Q&A with Swoons Reads!
HEY FOLKS!
Swoons Reads/Macmillan just posted the Q&A I did with them on their blog! I talk about my favorite moment in "Lost in the Never Woods", my fancasts for the characters, and what my all-time favorite retelling is!
Click the image above to read the whole interview! Here's a little snippet:
What inspired you to write Lost in the Never Woods?
Ever since I was a kid, I've loved fairy tales, and Peter Pan was my all-time favorite. This meant forcing my family to withstand the 90 minute wait time for the ride at Disneyland over and over again every day, of every visit! When I was in high school, I read the original novel by JM Barrie and was blown away by how dark and sinister it was. When I was in college, I took a literature course where we basically explored different novels and did psychoanalytic criticism of stores and characters. For my term paper, I chose Peter Pan and I was flooded with inspiration for Lost in the Never Woods. It inspired me to explore the darker themes of the Peter Pan canon, and to really explore the complicated psyches of the characters. Moving to the Pacific Northwest gave me the inspiration for perfect backdrop to the story—a small coastal town where everyone knows everyone else, and the constant presence of the lush forests is both beautiful and overwhelming in size.
