Kelley Anne | 1619 comments This thread is for discussions of On the Prowl by Patricia Briggs.

On the Prowl is an anthology. The first story in it really needs to be read before you read Cry Wolf. The story is called Alpha and Omega and I stronly recommend that you get and read it before moving on to the book. It's basically the first 100 pages of Cry Wolf.

On the Prowl (Includes Monère Children of the Moon, #4; Alpha & Omega Prequel; World of the Lupi, #3.5; Dorina Basarab Prequel) by Sunny

Carolyn F. Read this book this weekend. Loved it. This is one of the best anthologies I've read. You must read this anthology before you read Cry Wolf, the other January review book.

message 3: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (ellenpenleysmith) I read this and while I was reading Cry Wolf I was thinking 'I wonder how confused I would be if I didn't read it' Lol. Haven't read any of the other stories in there. Mixed reviews.

message 4: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I've read this book before and really enjoyed it. I love Patricia Briggs and I'm excited that she expanded Charles' story. I actually read Cry Wolf first and was sooo confused. I had no idea where Anna had come from but I really liked that most of the events going on in the Alpha and Omega series are in the Mercy Thompson series as well. I wonder about if Anna and Mercy ever met...

message 5: by Ellen (new)

Ellen (ellenpenleysmith) I hope so! That would be heaps of fun.

message 6: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 766 comments I read this one awhile back. I really liked all the stories but Sunny's, which felt pointless to me.

message 7: by Shay (new)

Shay Can i read the Alpha & Omega series if i havn't read any other of Briggs's books? Is it mainly PNR or UF?
I read the Dorina Basarab Prequel from this antology (it was awesome!!!) and realy wanna give Briggs a chance...

message 8: by Sarah (new)

Sarah There's also another short story from Briggs that goes into the story behind the white witch in the second book, Hunting Ground. It's called "Seeing Eye" and it's in Strange Brew. It really helps give some more background.

Shay, I think you can read the Alpha and Omega series without reading the others, but I'm sure you'll want to read them anyway, they are awesome. Midnight's Daughter (with Dorina Basarab) is really good too. I think the sequel to it's coming out soon too.

message 9: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments Shay ~ You can read this series without reading the Mercy books. If you have read them it just gives you better insight or a different side to the characters.

I thought this was a great story. I liked Charles form the little we had seen him in the Mercy books, so getting to know him better was great. I also loved Anna and felt really sorry for what she had to go through.

message 10: by Kelley Anne (last edited Jan 03, 2010 10:52AM) (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments Shay - I agree with Darcy. You can read the Alpha and Omega series without reading the Mercy series. The only real thing you'll miss is what exactly the reason is that Charles is going to Chicago. There are events that happen in the first Mercy book that make it so that Charles needs to go to Chicago to investigate. So, you might be a little confused as to what exactly he is looking for and why, but it's really not that big of a deal. You would still understand the story.

As for if they are PNR or UF, I would have to say that the Mercy books are firmly in the UF catagory. And the Alpha and Omega series has a bit more romance, but for me they stil feel like UF. But they are kinda on that edge where people could probably argue it either way. So, just my opinion.

Hope you enjoy them!

message 11: by Shay (new)

Shay Thanks! I'll try the short story in this book and see how it goes from there...
:)

♥Lynn ♥ Just one thing to say really about On The Prowl, BEST SHORT STORY EVER!!!

Death's Mistress will officially come out the 5th of January but some stores already have it. I got it quite early. It was fantastic!

Tina | 39 comments I would at least read Moon Called before starting the Alpha and Omega series. In the timeline, that's where the Alpha and Omega books fall.

I'm glad I read the MT series first. I think I appreciated and loved the Alpha books more because I was already familiar with Mercy's world. Looking at reviews, it seems people who read MT first also loved the Alpha books more than the readers who didn't read the MT series first.

message 15: by Tina (new)

Tina | 39 comments Lynn - I agree. This was my favorite short story.

Jael ~ *~ Syhren ~* ~ (wwwgoodreadscomprofilejael) I've remember reading this anthology and only like Charles and Anna. Sunnys' story was ok but that Eileen Wilks one bored me to tears. Has anyone read her world of Lupi series?

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments Jael wrote: I've remember reading this anthology and only like Charles and Anna. Sunnys' story was ok but that Eileen Wilks one bored me to tears. Has anyone read her world of Lupi series?

I have read Wilks books. I liked them, but some are slow. I find the short stories that she has in somewhat in that world and you can only see that if you have read the other books. A lot of them come together in Night Season.

Carolyn F. Sarah wrote: "I read this one awhile back. I really liked all the stories but Sunny's, which felt pointless to me."

You really need to read Sunny's other books first before you read this story. It won't make much sense if you don't.

message 19: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments I am not a fan of anthologies, at all! But this was one that I had to purchase because I LOVE the Alpha and Omega story. One of those that I love to re-read!

message 20: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments Kelley Anne, I agree with you on the anthologies. I find I usually only read half the authors and with so many doing series you end up coming in the middle. But this is one that I would like for my personal library, just haven't gotten it yet.

message 21: by Mel (last edited Jan 05, 2010 05:45PM) (new)

Mel (mel_b) | 1384 comments I hated the Sunny story (I usually like a little bit more story with my sex) but I've been told that it's not comparable with her usual work.
The Eileen Wilks story was okay but I disliked the ending. It seemed a teaser for the next book and I don't like reading stories just to be told at the end that I'll need to keep reading in the next book.
I loved Karen Chance's story. It was typical Chance: fast, action packed and very funny. That story is a prequel for her spin off series but it isn't neccesary to read this before reading Midnight's Daughter. It makes it even more fun though.
And I think the Alpha and Omega story must be one of my favorite short stories ever. It felt like a whole book. It was wonderfully done and it made me order Hunting Ground the same day. I guess that's the whole point of novellas so miss Briggs did accomplish her mission.

MissSusie | 54 comments I'm getting this book thursday I can't wait to dig into it so I can move on to Cry Wolf! Thanks for the heads up on Strange Brew.

message 23: by Book Huntress (new)

Book Huntress (bookhuntress) | 7 comments OK so I am not usually a fan of short stories, by the time you really get into it the story is done and I always feel left hanging somehow. HOWEVER, I have to say this was one of the better anthologies I have read.

Patricia Briggs - Alpha & Omega: GREAT story. Does kind of leave you hanging a bit, but a great intro to the series. I guess getting to the end and finding it was the "prequel" to the series helped me feel better about it. I did thoroughly enjoy the story though and look forward to reading her next book.

Eileen Wilks - Inhuman: I liked this story, I was kept interested throughout, I would love to learn more about this world and what is going on and what will happen.

Karen Chance - Buying Trouble: OK so this is where the stories started slipping for me. Don't know if this is because I am not familiar with her stories and this world but not sure I would pick up her books based on this. Short stories set in the midst of a world need to not only interest those familiar with it, but be able to introduce new readers, I just didn't think this was that enticing.

Sunny - Mona Lisa Betwinning: I can honestly say I had to force myself to simply finish this story. I am glad to know this isn't indicative of her writing but it will take a lot for me to pick up another of her books. I just wasn't buying into any of it, and hello some story would be nice, not just sex. And again short stories set in the midst of a world need to not only interest those familiar with it, but be able to introduce new readers, and this certainly did not do that!!!

message 24: by MissSusie (new)

MissSusie | 54 comments I finished the Alpha & Omega story last night Loved it!Then remembered little details from Moon Called and know that Charles went to Chicago because of Mercy now I absolutley HAVE to get this series. I really liked both Charles & Anna and definetly want to read more of their story! Now off to read the rest of this book I've never read any of the other authors so am looking forward to them!

message 25: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Susie I love Anna and Charles. They are such a great couple and the books are so good.

message 26: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

Sandra | 4721 comments I've only read Alpha & Omega, late last night and early this morning, because I wanted to read Cry Wolf today. Loved both of them.

Will get to the other stories shortly, although the Sunny story is not sounding too promising according to those above.

message 27: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (thehopelessbibliophile) | 14 comments I really enjoyed "Alpha & Omega" in this anthology (haven't read any of the others yet). However, I'm 1/3 of the way through Cry Wolf and have yet to feel that the book is living up to its prequel. Very disappointing.

message 28: by Mel (last edited Jan 10, 2010 09:34AM) (new)

Mel (mel_b) | 1384 comments I thought Cry Wolf was okay. But Hunting Ground was much better. So I suggest you keep reading :)

message 29: by Kelley Anne (new)

Kelley Anne | 1619 comments I'm with Mel. Loved the Prequal, Cry Wolf was alright, and Hunting Ground was amazing.

message 31: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments I have to second what Mel and Kelley Anne said about this series. I am now looking forward to the next one, where when Hunting Ground came out I wasn't sure.

Mel (mel_b) | 1384 comments Unfortunately the third Alpha & Omega book won't be out for a while. I've been trying to check Briggs's homepage for a few days now but it seems to be not working. Or is it just me?

I went there and I found the below message:

Instead of immediately moving on to the next Alpha and Omega novel, I'm going to spend some time re-writing my first novel, Masques and it's unpublished sequel Wolvesbane. I love the characters in those early books, and I've always wanted to go back and try to do a better job of telling their stories. This should be fun!

Bad news for those of us that really like this series.

Darcy, what's the address cause I'm trying both patrciabriggs.com and hurog.com on Explorer and Firefox but nothing seems to be working... :(

Give those a try, they worked for me with firefox.

Nooo!! Does that mean she's also taking a break in the Mercy series? Since Silver Borne is due out soon, I'm assuming she finished writing it awhile ago. I hope it doesn't delay the Mercy series :(

message 41: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments This is what was up there for the Mercy series.

Happily, ACE has contracted for a total of seven Mercy novels, and it's possible the series could go even longer.

message 42: by Lisarenee (last edited Jan 10, 2010 04:05PM) (new)

Lisarenee | 2046 comments Silver Borne (Mercy Thompson Bk. 5) by Patricia Briggs is due out on March 30th. Not sure about the next Alpha and Omega, however, Briggs did write the following on her website:

Sandra, you need to read the other Sunny books that were written before this short story or it won't make a whole lot of sense to you.

message 45: by MissSusie (new)

MissSusie | 54 comments I too couldn't get into the Sunny story but I did enjoy the others in the book and it helped me discover some new authors!I did go out and buy Cry Wolf and am about halfway done with it I'm liking it so far!Was really mad they didn't have Hunting Ground in stock though so will have to order it online!
