Sorry about that! I plan to read
Tempest Rising for my Freespace. It's "in transit" to my library, so hopefully it will come in this week and I can start it as soon as I finish my other book.

As for names, I like "Divine Nine" of the ones listed on page 1.

Sandra | 25827 comments Dark Frost (Mythos Academy, #3) by Jennifer Estep
YA Paranormal Shelf
18/6/12
★★★★
Review:
Book #3 of the Mythos Academy, a YA Paranormal series by Jennifer Estep.

Like every kid, Gwen waits to do her homework till the last minute. The homework should of been done over the Christmas break, but we see her and her friends at the Crius Museum on the afternoon before school goes back. The Reapers of Chaos are counting on this and attack the Museum, killing many kids and adults alike. Gwen & friends grab the weapons from the displays and attack, eventually driving off the Reapers.

Over the holidays Gwen has been looking for the Helheim Dagger, as directed by Goddess Nike, but without success, until, she reads the paper dropped by the Reaper Girl, in the fight at the Museum, who killed her mother the year before. Apparently the Dagger is hidden somewhere in the Library of Antiquities at Mythos Academy. The race is on to find the Dagger and prevent Loki from escaping his prison.

Gwen isn't the only one looking, there are Reaper spies everywhere.

Once again we have the on again/off again romance between Gwen and Logan, a Spartan. Logan is worried Gwen will see his great secret (view spoiler) using her touch magic.

A very bright spot is the Fenrir Wolf, Nott, who tracks Gwen down and acts like a furry bodyguard. Nott is also pregnant, so we have a little bundle of wolfishness to look forward to.

Am now hanging out for #4 Crimson Frost (Mythos Academy, #4) by Jennifer Estep

Judithe | 6566 comments That's one I've been meaning to start...just waiting to I get caught up on Elemental Assassins. Has the whole series been 5 stars for you, Sandra? (If so, may have to bump it up...)

Sandra | 25827 comments Judithe, 5, 4 & then 5. (I didn't read the prequel) I wouldn't wait too long Judithe, she's still writing EA and the #4 MA comes out in a few months.

Lis | 4029 comments Yay Sandra!

About 40% done, busy Fathers Day yesterday so I didn't get much reading time.

message 72: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25827 comments Totally understandable. Our Fathers Day is in September but sadly no fathers left in my family to celebrate :(

So appreciate them while you can :)

message 73: by Lis (new)

Lis | 4029 comments Ours got off with an exciting start... My bird dog decided sometime in the night to help himself to rib bones I left on the stove and somehow managed to turn on the gas burner, unlit. Needless to say, my husband comes in saying we have a gas leak and DO NOT turn on anything. I turned off the burner and we opened all the windows and doors before anything went boom. The kids slept thru it all. Then I proceeded to cook brunch for all the fathers in our family, so I had about 16 guests to feed.

message 74: by Lis (new)

Lis | 4029 comments Funny thing in my book is that the fallen angel character is named Raffe. I named my son Rafe, short for Rafael way before I got into reading UF and PNR.

JenniJenni | 294 comments City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1) by Cassandra Clare

YA Paranormal Shelf
18 June 12
★★

This is my first book review, so this is going to be short and to the point.

I'm not a fan of YA and this book didn't do much to change that. The conversations between the characters seemed awkward and forced. The rest of the writing wasn't that bad and flowed well most of the time. The story itself was just okay. It wasn't bad and it wasn't good. There seemed to be a lot of betrayal and lies between the characters. The one thing that bothered me the most was the relationship that developed between the main character, Clary, and Jace. I won't go in to any details so as not to ruin it for anyone, but it ended kind of on the creepy (weird creepy, not scary creepy) side. I do not intend to read anymore books from the series, but would consider reading more from the author.

Lis | 4029 comments Yay Jennifer, at least you stuck with it. That one took me several attempts to finally finish.

message 78: by Lis (new)

Lis | 4029 comments Funny after the fact, dumb dog! Or dumb miscommunication for us and not getting rid of the bones. He actually opens the doors in our house so he comes and goes as he pleases, he just doesn't shut them.

message 79: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Wow, Lis...some excitement you don't need! Glad you're safe, and hope you enjoyed the brunch (now you'll need a holiday from the cooking!)

message 80: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25827 comments What an amazing dog with a semi good ending (what a waste of gas, LOL). Glad everyone stayed safe, could of been an explosive party. ROFL.

Jennifer, that is exactly the sort of thing we need in a review. I tend to ramble just so I can remember which book it is later on.

Sandra | 25827 comments Decided on Branded by Fire (Psy-Changeling, #6) by Nalini Singh for Freespace. It is the BOM and I'd put it in several challenges.

message 82: by Lis (new)

Lis | 4029 comments Luckily our gas is free since we own our well and gas rights. Makes up a little for all the crappy taxes we have to pay.

Ahhh, good choice Sandra, Riley and Mercy are one of my favorite couples. Did you get to ToN yet? I'm leaning towards a Psy Chg book too.

message 83: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25827 comments Tangle just came into the library, got the notice about 30 minutes ago :)

Branded is a re-read for me, doing them all whilst waiting for Tangle to come out - I've ordered the MMP. Looks like I'll be caught up sooner than I thought. LOL.

Very lucky on the gas front. Still, it must of been annoying, having to vent it all out of the house.

message 84: by Lis (new)

Lis | 4029 comments I just finished a re-listen of Tangle today, one of the first I tried in audio before reading. You should enjoy it, I missed a lot the first time thru, so much going on.

message 85: by JenniJenni (last edited Jun 18, 2012 07:31PM) (new)

JenniJenni | 294 comments I can't do audio books. The characters sound a certain way in my head and it's never the same as the person reading. Completely messes with my brain.

message 86: by Sue (new)

Sue (knitwitsl) | 96 comments I liked your review Jennifer. I just finished my book as well, so here goes with my first review!

The Iron King
YA Paranormal
Finished: June 18, 2012
Rating: 2.5/5

On her 16th birthday Meghan Chase finds out that her life is not what she thought it was. Puck (from A Midsummer Night's Dream) turns out to be her faery guardian and helps guide her into the courts of the Seelie and Unseelie to find her kidnapped brother.

I am very sorry to say that I did not enjoy the book. I did not connect to the characters and felt the story was aimed at a much younger crowd. I admit I do not usually read YA books, but I have read some I enjoyed. For a YA book, the ones I liked had well thought out characters and plots, just not language and situations appropriate for a young adult. This book did not have that and I felt was written beneath the level of young adult.

I am glad I finished my first book for this challenge and I look forward to the next book!

message 87: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25827 comments Yay! Sue! Congrats on your first review. Bummer you didn't like the book, hope your next one is better :)

Caroline (zombiecazz) | 108 comments I've started my book, but It's a really busy week. DD is transitioning to high school so, I've had evening meetings. It's my OH and Mum's birthday's this weekend so I've got loads of organising to do....I want some space to read :o(
The Iron Fey set of books got better as they went along. The style of writing got to me in the first book, but I managed to ignore my issues with it in the rest if the books.

I understand what you mean! My husband keeps telling me to relax and enjoy the people around me, but sometimes I have a book I really, really want to read and I'd prefer to shut myself in my room and read non-stop. Doesn't happen that way too often though!

As for the Iron Fey books, I was wondering if I was a bit harsh with my review. I still feel like it could have developed more, but maybe it was an early book and you said they get better as they go. I'll keep that in mind when looking for my next set of books from the library!

Lis | 4029 comments Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1) by Susan Ee

Finished: Angelfall by Susan Ee
Shelf: YA Paranormal
Read: 6/19/2012
Pages: 255
Rating: ★★★★
To-Be-Continued? Yes

Review: What a great Apocolyptic ride! Penryn is the keeper of her family in a world where angels are the bad guys and it's everyone for themselves. Sadly, Penryn's family consist of a schizophrenic mother who is no longer on her meds and a little sister who's paralyzed from the waist down. While foraging for food, her sister Paige is taken by a group of angels and Penryn is left with the injured angel, Raffe. She is deperate to save her sister and decides that Raffe may be her only hope in leading her to the other angels. I liked how the world building reveals itself slowly as the unlikely pair travel towards their goals. You're not choked with this alternate reality all up front trying to digest too much info, as in many first series novels. This was a pretty dark read and you really feel the despair of the character as she battles to recover her sister as she encounters obstacles that her crazy mother somehow prepared her for out of paranoia. It wasn't a fast mover in the beginning, but ewwww what an exciting finish that leaves you with many unanswered questions. I'm excited to see where this story goes from here.

JenniJenni | 294 comments Eventide (Dark Ink Chronicles #3) by Elle Jasper

FREESPACE
20 June 12
★★★★ ½

Another review...short and to the point.

This book turned out to be so much better than I thought it was going to be. It is the third book in The Dark Ink Chronicles. I loved the first one, Afterlight, but, the second one, Everdark, fell short. I did not expect the next book in the series to be this good.

As always, the author does a great job in the writing department. Everything flows well and appears to be a natural process. I gave the book 4 ½ stars instead of 5 because the majority of the book is spent in the main character's (Riley Poe) mind. I would have liked to see more exchanges between the characters.

The author opens up a brand new world to Riley and friends. I'll miss Riley the tattoo artist and her life, but I look forward to seeing what Riley the warrior will conquer in future books.

So what will it be?

Rather Ferocious Hairballs
Divine Nine

Lis | 4029 comments Divine Nine works for me too!

Also found a shiny book mentioned on another topic thread so I took it and Blaze of Memory for a spin during lunch, and Amaryllis (St. Helen's, #1) by Jayne Castle won for my Freespace read. I needed something light and fluffy to cleanse the palette after the last one.

Does anyone experience that need after reading a dark YA series? Not sure if it's the kids being hurt or victimized or just the darker UF or PNR vibe... I was in a reading funk after Hunger Games and Divergent too.

message 98: by JenniJenni (new)

JenniJenni | 294 comments Caroline and Sandra, what do you guys think about Divine Nine?

message 99: by Lis (new)

Lis | 4029 comments Team 13 doesn't have a name yet, we're not the last ones if we hurry...

message 100: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25827 comments OK. We're now Divine Nine :)

I was happy to go with the flow ;)

Lis, I'm glad Amaryllis made the cut. I just love JAK in all her incarnations. Don't get me wrong they aren't all 5 star but you always know what you'll get with a JAK novel. Great comfort reads!

Saying that I've finished Branded by Fire, just contemplating what to say in my review, because of cause when I read it the first time I didn't write one :(
