John Reviews Kids Movies

In which John Green takes a long, hard look at some of his son's favorite movies, including The Lego Movie, Despicable Me 2, The Croods, and Penguins of Madagascar.

Children's movies turn out to be really interesting, discussing everything from what makes us human to how we should wield our suddenly enormous power to shape our biosphere.

Snap Questions: On the Set of Titansgrave!

In which Hank answers questions asked to him by Snapchat!

TitansGrave is a table-top, dice based RPG (like Dungeons and Dragons) that anyone will be able to play in the future, but that Hank and some friends get to play early for a YouTube show that will air in June and July on the Geek and Sundry YouTube channel:

Also, the lighting was just AMAZING in this studio so I had to shoot something...SO PRETTY!

Is Obamacare Working? The Affordable Care Act Five Years Later

In which John Green pauses, five years after the Affordable Care Act was signed into law, to consider what we know so far about the law's effectiveness and repercussions. I also look at health care in the United States more generally, and the limited scope of the Affordable Care Act relative to the size of the overall health care system in the U.S.

I got a ton of help from Aaron Carroll, who hosts the great Health Care Triage , but any errors are my fault and mine alone.

SOURCES:
More than 17% of US GDP goes to health care expenses:
The U.S. spends way more on health care than any other country:
And yet our healthcare outcomes are not generally better (and are in many cases worse):
44 (or maybe 46) million Americans were uninsured in 2009:
This NYT article assessing the ACA is excellent:
Understanding pre-existing condition exclusions:
Medical debt is the biggest cause of U.S. bankruptcy:
Employer-based insurance distorts the labor market in the United States:
Both the access and the cost savings parts of the Affordable Care Act are discussed really well at this wikipedia page:
We are nowhere close to a path to health care spending stability:
But the uninsurance rate has dropped dramatically:
And more than 12 million people have gotten insurance through the health care exchanges set up by Obamacare:
The rollout of healthcare.gov was a disaster:
Insurance premiums rising more slowly than before exchanges:
More insurance companies are participating in the exchanges this year than last year:
The law is costing less than expected:
Is the law actually improving health? It seems so at least for young adults and also for colonscopy screening rates, but much is still unknown:
Many are still uninsured and underinsurance is a huge problem:
(Don't get mad at me for linking a lot to the New York Times; they do way more data analysis and reporting on this stuff than anyone else I've come across)
Britons live longer and healthier lives than Americans despite being pretty similar lifestyle-wise:
Our health care spending will sink us in the long-run, but if anything the situation was worse before the ACA:

A Sacrifice of Individuality and the Internets

Tickets for Tour Because Awesome:

Paper Towns Trailer:

Transfer your Subbable account:

In which Hank talks about the weirdness of individuality in the internet age where the crowd is distributed and often alone...acting individually and making individual decisions, but being understood as some massive, unthinking herd. And how he thinks that the lack of proper conception of how crowds actually function could be cured by more nerds going to concerts.

It's ne thing to sacrifice your individuality, which is what I think we all do to some extent when we become part of something. It's quite another thing to have it taken from you because it makes the internet easier to understand.

What Are Paper Towns?

In which John discusses paper towns, paper streets, mountweazels, and other fictitious entries. Why do encyclopedia editors and lexicographers and cartographers occasionally make things up on purpose? And do these fictional nonfictions say anything about the relationship between the imagined and the real?

IN OTHER NEWS: The Paper Towns movie trailer will debut on The Today Show on Thursday morning!

ALSO: Check out Hold Me Closer, David Levithan's new book!

Screaming Into Pillows

Crash Course Kids: Ages 7 - 11
SciShow Kids: Ages 5 - 8

In which Hank discusses the weird required secrecy of business and how frustrating it is to be feeling things but not be able to discuss them.

Whether it's excitement or anger or frustration, I'm just not used to not being able to talk about it. I would like to find ways to avoid this, because I think business is fascinating and I want to share it with everyone. But at the moment, I can't.

Thanks to Izzy for the title inspiration.
