For me..hmm..trying to remember. Must have been something I saw as a kid; probably syndicated re-runs of 'Mission Impossible' and 'It Takes a Thief'.
I loved how both those shows were often shot in outdoors locations, in real cities.
I was an extremely young reader of 'adult' books like 'The Taking of Pelham 123' and Joseph Wambaugh titles. 'The Poseidon Adventure' came into my hands as a lad..'Six Days of the Condor'. The Bond series; Robin Cook's 'French Connection'; The Viking Process
All this was around Grade 3 elem school. I also scored a big cadboard box of 'True Detective' magazines. What an education that was.
Films and movies..hmm, well was exposed to a lot of Eastwood, Bronson, Marvin, Van Cleef, McQueen. Hackman.
Glad to see your mention of the superb BBC 'Game, Set, & Match' starring Ian Holm. When I have a spare $200 sometime I intend buying that series. Been on my must-purchase agenda for a long time now.

some other stuff, but never led to reading thrillers.
At one time if the book and a "hammer & Sickle" on the cover, I bought it.
Here are mine:
TTSS / Smileys People / Game, Set and Match - all taken for granted. My early inspirational works were
Mr. Palfrey of Westminster - TV '80's Starring Alec McCowen
Spycatcher - TV & Radio Starring Bernard Archard
Anyone remember them with fondness?
