So far, I have some concerns about the bias of the author as well as some of the categorizations of people. I don’t know enough about the Puritans to know whether or not it’s fair to say that there are “Liberal Puritains and “conservative Puritans. It seems like this book will draw a narrative of how spectators paved the way for modern utilitarian education, which the author assumes is a good thing.

Fesko’s chapter on the CoW provides a great defense of this doctrine. Moving past merely citing Hosea 6:7, Fesko develops the parallel between Adam and Israel. I’m intrigued by his form of Republication, but will suspend judgment until I read his treatment of the Mosaic covenant.

In the second chapter, Fesko addresses the intra-trinitarian covenant of redemption, looking at its historical origin, scriptural foundation, and doctrinal formulation. I love the way he ends the chapter, emphasizing God’s love as a feature of covenant: “This is love: the Father sends the Son in love; the Son goes in love; and the Father and the Son pour out the Spirit in love.

In the first chapter, Fesko defines the essence of a covenant using the Children’s Catechism: a covenant is “an agreement between two or more persons. He then goes on to explore some of the features that often accompany covenants: oaths, law, animal sacrifices, blessings and curses, love, witnesses, and signs. Finally, he treats the parties of covenants (inter-Trinitarian, God and man, man and man).
