Conned. Betrayed. Damaged.

Jett's plan to clear his head with a midnight ride turns into a mission to chase a female con artist away from the Brikken Motorcycle Club and ends with murder.

To protect his freedom, Jett's only option is to bring Sydney back to the clubhouse and make sure she doesn't squeal. It isn't until Jett orders Sydney to wipe the make-up off her face and stop the act that he learns he put an innocent sixteen-year-old in his bed.

Loyalty within the club is necessary for Brikken's survival. Any woman in Jett's life will need to be untouched by betrayal and open to trusting him. He glimpses that faithfulness in Sydney when she reaches her breaking point and despite all the danger and her age, leans toward him.

Raised with Rollo's values, Chief's examples, and surrounded by the club, Jett's life-long commitment to someday step into his father's position within Brikken is put in jeopardy as he hits rock bottom while sitting in prison for the second time in his life. His path of punishment hardens his heart. But, it's his weakness for Sydney that he wears like a patch on his vest that could destroy his future.

Sydney Hawkins never depends on anyone. Her mom, her dad, her grandma were only temporary caregivers in her young life. Shuttled from one foster family to another taught Sydney every personality, every con, every manipulation, she uses to survive.

And, she uses each skill to hide her secret.

Until she meets Jett.

He's the only man who has stepped into the role of taking care of her—not as a social worker, not as a guardian, and definitely not as a foster father. He's also the one person she can't manipulate. Jett's dominating personality makes it hard to keep the secret in her life hidden. And, as the pieces she desperately clings to start to fall, she finds herself at a dead end, locked up, where the only thing she can rely on is her heart.

Through the hardships of her childhood to paying the price for her choices, she stumbles into adulthood depending on the most unlikely man who'll change the course of her life.

Chief has been out in the wild for 2 days, and I have a confession...

Some of you might remember back in January when I tried to prep readers...okay, warn readers, that my next release would be different than my usual because I was mixing two genres. Romance and Family Saga. For those who missed the news, here's the post on my website.

I actually walked away after posting that info thinking such a small % of my readers are going to know ahead of time and I was left wondering how unsuspecting readers would react when the book released. Maybe readers who did get the warning didn't understand what I was trying to convey. Maybe I should've talked more. Maybe I should've sent a newsletter out. Maybe I was overthinking the difference, because there is romance. The whole thing is romance. But, it's more. Maybe readers don't care and it's more an author thing never to cross genres or try to create a niche from two popular genres.

While my mind was bouncing around like a ping pong ball in the blender about what to do, I focused on promoting the book and I acted like it was going to be a normal release.

Then, it happened.

The very first message I received after the release, the reader grew concerned after reading the 1st chapter and asked if I was going to time jump until the heroine was an adult. I could almost feel the reader shutting off her Kindle. With brave fingers I said there's no time jumping and to keep reading.

Now, I knew a lot of romance readers hated time jumps or years where the characters are apart on the pages. So do I. I get it. But, it was because of the storyline that I mixed two genres. I couldn't leave readers out of the romance, and that romance started when the heroine was 8 years old. Readers had to see Johanna as a child. They had to be there when she grew up. Readers needed the saga part. If I hadn't mixed two genres, and only given you a romance novel, there was no way readers would've finished the book. Chief is not a book that can be read on blind faith in the author. Period.

So, here I am 2 days out from release. This message will only be read by a small % of my readers, again. But, for me, I've given one more warning. That makes me feel better because all the books in A Brikken Motorcycle Club Saga series going forward are family romance saga novels. And, just maybe, readers will know what to expect next time. Just maybe readers are excited to get the whole story from start to neverending.

I'm thrilled to announce my 50th novel is LIVE…

CHIEFÌýA Brikken Motorcycle Club SagaÌý
A deadly mistake in an otherwise routine crime for Brikken Motorcycle Club puts an eight-year-old girl in front of Chief.

Just why Chief steps up to become Johanna's guardian escapes his reasoning, nor has he wasted time trying to find an excuse beyond protecting a child's innocence from the club's criminal activities. He only knows that when he looks down into her sweet, innocent face full of curiosity instead of fear, she moves him. Her eyes are more expressive, her personality more addictive, than anything he's ever experienced.

Johanna fills a void inside of him in a way that being president of Brikken, the son of Rollo, the leader of hundreds of the roughest men, fails to satisfy.

And so, he plants Johanna in his life. He provides and gives, and makes her feel special. She isn't only his taste of freedom from the hard life he lives, but his spring, summer, fall, winter. She becomes his breath of fresh air in a world where betrayal, enemies, and a knife in the back can happen at any moment.

Through building Brikken Motorcycle Club and continuing his father's legacy, Chief deals with heartache, incarceration, secrets. Determined not to repeat his father's mistakes, he creates and manipulates the world around him, including those he permits into his life.

He does everything for Brikken.
For Rollo.
For his sons Jett, Olin, and Thorn.
For Johanna, the child, the woman, who makes it all possible.

Johanna's earliest memories center around a big man who picks her up, changes her life, and the way his beard tickles her skin. At a young age, she learned there are two kinds of people in the world. Those who love forever and those who love—or maybe can't love—and leave. Her mom left her with strangers. Nene sent her away. Karla would eventually push her away. But, from the moment Chief walks into Johanna's life, he promises to stay. No one has given her the comfort, security, and pleasure that she fearfully needs, until Chief.

Through the tribulations of her childhood, the awakening of her womanhood, and a new world filled with bikers, she learns to survive on promises, trust, and the love of one man, through the biggest struggles of her life.Ìý

Excerpt
He caught sight of something on her palm and grabbed her wrist, bending her arm. Amongst the words Columbia, Lewis, Puyallup, and Nisqually Rivers, he read his name.Chief, written in blue ink.He rubbed his thumb over her palm and watched her fingers curl. "Last I knew, there was no river named Chief," he whispered. She laughed softly, and her eyes lightened. His chest warmed. Along with her looks, her personality had changed. Her giggles more a seductive breathy caress that got his attention. Her blush highlighted her cheeks, drawing attention to her full bottom lip that was more times than not clamped between her teeth."Why did you write my name on your hand?" He let go of her.She shrugged and propped her chin on her hand. "I write your name on everything.""Like what?""My folders, my backpack, and stuff." A little line creased the area between her brows. "If I ever end up away from Tacoma, other people will know who I belong to and help me get back to you."Not Karla or Brikken or an address, only his name. He swallowed hard. Her fear of waking up somewhere else, away from everyone she knew, caused anxiety for her. He'd known that since he'd removed her from the apartment years ago."If I ever lost you, I'd find you, bug. There's nowhere that you could go that I wouldn't get you back." He lowered his upper body to the grass and looked up at the tree above him. "You're mine, and I keep what's mine."

8 years or so ago, I met a lady at a signing in Portland, who belonged to a book club. She wasn't there to meet me. In fact, her book club only read women's fiction, not romance. I remember we bonded over our dislike for public restrooms, and one thing led to another and I told her I'd send some paperback books her way. A few months later, she contacted me and asked if there was a way I could speak with her club about the book. They actually read a romance! We ended up having a chat...I have a by-reservation-only chat room on my website. That was the start of a wonderful relationship with the six ladies in the Milwaukie Book Club. I send them arc paperbacks (no digital readers in this group) and afterward, we chat.

Last week, we chatted about Chief.

Picture this.

You're reading a wonderful romance book, fall in love with the characters, and they get their happily ever after. What's the one thing a reader wants after they finish a romance book they love?

They want more. They don't want to leave the characters. They want to know what happens after the happily ever after because they really enjoyed spending time with them. Am I close?

The problem with romance category books, and the reason readers want more is the fact that there's only so much time you can cover between the meet-cute to the declaration that they love each other. Time varies, but 1 year is the average.

The only way to give more is to step into another genre. Fiction literature has no time constraints. Here are the definitions below

Romance Novels of this type of genre fiction place their primary focus on the relationship and romantic love between two people, and must have an "emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending."

Family Saga A genre of literature which chronicles the lives and doings of a family or a number of related or interconnected families over a period of time.

Now, here's the information I want to give to my readers. If you read my last newsletter, I said that my next release will cross boundaries. I'm talking genre boundaries. My next release is a Family Romance Saga…which isn't a real thing. So, for clarification, it will be placed in the ROMANCE category, and it will also be placed in the LITERATURE category, under the sub-category Saga.

Confused yet? Don't be. It will feel like a Debra Kayn novel. You're just going to get a deeper romance, more time spent in the lives of the characters, and a slower read. Slower meaning, you're going to absorb the story. It's not a book where you love it, toss it aside, and go grab another romance book, cause you're now invested in my characters. My advice to those who read 2-3 books a day is to give my next book a day to itself, maybe 2 days.

This book will solve the "want more" that readers ask for.

Soon, I will show you the cover, the blurb, the release date. It will look different. Now, you know why.

It'll be up to readers to decide if MORE is better.Ìý
