Santa Claus is Coming To Town by Cynthia Cooke From the "Love, Christmas" Boxed Set #mgtab #holidayromance

What happens when a big city girl reunites with a small town boy - magic.

When the boy is the town Santa in need of an elf - Christmas Magic. Going Home for Christmas - Four little words that can cause loads of excitement and anxiety all rolled into one. That bundle of emotions is what I wanted to capture in the Christmas novella Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. Not only does our big city career woman, Nicole have to deal with her guilt over not coming home to visit her dad for so long, but her anxiety over putting her work life on hold to do it. So many times she has put what’s really important on the back burner just until she could finish that next project. But this time, Nicole doesn’t have a choice. When her father takes a fall, she must go home and take care of him.

"Where is he now?" Nicole asked, horrified by the image of her father lying on the ground amidst the broken branches and waxy petals.

"At Mercy Hospital. You should come home."

Nicole's gaze immediately shot to the stack of papers strewn across her desk. Her dad needed her. She was all he had. A no-brainer. So why wasn't she moving? Or breathing?

"Yes, I will. I'll be there as soon as I can." She stood, staring at her desk, trying to decide what to take, and what to leave.

"Good. They're releasing him this evening, and they need someone to stay with him for the next twenty-four hours."

"All right. I'll be there."

Mary Margaret's voice softened. "It sure will be nice to see you again, sweetheart. It's been way too long."

"It has," Nicole said absently, trying to remember exactly how long. She hung up the phone. The snow falling outside changed from a picturesque fluttering to a harried flurry.

She grabbed the bulk of the files along with her laptop and dropped them into her briefcase before heading out the door; all the while, praying her father was okay. And that he had Wi-Fi.

But we all know once we go home for the holidays, it’s almost like stepping through a time portal. All those memories and emotions from days gone by come flooding back. And for Nicole, they were the ones with the handsome guy next door who broke her heart and seems to always be around, underfoot, and working his way back into her heart.

She started to climb the ladder, but her snow-laden boot slipped on the second rung and sent her falling backwards.

"It's okay, I've got you." His voice, warm and deep, was right next to her.

She exhaled in relief as she leaned back into his strong chest, her face inches from his, and all she saw were the deep green pools of his eyes. All she felt were his strong arms slipping around her, and then he was kissing her. His lips on hers, warm and soft. Her heartbeat accelerated, and she stepped to the ground, pivoting so she could wrap her arms around his neck and pull him close. His tongue slipped into her mouth, and pleasure shot through her. A small moan rose in her throat, but just as she started to lose herself in his kiss, he pulled back and let her go. "I'm sorry."

And once he takes over as the town Santa? Then there is no going back. He needs her help and he’s won’t take no for an answer. Now suddenly the career girl who doesn’t have time for Christmas is none other than Santa’s elf. And the magic has only begun.

Yes, the holidays can be filled with caroling and baking, sharing gifts and stealing kisses under the mistletoe, but most of all it is for making new memories and cherishing the old ones. So hold onto the magic, and don’t ever let it go.

Grown Up Christmas List - Donna Fasano

Blue Christmas - Traci Hall

He hopes the seaside grill he wrote his first mystery masterpiece in will kick-start his third book before his publisher drops him. Tamsyn has zero tolerance for divas, but she’s read Evan’s novel and knows he has the talent. Besides, helping him takes the focus off of spending Christmas without her family. Evan realizes he needs a miracle—could feisty Tamsyn be an angel in sneakers and a ponytail?

Santa Baby - Taylor Lee
Dancing to Eartha Kitt’s sultry list of all goodies she expected Santa Baby to put under her tree, Lily slid down the pole and stifled a sigh. A blue convertible? A sable? A Tiffany ring? Right! Like Lily could expect anything remotely like that under her tree! How about first making sure she had a tree.
At that moment she saw him. The big man with the shaggy blond hair and gleaming dark eyes was leaning casually back in his chair. His narrowed expression was hard, knowing. It was clear that he was studying her. Stunned, she quickly looked away, her carefully honed rules fleeing in her panic. The imposing man had “cop written all over him. Squashing down her terror, Lily pasted a professional smile on her face, waved to the screaming crowd, and fled the stage.

Anyone who’d ever tangled with dirty cops knew that the hard blue line protected the most egregious acts committed by one of their brothers. If anyone doubted that was true all they had to know was that Aiden was a free man and Lily was on the run.

Lily’s only hope was that this time she and Gabriella had run far enough, fast enough, that he wouldn’t be able to find them.

If he was any judge of women who shed their clothes for a living, and Zach most certainly was, he recognized her startled wide-eyed expression. He’d seen it far too many times in his line of work. It was fear, pure and simple.

The Vice Cop reminded himself all that meant was that the beautiful woman had something big to hide.

Let it Snow - Stephanie Queen

Why I Chose My Title for “Love, Christmas White Christmas by Rebecca York #mgtab

My story for the Love, Christmas collection is White Christmas, and I’ve been dreaming of lovely snow-covered holiday scenes since I was a little kid. In fact, because I knew I was going to start my story with my heroine in a snowstorm, White Christmas was the perfect title.

My family didn’t have to travel over the river and through the woods in a sleigh to my grandma’s house. But we did have to drive from Washington, DC, to Baltimore for big holiday dinners. When I was young, that journey wasn’t trivial. In the early days, we had to take Route 1, one of the most dangerous highways in the U.S. Later we could we could switch to the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, a marvel in its time.

Sometimes we’d drive through falling snow. Other times we’d just arrive in the winter dark. But inside grandma’s house, the holiday meal was always the same when we gathered around the huge dining room table. A nod to salad was provided by a relish dish of celery and carrots. But everyone was more interested in the main events: turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and sweet potatoes (which I hated as a kid but learned to love when I grew up). Sorry, I can’t remember if we had any other vegetables. The poultry and stuffing were the highlight of the dinner. For me, that was always a turkey leg. I still like dark meat. As far as I’m concerned, turkey white meat is boring.

As a child, I didn’t understood why one bowl of stuffing was “wet, and the other “dry, but I definitely preferred the dry one.

I’m going to date myself horribly by telling you that the first Christmas tree I remember was during World War II. With wartime shortages, you couldn’t buy tinsel. And it was hard to get any other holiday decorations. But my grandfather owned a florist shop, and my grandma fashioned decorations out of florist ribbon. She made them into bows and wound them around cardboard rollers, then used florist wire to fix everything to a small tree which she put on a little red table.

One of my perennial disappointments as a kid was never having lights on our Christmas tree. I envied my friends who had them, but my mom was afraid lights might start a fire, so they were banished from our house. Guess what I bought first when I got married and finally had my own tree?

I also continued my grandma’s idea of making ornaments. When my kids were little, we made a lot of them out of felt, glitter, pipe cleaners, and sequins, because we had cats who would climb our Christmas tree and knock traditional glass balls to the floor where they shattered into glittery shards.

And for the past five or six years, I’ve used the Norfolk pine in my living room as a permanent “Christmas tree.” I keep small lights and homemade ornaments on it all year round. I hope people grin when they see it on a dark winter night. I’ve included a picture of some of my ornaments hanging on my library catalogue so you can see them better than on the tree.

WORD CONFUSION: The 10 Mistakes You Are Most Likely to Make When Writing Anything #mgtab

I'd like to introduce you to friend and a wonderful teacher. One that every writer can learn from, Kathryn Johnson. I coerced her into visiting....

Even the most intelligent and educated people make screamers of writing mistakes. I know this because, when I’m not writing my own stories, I teach creative writing and edit other people’s stories. Most authors would never dream of sending me a manuscript without first running it through a spell-check program and carefully eyeballing it for errors. But I see the same sorts of mistakes in grammar or spelling, time and again. Are you among the confused when it comes to these words?

1) Lightning: This is what we are likely to see in a thunderstorm. There is no ‘E in the word. Many people misspell it as ‘lightening, which refers to making an object weigh less or making something brighter.

2) All right: This is the proper spelling (two words) when you wish to say that you agree or that you’re doing okay. ‘Alright is used informally all the time, but it has not yet been accepted into dictionaries and other standard reference sources.

3) Lay/lie: Oh, my! So many of us have trouble with these words. Here’s a simple way to sort them out (at least, as simple as it gets). We lay down an object, but we lie down when we’re tired. Lay and lie are both present-tense verbs. But ‘lay requires a direct object in the sentence. (I lay the book on the table.) If there is no direct object in present tense, then the word to use is ‘lie. Added confusion arises with past tense and past perfect—for a review of those, see Strunk & White’s On Writing Well.

4) Breath/breathe: We take a deep breath before diving into water. (Breath is a noun.) But when the body draws air into our lungs we breathe. (Breathe is a verb.) They can’t be used interchangeably.

5) Jewelry is often misspelled as jewelery. That may partially be due to a difference between the American spelling of the word and the UK version (jewellery). For the purpose of writing in the U.S., stick with jewelry.

6) Lose/loose: Another set of words that befuddles us. The difference is in their use. Lose is a verb. (I almost never lose the car keys.) Loose is an adjective. (A tiger got loose from the zoo.)

7) Forty: It’s easy to see why some people have trouble with this one. We spell the number 4 as ‘four. So why shouldn’t we spell a related number (40) as ‘fourty. But we don’t. The correct spelling is forty.

8) Affect/effect: Oh, this is a nasty one. Unless we remember that, again, there’s the verb/noun difference. Affect is a verb. (Does the weather affect you?) Effect is a noun. Think of special effects in movies.

9) Their, there, they’re: We can untangle these if we just stop and sort out the meanings. ‘Their indicates possession. (We visited their cabin in the woods.) ‘There points to a place. (The cabin is over there.) ‘They’re is short for ‘they are. (They’re going hiking in the woods tomorrow.) Whenever you’re unsure, try substituting ‘they are in the sentence. If it works, you’ve eliminated the other two.

10) Truly…never truely. You drop the -e to form this adverb.

Since spelling checkers won’t catch many of these errors, it’s up to us writers to keep a wary eye for these easy-to-make mistakes. But if your eye just refuses to catch slipups in your stories, find a friend, family member or professional editor with an eagle eye to point them out to you. The cleaner your manuscripts, the more likely you are to find a publisher willing to work with you!

Kathryn Johnson, aka Mary Hart Perry, teaches fiction writing at The Writer’s Center and for the Smithsonian Associates in Washington, DC. She is a member of Mystery Writers of America, The Historical Novel Society, Sisters in Crime, and Novelists Inc.

Love Christmas Blog #2 - Deck the Hearts by Rachelle Ayala

Hey everyone, I’m so excited and proud to be included in this year’s Authors Billboard Christmas collection. My story comes from the Christmas Carol, Deck the Halls. It is dedicated to Marilyn Wons, a fan who also picked Deck the Halls as her favorite Christmas carol.

I chose Deck the Halls and changed it to Hearts, because there were hearts being decked when it came to my opposites-attract couple, a jolly Christmas lover named Holly who meets Grouchy Gordon Gills, a man who hates Christmas.

Writing Deck the Hearts was an exercise in story structure and creativity. Because my song is in the public domain, I was able to use the verses as Chapter Names. I created 12 chapters, starting with Chapter 1, Deck the Hall with boughs of Holly, Chapter 2, ‘Tis the Season to be Jolly, Chapter 3, Don we now our gay apparel, etc. until I covered 12 verses.
I had no idea how I would get things to match, but incredibly, my characters seemed to respond very well to this “strict dictation of what they were to do, and using those verses as suggestions, my story leaped out from the very first scene where Holly Jolly, the heroine was decking Gordon Gills mansion with boughs of holly to the last when “heedless of the wind and weather Holly and Gordon celebrate cozily in her cabin and solve the family mystery.

I believe you will enjoy Holly and Gordon’s story while they fa, la, la, la, la from hatred (or at least annoyance) to love.
