From more recent works, though, I have to say I love Karou and Akiva from Laini Taylor's fantastic Daughter of Smoke and Bone series, and Nazafareen and Darius from Kat Ross's The Fourth Element series.(less)

There are time when I can't make progress, but those invariably have to do with life circumstances preventing me from writing, or from something in what I have previously written, so that I have to go back and fix it before I can move forward, and I just haven't figured it out yet. A writer is not a machine; even someone with no other obligations cannot just write and write and write nonstop for eight hours a day, seven days a week, without pause. We all need fallow periods.(less)

Joe Hill is a good writer, and one of the things this collection solidified for me is that short form horror is largely about crappy people making bad decisions and paying the price. That theme is on full display here, as Dennis the horrible awful pe ...more

This one is going to stick with me. Like many classic horror short stories, the protagonists make the wrong choices and suffer for it. I'd like to see the novel version featuring someone with a spine actually fighting the evil rather than rolling ove ...more

Ok, that was FUN. Goofy and clever and surprisingly wholesome. I can't remember the last time I just honestly enjoyed a book so thoroughly. If you can, read the bonus short story as well. It's a perfect capper to the tale.

Robin McKinley
“I don't put up with being messed around, and I don't suffer fools gladly. The short version of that is that I'm a bitch. Trust me, I can provide character references.”
Robin McKinley, Sunshine

H. Jackson Brown Jr.
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
H. Jackson Brown Jr., P.S. I Love You

Sarah Rees Brennan
“I expected something a little more castle-shaped," said Jamie.
Nothing lasts forever," Nick said. "Except demons, of course."
Has anyone ever told you that you're a charming conversationalist?" Jamie asked.
No," Nick replied honestly.
I cannot tell you how much that surprises me," Jamie told him, and Nick gave him a half smile.”
Sarah Rees Brennan, The Demon's Lexicon

Sarah Rees Brennan
“Fear's useless. Either something bad happens or it doesn't: If it doesn't, you've wasted time being afraid, and if it does, you've wasted time that you could have spent sharpening your weapons.”
Sarah Rees Brennan, The Demon's Lexicon

Megan Whalen Turner
“If I am the pawn of the gods, it is because they know me so well, not because they make my mind up for me.”
Megan Whalen Turner, The Queen of Attolia
