To be brutally honest with you, this book saved my marriage. No, not literally, but it gave me the smack in the face I needed to come back to God and rely on Him in my marriage. So all I can say is this book is POWERFUL. I had mixed emotions on a few of the chapters... and I don't agree with 100% of Stormie's ideas, but the vast majority hit home for me. A couple of things I didn't agree with: her saying that if a man doesn't want sex all the time, there is something majorly wrong with him. Maybe she meant it more in the "if he absolutely NEVER wants it then there's a problem", but I think the way she worded it could be misleading and cause some problematic ways of thinking. Just because men typically are more physically inclined, doesn't mean ALL men want it 100% of the time. (That's a hard lesson I myself had to learn because I was taught at a young age that sex is all men ever want.) Anyway, the second thing I wrestled with was the idea of "shut up and pray." In the end, I definitely benefit from using this advice every now and then, but I can see some potential dangers in consistently thinking that you can never speak up and that praying is the only thing you can do. While Stormie is right that "praying is the only thing that ALWAYS works", that doesn't mean it's the ONLY thing you can do in EVERY situation. You have to keep in mind that some things absolutely have to be discussed with your spouse- though saying a prayer beforehand certainly guards that conversation against going in a wrong direction. It all comes down to your discernment about what should and shouldn't be brought up. So "shutting up and praying" shouldn't be taken quite at face value.
Now that I've said my piece about what bugged me, I will say that overall has been a TREMENDOUS help to me. My marriage isn't perfect, but it's 10 times better than what it was before I read it (considering that it was handed to me in a crisis, when I was on the brink of leaving. oopsies). If you are in a similar place to what I was when I picked up the book, if you're a newlywed struggling to transition into marriage, or even if your marriage has been fine but you're looking for a way to better understand your husband and grow in your faith along the way, I highly suggest this for whatever situation you're finding yourself in. Included are guided prayers that honestly put my feelings into words better than I could have myself. And drew me closer to God when I needed Him most. I cried through most of this book and was angry for a lot of it, but when I had to wrestle with a chapter, it usually ended up giving me the most growth.
