Quite bluntly, this is a badly put together book. It's well-written but it just has TOO MANY PERSPECTIVE SHIFTS. The story is interesting, the world is fascinating, the characters are intriguing, but the author's unwillingness to cut down to a reasonable number of perspectives makes this book a real chore to read.

finished chapter 1, but on the downside, it doesn't seem to be easing up on the intra-chapter paragraph-to-paragraph point of view shifts, which I had hoped were just for the purpose of getting readers back in gear in the intro. When will authors get what Tolkien figured out ages ago? 1 point of view per chapter, PERIOD. Anything else just frustrates and confuses the reader and slows down the narrative flow.

I'm very conflicted right now, after the awesomeness that was Wrath of Empire, I really want to get into McClellan's short stories/novellas to keep up the powder mage awesomeness, but I also really want to finally get to Stone of Farewell as I'm in the mood for more high fantasy, and Witchy Kingdom and Ember Blade just showed up at the library... I'm almost tempted to start all of them

It's a little disheartening to go from a book where I found myself reading 20+ pages in 15 minutes and start a new book and barely get thru 9 pages in my first sitting. Maybe the print's smaller in this one, I dunno, but the intro chapter is also doing a "let's jump between all the characters with 1-2 page reminders of what they're doing" which doesn't really get the narrative going.

I may not have finished it in a weekend (oh, for the days when I could just spend a weekend reading!), but Wrath of Empire has been the sort of fantasy book I love the most, the type that gets me excited about reading fantasy, the kind of book that makes me look at my to-read list and say, "I really WANT to read that 600+ page book next!" instead of "I should get back to it... someday"

I don't know how this is going to end, but I have a feeling I'm going to be REALLY glad I waited until now (3.5 months before the sequel is scheduled to be released) to read this as Brian McClellan has been building the plot up to a fever pitch on all three fronts and however this book resolves, I'm going to want the sequel ASAP.

Wrath of Empire has been a blast to read, McClellan has achieved what every author of round-robin fantasies strive for, making every one of his 3 story-lines so interesting that any chapter ending leaves me briefly upset to have to leave that character at that spot and then happy knowing that I get to continue another character's story; bravo!
