“Car troubles?� I guessed, crossing my arms against the morning’s brisk chill. “Flat tire. And none of us feel like getting dirty.� Esther, I presumed, nodded at me. “Well, at least you’re honest.� I laughed and gestured them inside against the sharp gust of wind that buffeted across the grey waters of Loch Mirren. “Let me just get dressed and I’m happy to help.� “Thank you so much. I’m Meredith, and this is Esther, Cherise, and Shannon. Lila couldn’t make it. We’re the Book Bitches from Kingsbarns.� Meredith said this last part as though I should be suitably impressed, so I made an approving sound. Esther snorted.”

“He shook his head. “I’m not gonna run. Why would I run? I like that you need something, it gives me something to do for you.� He looked at her earnestly. “I like doing things for you.� She stared at him. Then she marched back over, muttered, “Fuck patterns,� and threw her arms around him and kissed him. He looked stunned for a split second, then he kissed her back. Really kissed her back. They were full-on making out on the lawn. They were a very, very odd couple.”

“So you have a fish?� I asked. “Yeah. A betta fish.� “Oh. Does he have a name?� “He does. Swim Shady.� I barked out a laugh. “Is he the real Swim Shady or . . .� “All the other Swim Shadys are just imitating,� he said, totally serious.”

If you can’t find a way to be subtle about your matchmaking, then I’m relieving you of your quest.� I gave the women my sternest look while using my professor lecture voice. “What about us suggests we have a knack for subtlety?� Esther barked out a laugh. The woman had a point.”
