Marjorie Fisher (margiej) | 1 comments I have been a Tolkien fan for about eight years now, which was when my mom read the Hobbit to me at about age nine. When I was about 10/11 she read LOTR to me. After that, I was hooked. For several years LOTR and TH were the only Tolkien I had read, but about two or three years ago, I read the Silmarillion (that was difficult, but I pulled through), Unfinished Tales, Children of Hurin, and about half of the Letters of JRR Tolkien. When I have the time, I plan on reading his History of Middle Earth series.
I hope to meet some more Tolkien fans here.

Arok | 23 comments Greetings, All.
I've been a Tolkien fanatic for many years now, about 30 since I first read the Hobbit, and I try to read and re-read his books often, though work does get in the way. And by the way, work for me is being a linguist, which I also owe to Tolkien. He has inspired me in many ways.
Cheers,
Arok

Taylor Nelson | 3 comments Hi all, my name's Taylor, and I've been reading Tolkien since first grade, and I'm a sophomore in college now. I've read the Hobbit, the Silmarillion, LOTR, the Book of Unfinished Tales, and the Children of Hurin. I haven't read any Tolkien books in a while (I'm currently reading G.R.R. Martin's The Song of Ice and Fire series, which is Tolkien-esk, in a way), but I've been meaning to read more of his work. My books have been falling apart due to my reading them so much over the course of ten+ years, so it may be time that I get a new set, but I don't want to part with the old ones I have.

I've been trying to get my 9 year old brother into reading the Hobbit, since that was one of my very first chapter books that I grew up reading, and, sadly, I have been unsuccessful :/

I know the disappointment of trying to get the people you love to share in this wonderful thing. For my two oldest children (now 25 and 23) I made them read "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings". I was very involved in making them read every day and guiding them somewhat toward things to read.

At first they moaned and resented us reading "The Lord of the Rings" together out loud. Sometime withing the first 100 pages both came to love LTRs. I know my son has reread it 2 or 3 times on his own and my daughter has reread it at least once on her own and says she loves it.

Now then, The two younger children (16 and 13) Claim to hate Tolkien. It tears at my heart. I did the same thing with them that I did with the older children. I was not disheartened about the moaning and complaining, but it never stopped. That lasted all the way through "Fellowship". The oldest one promised to read LTR if we would stop reading it out loud. She read it and claims to hate it. The 13 year old read "The Hobbit" on her own. She claims to hate it. What can you do except hope that some day they will come around.

Good luck with your brother. And welcome to the group.

Hello everybody! I'm new to the group and just wanted to say hi. I haven't really read that much Tolkien per-say, but I'm an avid Tolkien fan who's looking forward to hanging out here in Bag End smoking pipe-weed and discussing the problems caused by that fool of a Took!

I'm also looking forward to catching up on all of the Tolkien that I've been missing!

message 59: by [deleted user] (new)

"Greetings!" I send to all you new friends whom I will never meet.

While I have read "LOTR" and "The Hobbit" I am most interested because of numerous Tolkein comments I have had thrown my way recently.

Even I have wearied of self-promotion, so I will post in the "Other Authors" folder as that seems more appropriate.

Besides Tolkien, I love Capote, Salinger and Poe.

I consider a new book as one that was written after 1960.

G.T.

message 63: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 3 comments I'm Shelley. I am new to goodreads and this is my first group. I have been in love with Tolkien fantasy since i was 14. I have read the The Hobbit, the LOTR Trilogy, The Silmarillion, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, most of Pearl, and The Lays of Beleriand. One of my first experiences with Tolkien was when i went to my friend Arwen's, yes that is her name, house. Her dad stood over me and said, "Hello Hobbit." I am 4'10" and he is 6'5 or more. The nick name stuck every since.

Hello to a fellow hobbit. I think i have read the silmarillian 3 times. It is a beautiful book.

message 68: by Alice (new)

Alice Hello everyone!
I'm relatively new - I only got into LotR and Tolkien this past summer when I went with my friend to see the movies in theaters. Ever since, I've been happily obsessed.

So far, I've only read The Hobbit. The next book on my list is LotR but since I'm in school, though I was recently severely tempted to start, I decided to hold off until the summer, because I want to be hit by the full impact of the book and not have my reading experience be constantly interrupted. After that, I plan to read The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, Children of Hurin, everything else basically. Oh, and one day, I'd like to own the whole set of The Histories of Middle Earth.

I look forward to meeting everyone!

message 69: by Dalynn (new)

Dalynn (dalynnrmc) Hello! Found this group because a co-member in another group mentioned a group read for Silmarillion, so I figured any group doing that would be up my alley! Totally stalked his profile page and here I am! ;)

I've read Hobbit, the trilogy, and just read Silmarillion to start the year off this year. Looking forward to reading more, and excited about the "authors like Tolkien" thread at the bottom of the group page. LOL

Glad to be here and thanks for having me!

Thanks for joining us, Ian.

My introduction to Tolkien was also The Hobbit: Or There and Back Again, but as a class read at junior school in the early 70s - you've got a few years on me, I guess, but not many ;-)

message 74: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) | 16 comments Hi everyone! My name is Lianne and I'm glad I found this community =) I first read The Lord of the Rings in high school (right before the first movie came out; figured it was time to read the books) and he has been my favourite author ever since (amongst other authors, of course). Other books of his I've read are The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, The Children of Hurin and The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun as well as The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien. I also hope to get around to reading The Histories of Middle Earth at some point.

Anyways, I look forward to chatting with everyone here! =)

message 75: by Maria (new)

Maria | 10 comments Hello to the fans of Tolkien, my name is Maria and I haven't read any Tolkien books yet, I will read these four once I order them:

I've decided on these editions because they have that old school look and I want them to be hardback editions.
I know money wise is not the best option since there are new boxsets with better prices but I don't like the newer versions as much as I like those in the picture.

Kev | 1 comments Hey guys. I'm Kev and I have just finished reading the LOTR Trilogy, so I'm just starting to realize how amazing is Tolkien. I decided to read LOTR because I'm a huge Narnia fan and I thought it would be fun to read Tolkien's work. Anyway, I hope I can enjoy more Tolkien's work with all the comments here and also share a little of my personal opinion.

message 80: by Raquel (new)

Raquel | 4 comments Hello everybody! I have been a tolkien fan for a while. I re-read LOTR each year. I'm trying to find a copy of the Silmarilion in English to read it again. What I admire most of Tolkien is how he invented languages, saids and songs for each culture.

message 81: by Maria (new)

@Lianne, which edition will you decide on?
@Raquel you should look on "" there's the Silmarillion too, I will order my books from that site.
They have a 10% off everything till 14 May and free world shipping.

I tend to drive my husband crazy talking about all the reasons why I love Tolkien and why the books are better than the movies (although I do enjoy the movies too). I think he will be just as greatful as I am that I found this group! ;)

message 85: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (truckinggeek) | 1 comments Hello everyone. Been lurking here for a while since I discovered goodreads after buying a kindle. I first read the hobbit in 1977 and followed it up with lotr in the 1980's. Then life took me away from reading in general until the films came out at which time I re-read lotr and discovered the history of middle earth series. I am thinking about popping over to Oxford in Sept for the oxonmoot. It will be my first one, I've been a tolkien society member for about a year now. I guess i'd better re-read some tolkien so I don't seem a total ignoramus lol!!

message 93: by Hyarrowen (new)

Hyarrowen | 65 comments I'm a total Tolkien nut - his books are where I go when things are getting very hard, and have been since I was nine years old. I went to the girl's half of his school, and I know the country park near the Oratory on the outskirts of Birmingham, where he stayed as an adolsecent... it is, in the words of a friend who didn't know the connection, very hobbity.
I've got all his Arda books (two copies of some of them, don't know how that happened) and it's great to find other people of a similar mindest online.

There's The Languages of Tolkien's Middle-Earth, although it's out of print, so you'd need to track down a second-hand copy.

Hi Becky

The films have been great in broadening Tolkien's appeal. I hope you'll get a lot pleasure from exploring his work further.

We've just finished a Group Read of the Silmarillion, so you might want to give that a try and join in the discussions. It's generally reckoned to be a bit more heavy-weight, but I found it to be a hugely enjoyable read (even though I did have to keep double-checking the names if the huge cast of characters!).

Are you looking forward to the Hobbit movie?
