I live in Houston, but I was raised in Lubbock, Texas. I’m an animal writer. It doesn’t matter if the animals I write about are zombie-hunting dogs, dinosaurs, or giant kaiju monsters, I’m interested in that area where animals and humans intersect. I’m especially curious about the mind meld that happens with working animals. This is my point of view for examining human nature, and why I enjoy writing these books so much.

My site says I’m a writer and an explorer. My wife and I are “often travelers. Thanks to my work, I sometimes get the opportunity to visit extraordinary people in out-of-the-way places. In recent years I’ve explored parts of the Navajo Nation, Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and I did a mesmerizing 20-state roadtrip with my su

I get a lot of my ideas from what's going on in my life. I think you should write what you know best, so I try to keep it always something close to me. Whether it is a giant monster or a zombie or whatever I'm writing about, I find that if I can tether the characters, the emotions, and sometimes even the actions, then I can write a book that feels more real.
I will give you a couple of examples. Cadaver Dog is about a search and rescue worker who trains her dogs to track zombies. The book is a quasi-memoir. I used to train search and rescue dogs, particularly Human Remains or "Cadaver" Dogs, and I was very active at the time I wrote Cadaver Dogs. Some of the scenarios and characters are loosely based on events and people I've encountered in the search and rescue community. So even though it's this odd "Where the Red Fern Grows" meets "The Walking Dead," I feel that if dogs were used to track zombies, this is how it would happen and how local governments would react to the situation.
Another example is Kaijunaut, which is about astronauts encountering kaiju monsters on a strange new planet. As outlandish as the premise can be, I've worked at Johnson Space Center for the past decade and a half, so I had a basis for grounding the story in people and ideals that I'd aggregated. As one of my review cycles, I handed the book over to several trusted friends who were also engineered, and they helped me keep the physics and processes cemented in realistic terms (so no FTL travel :) ).
My upcoming book, Wendigo Road, is based on a lot of time I spent in Montana and North Dakota working on reservations. It may be giant monster madness, but it will have that tangible, grounded quality to it.
Thanks again for asking!(less)

My Booth at Authorcon IV

I’m pretty happy with the setup. This was my first time with the banner, and I like the look of the two rows of books. The dinosaur “New Profanity series sits on the short end (our left), and the Zombie Dog series straddles the length of the table.

I sold plenty of books, and I met a horde of great people: readers, horror enthusiasts, writers, and vendors. The only downside is that I didn’t regis

“He had learned well the law of club and fang, and he never forewent an advantage or drew back from a foe he had started on the way to Death. He had lessoned from Spitz, and from the chief fighting dogs of the police and mail, and knew there was no middle course. He must master or be mastered; while to show mercy was a weakness. mercy did not exist in the primordial life. It was misunderstood for fear, and such misunderstandings made for death. Kill or be killed, eat or be eaten, was the law; and this mandate, down out of the depths of Time, he obeyed.”
Jack London, The Call of the Wild
