When my great-great grandfather was sixteen years old, he stowed away on a ship with his brother to come to America from Ireland. When they arrived in New York City, they became separated and never saw each other again. I would love to know what became of that long-lost brother of my great-great granddad's and what both young men did to try to find each other. Our branch of the family ended up farming in Southeast Kansas. I can't help but wonder what happened to the other branch of the family.

Well, my advice to aspiring writers could be pretty detailed so let me just give you the short version: Read a lot, write a lot, get instruction and learn not only the craft of writing but the business of writing, be active in a writers group, have your work critiqued, attend writers conferences, take time for inspiration, and be prepared to work hard and persevere. As you can see, like in so many other things, 1) practice pays off and 2) slow and steady wins the race.

My inspiration can come from any number of things I encounter as I simply live life: interactions and with friends and family, the beauty of God's creation, God's Word and time spent with him, times of joy as well as times of heartache and trouble, things I read or see or experience, etc. Also, deadlines can be pretty inspirational. Ha! :) Seriously, though, due dates help many writers get down to the business of writing -- and then believe it or not, the inspiration can come. And that's when magic happens.

There are lots of great things about being a writer, like working from home and getting the chance to know other writers and readers, but the best part for me is the opportunity it gives me to touch others' lives and bless or help them in some way with something I write.
