As a pastor, I’ve been burdened for men for a long time. In fact, this clip from an interview with explains what it means to act like a man—and it was shot two years before the Act Like Men conferences were even conceived.

Excerpt from , chapter 5:

By putting you constantly in touch with men who don’t love their wives as you strive to do, Satan whispers that you are doing well because you are not like those other men. Because you are working with men who use language you don’t and profane a God you seek to worship; because you see in the news and read about men who do things you would never dream of doing on your worst day, sinful actions you would rather die than commit; you can begin to think you are a quality man when in reality you are not—not by God’s standard, not to the degree that you could be, that He longs for you to be. I am writing this book to help you but find myself deeply convicted by what I have just written. Let me say it first: I am not the quality man that I want to be, that I know God wants me to be, not yet.

We must silence the lies of our enemy and discipline our minds to remember that God is not comparing us to other men. God has declared, “You shall be holy, for I am holy� (1 Peter 1:16). As you hear news or witness sinful struggles, discipline your mind to avoid self-righteous judgment and practice saying with other humble believers, “There, but for the grace of God, go I.� Be alert to any prideful feelings of superiority in comparing yourself to others, something Satan is provoking you to fall into. As long as the Enemy of your soul can have you feeling superior to the next guy, he has successfully insulated your heart from evaluating your own actions and priorities according to God’s standard of what it means to act like a quality man.
