and Clutter
B. Non-fiction: Throw Out Fifty Things Clear the Clutter, Find Your Life
Crime and Clutter is a "Friday Afternoon Club Mystery" but there was no mystery in the book at all. There was a lightweight plot arc involving 60's counter-culture and an absent father. But it is quite a multi-tasker: alliteration title, on the cozy mystery list, about a group of supportive women friends, with recipes.
Throw Out Fifty Things was the right book at the right time for me- it doesn't provide any guidance on filing or storage options, instead it urges the reader to deal with the emotional clutter that takes up so much time and energy.

I finished 10.5 - My birthday is in September, I chose to read Liar by Justine Larbalestier. There was a lot of controversy about this book because of the cover (The protagonist in the book is a biracial girl, described as having short nappy hair, and the original cover featured a white girl with very long hair). The publisher wound up relenting and redoing the cover with a model who actually looked like the character.
This book was interesting. The main character, Micah, is a pathological liar and you just don't know what to believe. I will say that halfway through, Larbalestier throws in a twist that many who read the book felt left down by, but I really enjoyed this book. A quick and compelling read, with a much better cover.
Current Score: 10 points
