The worst of it is when you have book shelves full of new books you can not wait to get to and you are reading something truly horrible!!!!

Sandra (sanddune) Re #430 by Richard. Partial to books where authors alternate writing chapters. Title of The Hippos Boiled in their Tanks is revolting. And here I expect to boiled in tank like hippos, some of it is just far too many bizarre things at once. Weakens it. Sorry, realize this is blasphemy to you. Will try Kerouac one small bite at a time. Like writing of Gore Vidal. Still on Life of Pi. Have had houseguests.

Kathy (marianslibrary) | 51 comments Finished The Shack. Very good. I can't wait for bookclub to discuss it. Wonder what each member will have to say. It really makes you think about your own faith. Now I'm reading, The Graveyard Book, by Neil Gaiman. I slightly reminds me in the beginning of the 1st Harry Potter book.

message 357: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Reading right now: "Lush Life" by Richard Price, "Getting Rid of Matthew" by Jane Fallon and "Gilead."

Kathy (marianslibrary) | 51 comments Just finished The Graveyard Book - really enjoyed it! Would make a great readaloud for middle grade students. I am now reading, Sarah's Key. It was recommended to me by a friend and my Mom's bookclub is reading it right now.

message 360: by Christina Stind (new)

Christina Stind I'm reading Wonder Boys by Michael Chabon and short stories in Eldritch Horrors: Dark Tales, edited by goodreads member Henrik S. Harksen - scary stuff!
I've been wanting to read Wonder Boys for a long time and Michael Chabon's books just sounds so good so I hope I like it - then I might have a new favourite author! We'll see!

message 361: by Fiona (Titch) (last edited Apr 01, 2009 02:59AM) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) I have just finished The Attack - Yasmina Khadra. Will then listen to Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy (Audio)

message 362: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Just about to finish Anna Karenina - Leo Tolsty (Audio) after listening for 3 hrs lol. Will read The Brutal Art - Jesse Kellerman (ML).

message 363: by Christina Stind (new)

Christina Stind Can you really hear Anna karenina in three hours? My edition of it was 700+ pages!

message 364: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) yeah good question...only 3 hours?

message 365: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Christina & Allison, yes you can if its an audio on tape lol. It took just under 3hrs lol.

Christina, haven't read, Wonder Boys, but I read, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, and loved it! Let me know if you've already read it or have it on your list to read.

Beth A. (bethalm) Fiona wrote: "Just about to finish Anna Karenina - Leo Tolsty (Audio) after listening for 3 hrs lol."

Fiona, your version of Anna Karenina must have been extremely abridged. I listened to it last year and it was 33 hours long.

message 368: by Beth A. (new)

Beth A. (bethalm) I just finished The Crown Conspiracy by Michael J. Sullivan and now I'm starting Freckles by Gene Stratton-Porter.

message 369: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Beth, Saskia Wickham was the narrator hon. I won it on Ebay.

message 370: by KrisT (new)

KrisT Yeah my audio of Anna was 38 1/2 hours long, on audio cassette form. Even a short book usually takes longer than 3 hours. I don't know why they make abridged books?

message 371: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) I decided to read 8th Confession - James Patterson & Maxine Paetro for a friend.

message 372: by [deleted user] (new)

Kathy, Michael Chabon is on my list of authors to keep an eye out for. If I like this book - and I think I will - The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay along with several other of his works will definitely be on my to-read list. I'm reading Wonder Boys right now because I'm going book shopping in Copenhagen in two weeks time and want to know if I should buy some more of his books then!

message 375: by Emily (new)

Emily I just started The Old Man and the Sea. I'm going on vacation this week so I think I'm going to bring The Road and The Code of the Woosters with me.

Lorena, how are you liking In the Time of the Butterflies? It's on my short list of ones to read in the next few months.

message 377: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 139 comments Wow, there is some great reading going on here.

Alicia and Ken, you've prompted me to want to read The Shack now. A friend of mine, who is very traditionally religious, loved it, and I hate to say that I was kind of avoiding it for that reason. I am glad to hear that it appeals to those of us less traditional in our spirituality, too.

Krista, I had been looking at Little Bee the last time I was in the bookstore and thought it looked interesting. I may have to look closer now. At least I haven't bought it yet. I do have The Secret Life of Cecee Wilkes on my shelf, so let me know how you like it.

Kathy, I'm am trying to make my way to The Graveyard Book, too. Glad to hear you enjoyed it.

Fiona, I loved the mini-series movie out years ago of Shogun. I'm still working my way to I Capture the Castle. (Emilee, let me know what you think. Fiona has declared it as exceptionally wonderful.) I finished The Fiery Cross yesterday, and so now I have Snow and Ashes left to go on the Outlander series. I wasn't going to start it right away, but I caved last night and did. Now, I'm probably going to have to read more than one book at a time (I don't like doing that with fiction). I have some reading to do for an upcoming book fest.

message 378: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline (vayleen) I'm reading The Book Thief right now. I'm really enjoying the unique narrative.

message 379: by Krista (new)

Krista mallet | 5 comments Hi Kathy! I loved The Shack. It started really good and ended reallygetting good. I found there was a bit of a dry spot in the middle but if you stick with it, it will be totally worth it. I finished The Secret Life Of CeeCee Wilkes. It was not a bad read. I found myself getting a little annoyed with Cee Cee and sometimes with her daughter but it was a quick read and the storyline was not too bad. I just started to read The Wednesday Letters. I am super excited to read this one. I hope it will live up to its reputation!!!

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) I am finding it hard to concerntrate on The Brutal Art - Jesse Kellerman. So I am trying to concerntrate and read the following few books Tethered - Amy McKinnon, Confessions of a Fallen Angel - Ronan O'Brien & The Reluctant Fundamentalist - Moshin Hamid

message 382: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (marianslibrary) | 51 comments I am now reading, The True Story of Hansel and Gretel. Since our students are working on their Holocaust research, I've decided to take the plunge and read 3 that have been on my list. After that, Those Who Save Us.

message 383: by [deleted user] (new)

Kathy tell me how you like it. I bought it and would like to read it.

message 384: by [deleted user] (new)

Fiona: go buy it!

Kathy (marianslibrary) | 51 comments Emilee wrote: "Kathy tell me how you like it. I bought it and would like to read it."

I'm about halfway through it and I'm finding it very interesting, but because of the subject, it is sad.

message 386: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Kathy! I'll have to pick it up and read it.

message 387: by Kathy (new)

message 388: by [deleted user] (new)

Fiona it's just one little book. It's okay just one book.

I recently added The Hunger Games to my TBR list. I've had many recommendations for it

message 391: by [deleted user] (new)

Fiona: it's okay it just means that you have to sit home and read.

message 392: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Fiona and everyone else. I have no counted my TBR pile and I have (wait for it) 831 (thats included the library books and Mobile library books as well).

I still go and buy more or get given more lol.

message 393: by Lorena (new)

Lorena (lorenalilian) Kathy, I read the first four chapters of In the Time of The Butterflies and totally loved them, unfortunately I had to put the book aside to read another book that was borrowed from a friend, but plan to pick it up again tonight. So far is great.

message 394: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline (vayleen) Fiona, if your library doesn't have a book, you could try the ILL. They've always come through for me when I want to read a book that they don't carry. :)

message 395: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline (vayleen) A good read is worth a second try. :)
