message 151: by Christina Stind (new)

Christina Stind Fiona, no, I haven't read Resurrection. This is my first Tolstoy and I had to choose between Anna Karenina or War and Peace and chose this one because I have a vague memory of seeing the movie once (so I know how it ends - at least I do if the movie was true to the book...). Even though I remember the movie as good, I don't remember anything but the ending, but Anna Karenina was less daunting to me than War and Peace. The only other Russian I've read is Solszhenitzyn One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich which I really liked so I'm looking forward to this one. Resurrection sounds really good though - any other you can recommend?

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) I'm starting Epicenter: Why the Current Rumblings in the Middle East Will Change Your Future. I know a couple of people who have read it, and they both think it is incredible.

message 154: by Christina Stind (new)

Christina Stind The next Russian I'm going to tackle will be War and Peace, I think - at least that's the only one I have on my shelf currently. But I'm looking forward to Dostoyevsky as well!

message 156: by liz (new)

liz (lizevans) I've just started reading Wuthering Heights. I'm not sure I like it. The characters to me are all horrid.

message 157: by Beth A. (new)

Beth A. (bethalm) I just finished A Girl from Yamhill by Beverly Cleary. I really enjoyed it, I love her books, so it was fun to learn more about her life. I think I'll read True Grit by Charles Portis next. It's the January book for another book club I'm in.

message 163: by Tricia (new)

Tricia | 7 comments I just finished reading Ulysses by James Joyce. It's a good thing I was reading it for a class or I would not have been able to get through it.

Now I'm reading Between the Bridge and the River by Craig Ferguson. It's very surprisingly good so far.

Rhonda (rhondak) Tricia wrote: "I just finished reading Ulysses by James Joyce. It's a good thing I was reading it for a class or I would not have been able to get through it.
I often wonder whether anyone woud read Ulysses aside from a class in literature. However as difficult a read as that is, I remember reading Finnegan's Wake and that was a nightmare. I decided to read it because a friend of mine was reading it for a class and I even came to her seminar to figure out what was going on. I don't recall if we ever finished it, but it didn't leave me with a sense of closure, but maybe that was the intention of the book.

message 165: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 139 comments I started Too Close to Home by Linwood Barclay last night, a thriller that grabbed my attention right away.

message 167: by Reggia (new)

Reggia | 15 comments I recently started reading This Must Be the Place.

message 168: by Tricia (new)

Tricia | 7 comments Rhonda: The end of this book was just like you describe. I don't have a sense of closure about it. The day ends, so the book ends. I think Joyce likes to do that. I've read "Araby" from "The Dubliners" and it's similar in its ending as well.

message 169: by Tricia (last edited Jan 26, 2009 12:39PM) (new)

Tricia | 7 comments Yeah that's what I said Fiona! It is just about a guy's day. He eats breakfast, goes to a funeral, goes to work, hangs out at a library and a few other places. I think people think it's so good because he uses so many different literary styles. There's a different one for every chapter. Plus the story is supposed to parallel The Odyssey by Homer. All I got out of it was a headache and a pretty good story that could have been told in an easier format.

message 170: by Christina Stind (new)
