Rachael | 3 comments Yep there are a few in Amazon, which is good and there are various second hand bookshops that often have things like it so should not be a problem in getting hold of one. Thanks will look at the reviews :)

message 102: by Piotr (new)

Piotr Hello, I just joined the group. I'm a big fan of Tolkien's writings, since I was a kid. I read all of his books except ''The Letters''. Personally I believe that the best of his books are ''Sillmarilion'' and ''The Children of Hurin'', but I started with LotR of course. Best regards for all members of the group!

Norbert (norbertbook) | 11 comments Hi. I'm Norbert, from Italy

I have been reading Tolkien since 1986 and I read tLotR and the Silmarillion many, many times, both in the italian transation and in english. I read almost all the History of Middle Earth and the Unfinisched Tales, the Hobbit, the Letters, Tree and leaf, "On fairy stories"

Some ten years ago I started reading book _about_ Tolkien, such as "The Road to Middle Earth" and "Splintered Lights" and found them really interesting.

One a month I meet in a pub with other friends who love Tolkien to eat, drink, chat and (sometimes) talk about Tolkien

I think I'm a Tolkien fan(atic)
:-)

Hi, Victor. Thanks for joining the Tolkien Train!! (I've got to think of some better greetings!).

message 106: by Robyn (new)

Robyn Brown | 10 comments Thanks for the welcome all! I recently watched the trilogy of LOTR. Every time I watch I marvel at the great job they did, but immediately want to re-read the series because of all that cannot be translated to screen. The Battle of the Pelennor Fields I always thought was the best battle scene ever written. Looking forward to the read of Children of the Hurin which I received in hardback for my birthday~not sure about the Xanax part... :)

Hans Tullmann (htullmann) Hello! I am a 3rd grade teacher in California and I've enjoyed the works of Tolkien since high school. I've read The Lord of the Rings before each film in the trilogy and am looking forward to The Hobbit coming in December 2012. I've attempted to rea aloud The Hobbit to my students, but I think they are too young. I'm looking forward to reading more of Tolkien's works and getting some recommendations for modern fantasy similar to his style.

Hi Hans there's a useful thread here http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1... though not all have Tolkien's style, in either sense of the word, alas!

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/28...

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11...

These are my two favourites; The Anvil of Ice and its trilogy are not suitable for children, but the Earthsea books which you probably already know are though slightly older children than yours.

Have you tried these? http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/66...

Christine (christine01) | 18 comments Hello everyone! I am a newer Tolkien fan myself. I have listened on audio book to The Hobbit, and the first volume of The Lord of The Rings. I read The Silmarillion but I think I shall read a second time to better understand it! I am very excited to see The Hobbit when it comes out in theaters in Dec. Hope to talk with everyone soon...

Sean (carcosa) | 16 comments Hello everyone. I remember one of the first books that I picked out to read on my own at the age of somewhere around 8 to 10 was the Hobbit. I sat down all day and read it cover to cover and fell in love with fantasy and fiction ever since!! I'm soon going to read it for maybe the 4th time since the movie is coming out. I have also read the Lord of the Rings (a few times) and the Silmarillion, though I do have the Unfinished Tales and Children of Hurin which I will have to find time for!

As a teenager I even played the Middle Earth roleplaying game and made up some stories from Tolkiens world myself.

Good to be here!!!

Hi Larry - I'm an old guy, too! I knew that the day my barber clippered my eyebrows without asking me - and I was going for a Gandalf look!!

message 115: by Allison (new)

Allison | 8 comments Hello, I'm Allison. I just realized this group existed although I've been using goodreads for about a year. I read The Hobbit in high school and remember my teacher going on and on about how amazing the book is and the complexity and depth of the world and languages created-and I liked it, don't get me wrong- but I wasn't enchanted. Fast forward about ten or so years, and long after the movies are out I am introduced to and fall in love with the LOTR story via the films. I immediately reread The Hobbit and for the first time read LOTR and The Silmarillion. I am hooked and enchanted and am on year two of my yearly reading of everything. I plan to read all of the other works, starting with The Children of Hurin. I am excited to have a place to wax endless about the author and works that have deeply affected and enriched my life. Be well.

message 116: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Schlundt (bwschlundt) | 3 comments Hi, I'm Bryan. I am currently rereading (and rewatching) The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit in preparation for the Fall semester class, Tolkien's Apocalyptic Imagination, that I will be taking at the seminary I attend. I have not read any other of Tolkien's works, but for this class I look forward to reading The Silmarillion, Morgoth's Ring, The Lays of Belierand, The Tolkien Reader, and The Letters of JRR Tolkien, besides Shippey's The Road to Middle Earth and Carpenter's biography.

Welcome, Bryan. Wow, that's quite the list! Sounds like you'll have a busy (and hopefully fun and informative) Fall semester!

message 118: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Schlundt (bwschlundt) | 3 comments Thanks, Stefan! I've only heard great things about the class, so I can't wait. Will definitely get a head start on the reading, right after I finish ROTK.

message 119: by Larry (new)

Larry Welcome, Bryan! As a past seminarian, I can say that you are doing a wise thing by getting ahead on your reading. It is great you are taking this class. I wish it would have been offered back when I was in school. I hope you find this group fun and beneficial.

I first got properly into Tolkien over 20 years ago, but haven't re-read many of the works in ages. Great to find a place for discussion - hopefully it'll encourage me to go back and make the most of my Tolkien collection!

Hello, all. I'm Don and just noticed your board last night. I've read The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings at least once a year since 1975. In fact, I've read them so many times, I've worn out the last edition.

I've tried to read The Silmarillion several times but never could get beyond the first half. However, after I read your board and their recommendations I'll try this weekend and perhaps buy the audiobook. I look forward to the adventure.

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 2 comments Hi, my name is Kevin, and I collect copies of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. I have many copies of the first edition of Lord of the Rings, along with three copies of the Ace version, and three copies of The Hobbit second edition in hardcover, along with all five printing of the paperback.

I first found Tolkein when all my friends were reading them when Fellowship of the Ring came out in theaters.

L | 132 comments Dear all members of this Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ group honoring JRR Tolkien,

I am so pleased to have found this group that is dedicated to the indavidual whose work changed my future.
The Lord of the rings - This was a book that my mother gave to me at aged 11 (even before JK Rowling's Harry Potter books), and although i did not understand it as well as i do now i can say with certainty that it was a book that changed my life.
I firstly learnt to love literature, reading and books which is a passion that has now continued on throughout the years until present time. I had always read stories long before this, but Tolkien's work was something that i had not encountered before and so it intregued me completely.
Secondly i was introduced to the fantasy genre and world that was so exciting, i was wisked away into foreign lands and new creatures. It lit a spark in my imagination and one that hence delighted in creativity and all this strange to what i had only ever encountered within the world. It made my dreams come to life, hence i have since always had a love for this genre that makes you forget the 'real world' and be able to journey into the unknown.

I have so much to thank my mother for (giving me this book) and to Tolkien who is a literary genous and one who is a constant inspiration, as an aspiring writer myself who loves fantasy and all of his creation on such a vast scale. Each book is unique and this one certainly was the catalyst that changed the course of my future!
...

since LOTR i have delved deeper into Tolkien's world by reading many of his other works (alongside seeing the increadible film adaptations) & continue to be ever facinated by Middle-Earth...you could say i am a fan!

message 128: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome, Lucinda. I've experienced the same emotions and qualities like you. Tolkien grew on me with each reading. The film adaptations were fantastic but there's nothing like the books. Welcome!

message 130: by Richard (new)

Richard Sutton (richardsutton) | 68 comments Hey, all! I'm a writer because of JRRT! I first read LoTR when I was thirteen, back in the mists of time, and it has been the prism through which every other read since has been measured, even the out-of-genre stuff. I think the only one of his books I have not read is Farmer Giles of Ham, but I'll probably get to it eventually. The film versions have been breathtaking and quite true to the books (at least as close as any adaptation can come) but I am so imbued with the written words, it is hard to see any deviation at all and still enjoy the results. I suppose I try to cut GRRM some slack with the HBO series because of that. Still, in many ways, I'm glad that JRRT stopped with Hobbit, LoTR Trilogy, and the Silmarillion, because I'm well over 3400 pages into GRRM's A Song of Ice and Fire, and still waiting for resolution!

message 135: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 2 comments Hi all!

My name is Sophie and I am from Denmark. I am a self preclaimed book worm who loves to escape into other worlds when the one we live in gets too sad/complicated/boring/real or award myself with a good read when the world is good to me (which it is most of the time). And there is no better world to escape into that Middle Earth!! I am entranced by the depth contained in Tolkien's books - the languages, the descriptions, the characters. I am also a great fan of the movies that turned out to look much like my mental Middle Earth has always done...

So far I have read the trilogy, the Hobbit, the Silmarillion, Letters from Father Christmas, Roverandom and The Children of Hurin.

I look forward to learning even more about Tolkien's universe!

I'm so glad to find this group! I became a fan of Tolkien in 1977 when I read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. They are still my all-time favorite books. Thanks to Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, I have discovered a lot of other books about Hobbits and Middle Earth!

message 139: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello everyone! I'm Kristen! I was introduced to Tolkien about 10 years ago (ish) when The Lord of the Rings movies started coming out. I became obsessed and have read The Hobbit (four times), The Lord of the Rings and Tales from the Perilous Realm. I have copies of many other Tolkien books that I am looking to get into and just haven't got there yet, but I will! And soon!
Cheers!

message 142: by Samuel (new)

Samuel Medina | 5 comments Hi there! I discovered Tolkien one day in 3rd grade when I was tired of easy readers the teachers kept trying to foist on me. I looked around in the other sections of the school library, and in a rickety paperback rack i spied two words that changed my life as a reader: The Hobbit.

I'll admit I haven't read Smith of Wooton Major, but I have read the Silmarillion and Farmer Giles of Ham (I laughed so hard at some points)...

May the hair on your toes never fall out!

message 143: by Jane (new)

Jane Francis | 1 comments Hello, All! (Greetings from the US.) I was introduced to Tolkien's books by being read The Hobbit and Roverandom by my Mother and older Brother when I was younger. I went on to read them myself, and have been hooked ever since! Thanks for this group!

Dragon Owl (PRikka) | 1 comments Good evening, Tolkien fans! I have been in love with his work for over twenty years now, and have passed on the magic of his words to everyone who showed any interest. As much as I love watching the Lord of the Rings movies, I will never be able to go more than a few years without re-reading the trilogy.

message 149: by Marta (new)

Marta (vaire) | 4 comments Hi, I'm Marta. I just love Tolkien's books. I read them very often. I always get these chills while i read because his way of writing is simply beautiful. So far I've read the LOTR trilogy, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, The Children of Hurin and Roverandom. Can someone recommend a book which is not as popular as these which I have read but it's equally brilliant? Thank you!

message 150: by Flora (new)

Flora Smith (bookwormflo) Hi, I'm Flora and I am a huge Tolkein fan. I read The Hobbit in college and was instantly hooked. Since then I've read the The Silmarillion, Tales of Middle Earth, LOTR, and The Children of Hurin all multiple times except for the Children of Huriin. Once was enough for me with that one. The Silmarillion is by far my favorite. I'm not sure why I haven't found this group earlier but am glad to be here. :)
