For marketing purposes, one of my publicists asked me to think about why I stand out. That's a hard question to answer during fractured times filled with bombastic narcissists shouting LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME! It's almost better to NOT stand out. So maybe the question is, what is anti-special about me? You're only cool when you don't worry about being cool. It's a Catch-22.

I've had my moments. I rode a three-speed bicycle across England during a very rainy summer. When I read Wild by Cheryl Strayed, I related to her excitement (high) versus preparedness ratio (low). I was an actress for twenty years, appearing in everything from Skin or Our Teeth by Thornton Wilder to Under Milkwood by Dylan Thomas. I have an awesome voice, discovered when I

When I finished Red Ruby Heart, I was happy with the ending, but as time went on, I grew curious about unresolved issues within the book. And I loved my characters! I missed Florine, Bud, Glen, and Dottie and I wanted to spend more time with them. So I began what is now titled Written on My Heart. What happened next surprised me and I was struck with the realization of how novel has its own life, its own surprises. (less)

Sometime, when I can't think beyond a certain passage, and that isn't often, I realize I've taken a wrong turn somewhere, or something is off. Sometimes it's the setting—something is out of place logistically—or sometimes it's trying to force a character to do something that the character wouldn't do. In those cases, I might write a scene that has nothing to do with anything just to shake off what's not happening. It's usually a goofy scenario featuring the characters. Other times, my fingers slow down on the keyboard and I know what or where I'm going is off. I stop and the character and I have a talk, and eventually, we carry on.(less)

Life on The Point

If you look closely at a map of the coast of Maine, you will notice the 'fingers' of granite points thrusting downward into the Atlantic Ocean. Those points were caused by a mighty glacier that scraped across Maine eons ago. "The rocky coast of Maine" is just that. I remember scraping my legs on barnacles when I swam off the three round rocks standing side by side along the shore of the cottage wh Read more of this blog post »

“Here, sorrow was allowed to perch and settle inside of me, instead of digging its claws into my heart and flapping its wings, trying to rip it out.”
Morgan Callan Rogers, Red Ruby Heart in a Cold Blue Sea

“Would missing her ever go away? I didn't see how. It was different now, like a deep splinter grown over by skin. I could see it but I couldn't get to it, yet if I pressed it, my heart broke every time.”
