DNF at 40%. I tried y’all, I really did. But I am very obviously not the target demographic of this book. Teen me would have gone bananas over this, but adult me just does not care about any of these characters? I can hang with YA books most of the time, but I feel like I know the entire trajectory of this duology. I’m just saving myself some time.

After reading Jack the Ripper and wanting to rip my hair out, I was skeptical about this series. But the major hype and promising summary had my curiosity winning out. And while I don’t completely dislike these books, I’m definitely not seeing what everyone else is.

The pacing is just all over the damn place. I spent most of the first book bored, mentally urging Emilia to just get on with it already. But the twists in this one threw me so far off ...more
