Wendy, the Wicked Witch

Wendy the Wicked Witch Recently launched in Kindle and currently doing a free promo. A delightful children's story told in rhyme with a clear moral message: to respect the rights of animals - and witches, of course.

hydrokinesis

After meeting a weird old man who turns out to be her mentor, and later a ghostly apparition who says she is her spirit guardian, 14-year-old Trinity is not only completely flummoxed, but also rather annoyed to be singled out or 'chosen' in this manner. She just wants to be a normal teenager and get on with her life. It's only when one of her best friends is kidnapped by demons in a ghastly attempt to lure her into their lair, that Trinity realises and begins to understand her special power of hydrokinesis. But will this ability to manipulate water be any use against actual demons? Kande S. Summers

The Reluctant Hero

The Reluctant Hero The Reluctant Hero by Neil Worrall

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Kids of today would be amazed to know how such publicity and fame happened, even if you didn’t want it, long before the days of the Internet and mobile phones. Yet it still happened to one ordinary boy.

More Sausages

More Sausages: Every Dog's Dream More Sausages: Every Dog's Dream by Arabella Bumfuzzle

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Carter, a young collie dog, loses his happy, comfortable home simply because his 2 elderly owners are forced to move into a care home and are no longer allowed to keep a pet.

Carter is moved to a dogs rescue kennel and tries hard to fit in, even though he misses his owners and all the home comforts he used to get. He’s advised by the other dogs to be good and try to look playful and happy, and never to snap, growl or howl when the people come to choose new dogs and give them new homes.

He is told by his trainer that he is much too fat and ugly to be wanted by any new family and, after that, he really tries hard with his daily walks and diet, even though he yearns for a sausage or two just now and again.

After slimming down and looking much more presentable, Carter does find a new home with a family who seem ideal and treat him well. Unfortunately, he is constantly tormented by their other pet a Mynah bird who imitates every sound he makes and even lands on his head. Of course, instinct prevails and Carter eats the annoying bird which seems to be daring him to anyway. He is immediately returned to the dogs rescue as a ‘bad dog. His doggy friends laugh and say they knew he would be back, as he has so much more to learn.
After a few more trials, Carter manages to escape from the dogs rescue, and that’s when he finds his forever home with another elderly couple on a farm.

I like the way this book shows that animals are not just playthings for children, but they also have feelings, like grief and loneliness. There are also messages here for grown-ups who choose dogs for their children to consider. Please be fair to a young dog in a new environment. Why put him in the same space as a rabbit or a chicken?

A lovely book, both informative and touching. I would like to see this in print.
