ScottK | 535 comments I said only 1 thing I swear I am done, I wish I was in a place where I could enjoy some mulled cider at night , or rake some leaves . :(

message 602: by ScottK (new)

ScottK | 535 comments Thanks Emilee we are making it , thank god i have a great job that I love, and that I can be there to help my Patrick out ! :)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Fall, my favorite season! That's too bad Scott, I wish you could enjoy the weather!

message 604: by [deleted user] (new)

I would love to enjoy the weather that you have Scott. I could send you some leaves from my yard. I have several huge trees and they are now starting to fall.

The one plus is that when we get them in a big pile-it's fun to jump in them!

Emma is it freezing where you are? It's about 50 right now. Sweat shirt time!

message 605: by Jen (new)

Jen | 278 comments Scott, Patrick's awesome! I know you guys have been through a lot with that over the past two years. I'll help take care of his injuries anytime! Quite frankly, he's probably still paying his own from past taxes.

I do love the apple cider but have never been a fan of apple pie. All other kinds of pie, I LOVE! Not sure why apple has never been on my list.

I am loving this fall weather. It has been so gorgeous here for the last week and a half.

message 606: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments It's not too too cold, but it's cold enough to wear all the fabulous sweaters I bought on sale awhile ago! I love bargains. :)

message 607: by [deleted user] (new)

I love bargans too! Steve & Barrys by my house is going out of business so Wednesday went w/kids we got tons of new clothes. Not that we needed them but for $4-$6 an item how could I refuse?

message 608: by ScottK (new)

ScottK | 535 comments Fall was my favorite season when I lived in Bama and then again in Portland ( except it rains alot more in Portland than in Bama, not that it bothered me though). I loved the crispness and the smells and the colors. However Fall is when the Whales come to Maui so I exchanged colors and smells for breaching whales when we least expect it on the beach !!!

Ewwww. Emilee... my fear of spiders keeps me from jumping in the leaves... Retch! Do you know how many are hiding and sneaking around in there....

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments Random thought... I love my husband!!!! He cooked me a wonderful supper tonight after I ahd been gone all day shopping!!!! I guess he wanted to show me some love after scaring the s@#T out of me yesterday with the job situation...

message 611: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments That's great Ann! Ah, spiders. I actually like them.

message 612: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I've been thinking about that, Ann, I'm so glad it worked out for both of you.

Lori - I appreciate the way you run this place, too, I've said it before. Having been one of the prime suspects on the political topic, I just want to say that for the most part, lots of us agreed and would laugh about things to blow off steam, and share internet links that helped (well, me at least) to become more informed.

However, that being said, you are the moderator, and as many of us that enjoyed it, there were probably just as many (perhaps silent) that did not. So...back to your regularly scheduled programming.

One thing I love about fall is outdoor weenie roasts. AAAAAAAAhhhhhhhh, I can still smell the smoke on my clothes.....the crisp coolness, and the juicy hotness of roasted weenies!!

:)

Roaaassssting Weeeenies....
does anyone watch I Carly? My kids are obsessed with that show, and Laura, you just totally flashed me back to one of thier episodes when you said that!

I never roasted a weenie over a fire. But totally love them hot off the grill... Yummy...

Laura, I know it wont be a very popular decision, but I appreciate the support! Really!

message 614: by Laura (last edited Oct 04, 2008 06:06PM) (new)

Laura (apenandzen) My husband loves building fires more than anything else ( I just found this out - we've been married almost 20 years! )

Anyway, when the fall comes, or even summer nights that get cool, we have this little spot he made in our backyard that is surrounded with river rocks, and when he cuts the grass he throws all the sticks and stuff in a pile nearby.

Then, on these kind of perfect nights, he builds a fire and we roast weenies! Tonight was better than most (or should I say, more peaceful) because our daughter (17) is at her homecoming dance and so it was all crickets & tree frogs singing and the fire snapping and the dogs dripping into the flames! I just love this kind of weather, and there is NOTHING like the taste of a weiner dog that's been FLAME broiled!!

Woo hoo!

PS - I've never heard of that show. When's it on?

message 615: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10552 comments Mod
its a nickalodeon tv show. I think 8pm, every nite. Its cute, made for tweens... I get sucked in when they have it on... But its not something I would watch on my own!

message 616: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Well said Laura! Lori, I adore you and your moderator abilities and so I give my full support and apologize for anything I have said that has contributed to stress on your's or any other members behalf.

That being said it was so beautiful today and my hubbie and I went out and worked hard on our much neglected yard. I no longer feel embarrassed at the state it is in.I even pulled out my fall wreath and I have such a feeling of satisfaction! A warm little glow when I look at how clean and wonderful everything looks.

message 617: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Ok, I come back from vacation and there are like a million comments to catch up on! Uuuggghhh! I went through GR withdrawal while away, but now reading all these threads is almost impossible.

Anywhooo, I had a great time in Vegas and I got through almost all of Snowflower and the Secret Fan. I need about a quarter more to finish. I now have a month break from my next MBA class, so I'm hoping to catch up on my reading list. I feel like I have so much time on my hands now, that I don't know what to do but catch up on reading and movies. lol.

Emma, hope you are feeling better. I'm sad to report that I didn't crack open AGATB, but I'm hoping to get to it soon. =)

message 618: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Hi leppaluoto,
I love to look at the clouds and see animals in them or other shapes. I do it a lot with my boyfriend here in Italy. In Belgium I would just stand in the street when I would see a whale in the clouds. what is nice also is when we are drinving in the Alps to see different shapes, mostly animals, in the shadows you see on the mountains, made by the clouds.

message 619: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Petra X, I had the same on another site for books where there was talked about politics, mainly Bush. I just wrote my thoughts about the American presidents seen from Europe and was complete told of by somebody else. Everybody his own opinion , but you don't need to start almost a war. That's why I just didn't write anything about politics here.

By the way Lori, good idea.

message 620: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments It's almost noon here in Italy and i have been getting the lovely smell of ciambella, coming out of the kitchen, flying areound my nose...it smeels sooooo soft, tender, good....

message 621: by [deleted user] (new)

Lori: spiders don't scare me. I am the designated spider "killer" in the house. I catch them and walk them outside to the garden to eat the bugs that eat our veggies. I have two children deathly afraid of spiders. Though.

Scott: I am so jealous. I love whales & dolphins. Are they the blue & humpback? I might have to visit in the winter!

message 622: by [deleted user] (new)

Lori you so need to roast Weenie's over the fire! It's a ton of fun. Then you can follow it w/marshmellows!

message 623: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 501 comments Laura, we used to have a calico and she was the sweetest cat ever! I didn't know that all calicos are female either until our vet told us. That is a really cool fact!

message 624: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 501 comments Emilee, thanks for the name of the orchard. This is where we'll go next. My youngest loves haunted houses so I know he'd love theis place. And I love ALL chocalate so homemade fudge...I'm there!

message 625: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 501 comments Scott, you can come rake our leaves anytime you want. We have a mple tree out front and it's the last tree in our block to drop its leaves! I like the first raking but it gets old fast!! And it really ticks me off when everyone slse is all done with their raking and we're still out there week after week, raking and raking!

message 626: by [deleted user] (new)

Beth: it will be an all day fun day! My kids love it. Tons of pumpkins too!

message 627: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Raking = not fun

BUT

Beautiful fall leaves = FUN
Oh, and the cider, and the pumpkins, and the sights & smells of fall. The crisp, cool nights. The crunch & woodsy smell of the leaves.

I could go on and on, I love fall so much.

Lori - I hope that when you do your weenie roast, you will let us know how glorious it was. Tonight will probably be another perfect night for it. PS - You have to get the "high test" weenies, not the fat free or reduced fat kind, to get the full effect.

Beth - We had lots of outside cats growing up (my mom was allergic), so it was always a good thing to know which ones were going to be kitten producers ;) Weird little-known fact! I love these. There's probably a book of these somewhere. (My husband is kind of an encyclopedia of these...)

message 628: by [deleted user] (new)

Leaf blowing is the best. I have a blower. Makes it go quicker then you can goof & jump in the leaves & blow them in the pile again! Love it!

message 629: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) I'm going to the library today! HURRAH!!

That's all.

message 630: by [deleted user] (new)

I am really going to log off and go read. Plus I have two movies to watch. I really need to get moving!

message 631: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Hey Saved - Do you have an intervarsity group at your school? My niece enjoys hers.

Petra in Queenstown (petra-x) Emilee I wish I had your attitude to spiders. We have horrible spiders here. Whenever it rains (a lot, I live in the rainforest) tarantulas come in. Mostly big red-legged ones. If the cats see them then its even worse as they just want to play and the spiders will hide and that means hours of taking the house apart. But we also get large millipedes of a variety called 'stinking black worms' which I don't mind. Also they never spray when I throw them out. But spiders.....

Petra in Queenstown (petra-x) Jeane - You are in Italy. I LOVE Italy. I spent many summers there when I was a kid.

message 634: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Yuk Petra, sounds like a really good reason not to like spiders! Our new neighbors keep tarantulas as pets. She's a molecular entomologist (not sure if I'm spelling it right), and she has a whole bunch of them. Not crazy about the visual, but to each her own.

message 635: by [deleted user] (new)

Petra: tarantulas are harmless. They make great pets. My sister has five. They eat crickets & grasshoppers. They just look creepy with all the hair. My sister use to have an African Bird eating spider. THey are very interesting. They eat baby mice. We always teased her that it would eat her kitten but never tried. They are huge. They make tarantulas look like ants.

The Black Widows and recluse spiders are the one's you need to be extremely carefull of their bites are fatal. I know a guy who got a recluse spider bite on his middle finger, lost his arm and has severe heart problems. The poison spreads so quickly.

Black Widows aren't around our neck of the woods. Recluse are but I do actually kill them since they are so deadly. I usually only find wolf spiders and just little garden ones that are totally harmless. I actually caught a pregant wolf spider & when I went back to where I left her she had all these cute little baby spiders. They are adorable. I know slightly weird but spiders are extremely good for our environment.

message 636: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Emilee - how do you know about all these kinds of spiders? I wouldn't know one from the next.

message 637: by [deleted user] (new)

I just learned. I grew up in the Rocky Mountains and their are tons of different species of Recluse and of course black widows. Black Widows are everywhere. My mom is scared to death. If Dad wasn't home I was getting them out of the house. I usually had to walk them to the field that was two blocks away from the house.

The prettiest spider is a bright yellow recluse spider that can be found in Southern Utah, Northern Arizona, New Mexico and Parts of Nevada. It's beautiful but deadly. I caught one in a nerds container once.

I was jsut facisnated with spiders. Most important is to learn the ones that can kill you. You just need to be proactive and handle with care.

message 638: by Petra in Queenstown (last edited Oct 05, 2008 09:08AM) (new)

Petra in Queenstown (petra-x) There aren't too many furry black widows around but when they are they sit on the wall and glare at you with bright yellow eyes. I hate them. Mostly its the red-legged ones around. They are very big and have horrible thin legs and they run at you. Agggggh.

I don't know if you have ground spiders in the Rocky Mountains. They dig holes in the ground and small boys put in stalks of octopus grass to get them out then they hold two together to make them fight. They usually bet on the outcome. These are quite big spiders, close to the palm of your hand.

Cats sometimes sit above a ground spider hole and 'fish' for them. They play with it when them when they come out, but they bite and if the cat isn't careful enough you will see it running around the garden (or three-leg hopping) miaowing loudly for a few minutes.

message 639: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 501 comments Ok, I freak over common house spiders! If I see a spider I get chills down my back and then scream for someone to get a kleenex in order to kill if. If I'm by myself, I grab a can of hairspray and spray it death!

message 640: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 501 comments Charity, I love your comment! I hope you had a great visit! Emilee, what movies?

message 641: by Beth (new)

Beth Knight (zazaknittycat) | 501 comments Laura, I like little-known facts, too. The cider we got yesterday didn't taste as good as some but the cider donuts with cinnamon-sugar topping were awesome! I'm a vegetarian and I eat soy hot dogs--I bet these wouldn't roast very well! Even though I don't eat meat, I can relate to the smell of "roasting weenies." That's a GREAT smell!

Today is the final day of our library sale, which means... BAG SALE!!!!

message 644: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Grace, I have lived in my present home for approx. 2-1/2 years. About 6 weeks after my husband and I moved in, the area was hit by a tornado that missed our house by an 1/8 of a mile. To be honest, I wasn't even aware it had happened until my husband called me and asked me if I was alright. I said sure, but our electricity has gone out and asked him why the concern. He told me he heard our area was in the path of the tornado and didn't know if I was okay. Later, when he got home, we went to check the damage and found out we could only go one way on the exit road because the other way homes had been totally devastated. What a wake up call.

I love the sound of wind in the trees, but not the sound of roofs being torn off.

message 645: by Sherry (new)

Sherry I'm packing up my china today. We're finally getting to work on the main floor with all the work that needs to be done so everything is getting packed up and put away. Now this is kind of a bummer as there will be no Thanksgiving feast in our home this year(ours is next week)but maybe Christmas dinner.

message 648: by [deleted user] (new)

Tornado's are scary! I hate them! The first time we moved to the midwest we were here for about 2 weeks when the warning went off I had to ask my kids what to do. I was use to earthquakes! Which I don't like either.
