I鈥檓 a life-long history buff and I really wish time travel were a possibility鈥擨鈥檇 be off to the eighteenth century in a flash!

Since I can鈥檛 travel back in time (yet), I have done plenty of global travel: as a child I lived in England, Canada, Argentina, and Lesotho, and attended eight schools in three languages. I continued my global wanderings with a career in international development, but now I鈥檓 settled in Toronto and loving it.

The Sisters of Versailles is my first novel, though I鈥檝e been writing since I could hold a pencil. When I鈥檓 not writing I鈥檓 reading, reading, reading; disappearing down various rabbit holes of historical research, and playing lots of tennis.

I am currently reading Sisters of Versailles via NetGalley and really enjoy it. I have a question about your research. With details such as the nicknames Bijoux and Twinkles, did you find that in primary sources written by others? I love Author Notes, maps, family trees, anything that enhances the story, that the publisher is willing to do.

Glad you鈥檙e enjoying the book! There鈥檚 relatively little written about the Mailly Nesle sisters so not all the details could be based on fact. Twinkles and Bijou 鈥� no 鈥� they would have had endearments for each other, but we don鈥檛 know what they were. Only the King鈥檚 nickname for Marie Anne is based on contemporary sources (there鈥檚 a lot more information about her than about the other sisters).

I tried wherever possible to work in those little details that were known, for example Tante really was doing renovations on her Paris house in the 1730s; someone really did call Pauline a green monkey; the King really did dress as a Bat (cute!) at a masked ball, etc, etc.

Family tree... I found a great PDF of a Mailly family tree that shows clearly the relationship between the sisters and Louise鈥檚 husband and Tante, etc. I鈥檒l put a link on my website - thanks for the idea.

RIVALS is centered around the Marquise de Pompadour, but also includes stories from a selection of her rivals - it's been really fun writing it, especially the contrast between how Pompadour sees herself, and how others view her.
