Jack Cheevers Thank you for writing and I'm delighted that you enjoyed "Act of War." The story you cited does indeed sound fascinating. However, I'm in the middle of writing a book about the early years of the Vietnam War, a project that will probably take me several more years to complete. Please say hello to your father for me and have a great Thanksgiving!
Cheers, Jack
Jack Cheevers I write modern U.S. history, and the best thing for me is being able to bring people and events from the not-so-distant past back to vivid life on the printed page. It's almost a god-like power. As a writer, you can bring an individual onto the historical stage, sketch their defining personality traits (hero or ne'er-do-well, wise man or fool), and then set in motion the historical events that propel them toward their fate. The people I write about are very real, and I try to be competely accurate and fair in my portrayals of them. I get a huge kick out of learning everything I can about an individual (from diaries, face-to-face interviews, oral histories, unpublished manuscripts, or any other valid sources). The next step is to boil the person down to their essence, in a way that's memorable to the reader.
