Headed for the Ditch on a Sunny Day
Hey, I just came out with my new book, . I wrote it because men are in trouble, and God has a lot to say about manhood that we need to hear. As of yesterday, it became available in stores, and I hope it will be a challenge to you and an encouragement to your family. Check out the chapter below. You can learn more about it or .
Chapter 13 from :
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. —John 10:10
Tail of the Dragon is a winding forest road where men die every year. Twisting through the west boundary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, it crosses the border between North Carolina and Tennessee. Tail of the Dragon is considered one of the premier motorcycle and sports car driving experiences in the world.
Take the plunge from the top and you will hit 318 hairpin curves packed into eleven miles of US 129 with an overall elevation change of a thousand feet. That’s about twenty-nine curves per mile—a scary, sharp turn every sixty yards. An immensely exhilarating stretch of road, there are no intersections, no houses or driveways, and no businesses—just you and your vehicle going as fast as you dare through each unique curve, banked like a race track. More than 500,000 visitors a year come to Deal’s Gap to see and maybe attempt a safe run down the Tail of the Dragon. Over the past decade, the injuries are too numerous to count but average to about three fatalities a year where someone lost control and went over the edge.
DOWN WE GO!
Imagine the pounding in my heart as I raced the engine of my Harley Road King and launched into steep turn #1 down the Tail of the Dragon. The ride lived up to its billing as an exhilarating, exhausting, exciting, adrenaline high to the max. I wish you had been there to see our joy when we got to the bottom, spent but satisfied and still sitting up. After some lunch, a quick picture, and souvenirs, we headed for a more relaxed part of our road trip. Early the next morning, with a big breakfast in our stomachs, we reached the Blue Ridge Parkway, which weaves lazily through the Smokies, just in time to see the morning sun burning up the mountain mist. Then, with the valley floor far below us, we stopped at a scenic lookout for another snapshot.
As the four Harleys pulled back onto the highway, my dear friend Kevn Dekker (who co-founded our broadcast ministry Walk in the Word) was leading the way. In a fraction of a second, as he checked his mirror to make sure we were in tow, his front wheel left the narrower pavement of the mountain road that had no shoulder and slipped deeper into the culvert. In that moment he had to decide whether to attempt to yank his front wheel back to the road, forcing a fall, or to ride it out and return to the road more gradually. He chose the latter. But the Harley bottomed out hard, forcing his feet in the air and up he went. Flipping forward in a terrible somersault, he came off the cycle and, as time froze, landed on the pavement with a bounce, facedown, and toward me. Screeching to a halt, I tore off my head gear and ran to my friend, who was motionless and unconscious. Kevn insists he wasn’t knocked out, but generally speaking, the guy it happens to is less aware. After about twenty seconds he moved a bit and cried out in pain. Suffering a broken shoulder, fractured ribs, and a cracked collar bone, he was lucky to be alive, and we were very grateful for God’s hand of protection over our friend.
Kevn is a highly skilled and experienced rider, much more than I am. That’s why he was leading the way. I have mentally replayed that awful scene countless times and still can’t believe it happened so fast. How is it possible that he negotiated the Tail of the Dragon with ease and expertise but later lost control on a smooth stretch of straight roadway? In my experience, the crash happened where men crash most. Not on the hard road with all the twists and turns, but on the sunny day when all is well and they least expect to fall.
AN ANGEL OF LIGHT
God has given men a great leg up to victory and joy by revealing that our enemy Satan comes to us as an “angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). You may be hearing from the devil when you least expect it. Since the garden of Eden, his approach has always been the same. First, he disguises himself. He draws your attention to an emptiness in your marriage or a lack of satisfaction in your work. He lies to you about what you really need to be satisfied or what you must have to experience a sense of accomplishment in your life. If you just bag that bear, make that sale, conquer that woman, or climb that mountain, then you will be fulfilled as a man. The thoughts he plants are always lies because Satan is “a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks out of his own character, for he is a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44). You think you’re cruising in the sunshine when in reality you are heading into the ditch. Satan’s moves are so pathetically consistent it’s shameful we still get fooled.
Next, he divides you from the people you need most and love most deeply. C. S. Lewis in his book Screwtape Letters imagines an extended exchange of correspondence between a veteran demon and his apprentice known as Wormwood. In one of the letters instructing the younger demon, he exhorts:
“My dear Wormwood,
Through this girl and her disgusting family the patient is now getting to know more Christians every day, and very intelligent Christians, too. For a long time it will be quite impossible to remove spirituality from his life. Very well then; we must corrupt it. No doubt you have often practiced transforming yourself into an angel of light as a parade-ground exercise. Now is the time to do it in the face of the Enemy. The World and the Flesh have failed us; a third Power remains. And success of this third kind is the most glorious of all. A spoiled saint, a Pharisee, an inquisitor, or a magician, makes better sport in Hell than a mere common tyrant or debauchee.
Once he has the lie disguised as light and has divided you from those who can turn the light on for you, he moves in for the kill with his final move: destroy. Speaking of Satan, Jesus said in John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
STRONGHOLDS ARE EVERYWHERE
Spend some time talking to men and you will find that the Enemy has captured a lot of ground in the battle over lies men believe. Even Christian men have too much satanic deception rolling around in their heads—lies my friend Pastor Eric Mason calls strongholds. Eric pastors Epiphany Fellowship in Philadelphia and speaks for our , suggesting several satanic strongholds that exalt themselves against the knowledge of God in a man’s mind.
Truly fulfilling sexual practice cannot be found within monogamy = lie
Passive avoidance of family issues will improve the problems over time = lie
Avoiding deeper relationships with men conquers my fear of rejection = lie
Past failure and hurt will fade into insignificance if ignored long enough = lie
I can expect fidelity from my wife in body/mind even if I don’t reciprocate = lie
The church is weak and not the right place for a boy to learn to be a man = lie
This is just a sampling of the kind of strongholds men believe deeply and grip tightly. No matter how good things may be in your health or career or even at home, strongholds will take you down. If you are making decisions in isolation based upon the lies of the Enemy, you are headed for the ditch on a sunny day. I implore you to “keep watch over yourself (Acts 20:28).
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
1. Why is it essential that keeping a watch on your own life comes first?
2. What lies of the Enemy have you fallen prey to that need exposure to God’s light?
3. In what ways has isolation from others made it tougher for you as a man?
4. Note the list above for any lies that have taken root in you. What can you do today to tear down strongholds of deception in your life?
5. Who do you know who needs this truth, and will you share it with him today?
PRAYER
Dear Father,
Thank You for exposing my heart today to the reality of our Enemy and his schemes. I see how I can easily fall prey to believing lies about myself and what is best for me and my family. Please grant me greater awareness to the angel of light and let me be alerted to his attempts to separate me from brothers who can be all You desire. Give me watchful eyes and listening ears to Satan’s attack upon my family and let me apply my greatest urgency to being a godly man for my family and for Your glory. Help me to walk in total dependence upon You throughout this day. In the name of Jesus Christ our Savior, amen.

It’s Time to Act Like Men
I’m so excited for the coming to Dallas/Ft. Worth this November 14-15. We’re praying and asking God to do a life-changing work in the heart of every man who will be there. Check out these photos from last year. If you’re in the DFW area, you can be part of this
(Please open the article to see the flash file or player.)
As a pastor, I’ve been burdened for men for a long time. In fact, this clip from an interview with explains what it means to act like a man—and it was shot two years before the Act Like Men conferences were even conceived.
(Please open the article to see the flash file or player.)
Last, and new this conference season, is Act Like Men: 40 Days to Biblical Manhood, the book I wrote last summer. We’re giving one to every conference attender. You can and even download the first chapter. Here’s a sampling.
Excerpt from , chapter 5:
By putting you constantly in touch with men who don’t love their wives as you strive to do, Satan whispers that you are doing well because you are not like those other men. Because you are working with men who use language you don’t and profane a God you seek to worship; because you see in the news and read about men who do things you would never dream of doing on your worst day, sinful actions you would rather die than commit; you can begin to think you are a quality man when in reality you are not—not by God’s standard, not to the degree that you could be, that He longs for you to be. I am writing this book to help you but find myself deeply convicted by what I have just written. Let me say it first: I am not the quality man that I want to be, that I know God wants me to be, not yet.
We must silence the lies of our enemy and discipline our minds to remember that God is not comparing us to other men. God has declared, “You shall be holy, for I am holy (1 Peter 1:16). As you hear news or witness sinful struggles, discipline your mind to avoid self-righteous judgment and practice saying with other humble believers, “There, but for the grace of God, go I. Be alert to any prideful feelings of superiority in comparing yourself to others, something Satan is provoking you to fall into. As long as the Enemy of your soul can have you feeling superior to the next guy, he has successfully insulated your heart from evaluating your own actions and priorities according to God’s standard of what it means to act like a quality man.

Summer for the City
“But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word. Isaiah 66:2b
If you take God’s Word seriously, you don’t have to wonder why God blesses certain things. The Lord is very consistent. There are things that matter to Him. He has told us what they are, and we can expect to see Him move powerfully when we give ourselves to those priorities.
One of the ways we see God move most powerfully is when multiple things on His heart come together. Recently we were praying and planning along these lines and discussed how: 1) the unity of Christ’s church and, 2) the needs of hurting people in the city of Chicago could come together. Do you know that most of the impacting, life-on-life work for Christ going on in urban areas is happening through para-church ministries? These ministries are out on the front lines, faithfully serving where the funds are meager and the struggles are maximum—in the jails, with people on the street, caring for those enslaved by addictions—loving and showing Jesus to the least of these (Matthew 25:40). What if some leading churches in the city of Chicago could lay down their own active ministries and come together to help those who help and give hope?
So we’ve been thinking and praying about what the church can do to help those ministries in the Chicagoland area—our Judea. I called over at , and down at in the city, from , . from , and of to create an event this summer that gives some hope to our city. Of course I could have called others, but the first men we called said yes immediately. That confirmed to us the Lord’s leading for this incredible week of worship, encouragement, ministry, and generosity to lift up those who do so much to lift up others.
Watch this, tell some people about it, and if you’re anywhere near Chicago next week, come! Get your (free) tickets here: .

On the Road to Focused Sermon Prep . . .
Getting down to serious sermon prep takes focus, concentration, and at times, clearing your head of the other stuff you are thinking about. So here comes the mind dump. Hope it’s edifying for you—it sure has been for me.
Good Men, But Soooooo Different.
This week I was blessed to have a small part in the 2014 SBC Pastors Conference in Baltimore, MD, hosted by Biltmore Baptist pastor Bruce Frank. I have had the privilege of preaching at his wonderful growing church in Asheville, NC, and have a deep respect for this man. When he invited me to join the team he was gathering to minister at this amazing conference filled with gospel-preaching men, I was blessed by the honor. When I saw who else he invited, I was pleased and puzzled.
Rick Warren spoke before me and Francis Chan spoke after me. I know both of these men personally and have enjoyed a few conversations/meals with them through the years, but I just couldn’t see how our three messages would fit together in a cohesive whole for those in attendance. Wow, was I wrong, AGAIN! Pastor Rick Warren came with a broken heart to minister to the hurting men in attendance. With sensitivity and a heart to serve, he endured the pain of opening up about his son’s suicide, closing with a call forward to pray over hurting pastors. I brought the Vertical Church message on Isaiah 64:1 and Exodus 32-33 that had been in retirement since our Vertical Church Tour in 2012. It was good to go back to those themes, and it was the message Pastor Bruce asked me to bring. Francis Chan gave a clear call to seek the presence of the Lord as our highest priority, paraphrasing, “Stop going to Moses and go to the mountain. The challenge was to pursue our own intimacy with Christ through His Word and not simply feed off of other’s relationship with Him. Bam! Heard and needed. PTL
Did You Get Bumped?
I have often said that when you get bumped, you spill what you’re full of. If you’re cut off in traffic or criticized or condemned, your response reveals your heart. Jesus said it best, “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34). For that reason I was exceedingly proud of my wife this week, as she sat on a panel before almost 1000 pastors wives at the Southern Baptist Convention Pastors Conference. Toward the end, Kathy was asked about her experience with criticism in ministry.
I was hiding in the back behind the sound board and took a deep breath as she gathered herself to respond. I was blown away by the immense humility and and everyone present was, too.
Having no idea her comments would be heard beyond that room, she could have seized the opportunity to vent or gather sympathy—nope! Kathy opened her heart and spilled out faith and confidence in a sovereign God. Love her dearly.
Can I Ask a Favor?
The term favor is one of those words seized upon by some televangelists to promise things God doesn’t promise and defrauding the faith of many, which is great sin. A side affect of that sideshow, and it’s really such a shame, is the loss of what the Bible actually does teach about favor. When Pharaoh was asked why he was picking a guy in prison to be #2 over all of Egypt, he replied to his servants, “Can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God? (Genesis 41:38). Again and again we read that Joseph found favor (Genesis 35:11, 39:4, etc.)—God’s Spirit going before Joseph, making a way for Joseph, refining Joseph, elevating and using Joseph. This was the single unstoppable reality that took Joseph’s life from dream to actuality.
I have being studying and thinking about what brings God’s favor. What are the things God cannot refuse and will not turn away from? Humility? His Word being proclaimed? His Son being adored? A heart to forgive and reconcile even at great personal cost? A generosity toward the poor and afflicted? A compassion toward the hurting and displaced? Persistent praying? Fervently seeking after Him? All of the above!!! Instead of praying for God’s favor upon what we are doing, let’s anticipate His favor as we move increasingly into the things He has promised to bless with His favor.
Vertical Church Band (VCB)
Maybe the most exciting part of the 2014 SBC Pastors Conference for me was to see the lead worship in all three of the final sessions. Rick Warren used our song Not for a Moment as part of his invitation to pray over hurting pastors. It was powerful. Without question, God’s favor is upon the Vertical Church Band (). They are a group of singers, songwriters, worship leaders, and instrumentalists from our church who have published two recordings with Sony Provident out of Nashville and toured with bands like Kari Jobe, Third Day, and Skillet. Already this year they’ve toured to 41 venues outside Chicago, leading more than 120,000 people in worship. And they love to build up other worship leaders—some 700+ have attended their training workshops.
As part of this team, first Meredith Andrews () and now Jon Guerra () are also building a wonderful ministry following in their solo ministries. As more and more churches are singing VCB songs, and larger crowds of people are blessed by their musical gifts, I pray for their continued growth in humility so that nothing hinders God’s obvious intent to bless and use them immensely.
I could not be more ‘proud, if I can say that, of the way their selfless hearts are being used by the Lord, and the efforts they are putting forth to rally the church to revel in God’s great Son. As a church, we are truly blessed to worship with and be led by this team every weekend.
Here’s a little something to bless your heart.

Ok, down to sermon prep. Have a great weekend serving Christ in your local church. May He be truly exalted.

This Will Lift You
Dear Pastor/Ministry Leader:
Be encouraged today. The sun came up and God is going forth to work in His world (Hosea 6:3). As you put the final touches on your ministry prep for this weekend of worship, be assured that God is at work IN YOU to will and to do of His good pleasure (Philippians 2:13). He is completing what He has begun and won’t give up until the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6).
Stay the course, keep on going, and watch the video below. During a tough time in my ministry, God was at work in this man’s life through the power of the gospel. I couldn’t see it, I didn’t know it, but HE was at work. This is just one example.
Give 6 minutes to it and rejoice with me in the power of His Word. We are called of God, gifted for this work, and empowered by the Holy Spirit with the gospel. Have a great weekend. Serve from a grateful heart.

Where Is the Evidence?
No one worries much if the shovel and salt are in the garage when a sprinkling of snow comes in October or March—but when the blizzard comes, you want to make sure you are ready to deal with it. The greater the importance, the greater the need for confidence. Nothing is more important than a biblical assurance of your salvation. You can get a lot wrong, but still be right if you have this right. And nothing that is right will matter if you get this wrong. How do you know that you are a Christian? What reason do you have for the hope that is in you? (1 Peter 3:15)
What do you find on apple trees? Apples. What do you find on orange trees? Oranges. So what do you find on Christians? Christians bear fruit, too. And our assurance of salvation is this—Jesus said, By their fruits you will know them (Matthew 7:16). Jesus also said, he who endures to the end will be saved (Matthew 24:13).
The clearest biblical definition of assurance of salvation is this: Abiding faith and the fruit it produces. If your faith is enduring, it is genuine and it will produce fruit in your life. Sadly, many have no genuine basis for believing themselves saved. They are trusting in a formula, resting on a recipe—but not a biblical one. Paul exhorted examine yourself to see if you are in the faith (2 Corinthians 13:5). This is an issue that cannot be neglected. “Work out your salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12). Even Pastors must constantly reflect upon their assurance of salvation, considering that Paul himself acknowledged the danger and the discipline his holy fear provoked. “Lest having preached to others I myself would be disqualified”(1 Corinthians 9:27).
Never forget that many—including many among us in our churches, and many Elders and vocational ministry leaders who did many wonderful works—are in for a big-time shock in the end. Many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in Your name? On that day many will say to Me, ‘Lord, Lord, I did all of these things, these many works in Your name. And then I will say to them, ‘Depart from Me. I never knew you’ (Matthew 7:21-22).
(Please open the article to see the flash file or player.)
Genuine saving faith is demonstrated by abiding in Jesus words and the resulting freedom/fruitbearing. If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples (John 8:31). By this is my father glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples (John 15:8).

Weeping and Rejoicing—Both Are Part of the Harvest
He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him. Psalm 126:6
Healthy things multiply—it’s true, but those who endure in ministry learn to embrace both the weeping and rejoicing that accompany fruitbearing in God’s field.
Yes, healthy life leads to multiplication. It’s as irrefutable in the life of a church as it is obvious in the world around us. As spring finally springs forth in the midwest, trees are bursting with seed, flowers are opening with future life hidden inside their beauty. Soon the forest will be teeming with fawns—yes, health is seen most clearly in multiplication. What is less obvious is the death that is part of that life—the cost of the new life. “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit (John 12:24).
As pastors and church leaders we rejoice in the multiplication and the many who are blessed, but we also know the cost—in time, in travail, in petition, in perseverance. In every mulitiplication there are the few who sacrificed much for the blessing of many. Elders gave up leadership, congregants gave up comfort, pastors gave up relationships and laid down fears as they released church planters to go, or stepped out by faith and went themselves. New life quickly erases the pain of giving birth, but not the memory of the travail. I praise God for the family called Harvest Bible Fellowship and the sacrificial faith of many you will never meet who are part of that story. God knows, and we love them very deeply. We weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice (Romans 12:15).
Rejoice with Those Who Rejoice
May 4 marked an amazing milestone in rejoicing for us—from our own church family to our entire fellowship of churches.
Once again God has done something awesome. In 2000, as the first step toward fulfilling the vision of planting 10 churches in 10 years, our first ‘daughter church was planted by Pastor Ron Zappia and became Harvest Bible Chapel Naperville. We thought 10 churches in 10 years was an insanely aggressive goal, but God thought otherwise.
10 churches were planted by Harvest Bible Fellowship—in just 4 years. By the 10-year mark, there were 62 Harvest Bible Chapels around the world.
Now, 14 years into our mission of planting church-planting churches, we’ve celebrated the launch of our 100th church, in Brantford, Ontario. AND #101 and 102, in Merida, Nicaragua, and Glendale, Arizona. On deck preparing for their first worship services this weekend are 103, our 10th Harvest in Nepal, and 104, our 4th in Nicaragua. Awesome. Simply God-sized AWE-SOME.
By God’s grace, these churches aren’t just surviving, they’re thriving—more than 60,000 believers and growing in gospel-proclaiming, disciple-making, Word-centered, Christ-adoring .
Watch what God is doing. As Psalm 118:23 declares, “This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.

Say the Name!
Amen? That’s it? You’re going to close your prayer with an abrupt “AMEN?
What about the Savior?
Aren’t you going to say the name? And you preachers, lower the “God talk and say the name! Everyone says the G-O-D—there is nothing in that to denote your loyalty or demarcate your distinctiveness. You are not a God follower, you are not a religious zealot, or a pious person. You are not a vague pursuer of mystic uncertainties, or a spiritual surveyor of saintly generality. You are a Christ follower. SAY THE NAME!
• It’s by calling upon the name that we are saved. Acts 2:21
• It’s in the name that we find forgiveness. Acts 2:38
• It’s in the name, better than silver or gold, that we are healed. Acts 3:6
• It’s the name that we suffer for and the name that we stand for. Acts 4:7,10
• It’s the only name under heaven by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12
• It’s the name they were forbidden to speak of and that still offends today. Acts 5:28,40
• It’s the name that they were beaten for and rejoiced to be considered worthy. Acts 5:41
• Itthe name we gather in if we want to experience His presence. Matthew 18:20
• It’s the name we pray in for assurance of the Father hearing and answering. John 14:13
• It’s the name that every knee will someday bow before. Philippians 2:10
The name is Jesus! Say it, savor it, sing in, share it. SAY THE NAME! Every chance you get. Never let it become routine. If it seems you say “in Jesus name a lot, consider how you will see it when each prayer of your life represents 100 of your first years in eternity. How will we look back and see the name when eternity reveals just how lost we were without it? Get the flag to the top of the pole every chance you get and ALWAYS say the name above every name, the precious name of Jesus. It’s the sweetest name we know, it’s the greatest name in the history of civilization. Say it! JESUS. In JESUS name. AMEN!
When we realize that everything good we need comes to us from the Father in the name of Jesus, how can we fail to say the name and call upon that name continuously?
