I just received "Eastern Inferno" by Christine Alexander.

Review:
"Welcome reprint of the letters home from the battlefront of 1854-55 by Richard Temple-Godman, subaltern in the Fifth Dragoon Guards, who rode in the charge of the heavy brigade at Balaclava, survived two Crimean winters with hardly a scratch and brought all three of his horses home with him after Sebastopol surrendered. Masses of social and military detail, delightfully easy to read; many pictures from his family album (he died a major general), which established his standing, even if some of them are far from the Crimea." - Kirkus (UK)

Here are a few book I just picked up...

I waiting for my copy of "Give me Tomorrow" to arrive so if you start yours soon let me know what you think of it.

I've picked up quite a few (too many!) 2nd hand books the last month or so..but here are two I thought were interesting..

Wow, that book about Kipling's Kim sounds really interesting. I really miss having a good used book store close by! You can really get some good finds at such places.

Ok thanks for the link. ;)

Its been on my list since I heard an interview on the radio, sounds like a good book, enjoy!

Uh oh. This club is going to start costing me $$ if I start seeing things my husband would like. Just ordered the audio version for him to listen to while he works on his models.

I saw her on a short interview on t.v., am very excited about this.

One of those terrible diseases that many of us have. And my to-read list is way too long as well. I keep thinking I read enough that is should get smaller, but it doesn't.

The first sentence starts off like this:
"Abdel Sattar Al-Musawi's decomposed remains lay on the ground above his grave. His older brothers sat beside them, holding them, crying. Although he had been arrested in 1998 and killed in 2001, they had just learned of his death three days earlier, and now they had come to claim his body. 'His crime was loving freedom', said his friend Abdel Karim, who had come to find his own brother too."

I also received my copy of; "The German Army at Ypres 1914" by Jack Sheldon which is the fifth book in this series covering the German Army on the Western Front during WW1.

They all look pretty good, just got to work out when I can find the time to read them!

I just read it recently, its a pretty good book. Didn't last long on my shelf before I found time.

Awesome, Tom. I always wanted to read this set. It looks like it is the most comprehensive.

And a 1909 hard back edition of:

Gray Ghosts of the Confederacy is a history of the Confederate guerrillas who—under the ruthless command of such men as William C. Quantrill and “Bloody Bill Anderson—plunged Missouri into a bloody, vicious conflict of an intensity unequaled in any other theater of the Civil War. Among their numbers were Frank and Jesse James and Cole and James Younger, who would later become infamous by extending the tactic they had learned during the war into civilian life.

I picked up this book today at a remainder book shop:

Shah Jahan was the ruler of the Mughal empire, his name translating literally from the Persian as ‘King of the World. After ruthlessly suppressing his rivals, he went on to promote Mughal artistic and architectural achievements to the zenith of their creativity. He is responsible not only for the Taj Mahal - the tomb to his beloved wife Mumtaz - but also for the Pearl Mosque, the Red Fort, Jama Masid in Delhi, the Shalimar Gardens of Kashmir and the priceless Peacock Throne.

- seems interesting, 43 short biographies on military commanders, each is by a different author.

Supposedly offering an account from the Mahdi's point of view - should be interesting!
