Journalist and a biologist, his works in Portuguese have been published in more than 22 countries and have been widely translated. Couto was born Ant贸nio Em铆lio Leite Couto.
He won the 2014 Neustadt International Prize for Literature and the 2013 Cam玫es Prize for Literature, one of the most prestigious international awards honoring the work of Portuguese language writers (created in 1989 by Portugal and Brazil).

An international jury at the Zimbabwe International Book Fair called his first novel, Terra Son芒mbula (Sleepwalking Land), "one of the best 12 African books of the 20th century."

In April 2007, he became the first African author to win the prestigious Latin Union Award of Romanic Languages, which has been awarded annually in Italy sinc Journalist and a biologist, his works in Portuguese have been published in more than 22 countries and have been widely translated. Filho de portugueses que emigraram para Mo莽ambique nos meados do s茅culo XX, Mia nasceu e foi escolarizado na Beira. Com catorze anos de idade, teve alguns poemas publicados no jornal Not铆cias da Beira e tr锚s anos depois, em 1971, mudou-se para a cidade capital de Louren莽o Marques (agora Maputo).
Iniciou os estudos universit谩rios em medicina, mas abandonou esta 谩rea no princ铆pio do terceiro ano, passando a exercer a profiss茫o de jornalista depois do 25 de Abril de 1974. Trabalhou na Tribuna at茅脿 destrui莽茫o das suas instala莽玫es em Setembro de 1975, por colonos que se opunham 脿 independ锚ncia. Foi nomeado diretor da Ag锚ncia de Informa莽茫o de Mo莽ambique (AIM) e formou liga莽玫es de correspondentes entre as prov铆ncias mo莽ambicanas durante o tempo da guerra de liberta莽茫o. A seguir trabalhou como diretor da revista Tempo at茅 1981 e continuou a carreira no jornal Not铆cias at茅 1985.
Em 1983 publicou o seu primeiro livro de poesia, Raiz de Orvalho, que inclui poemas contra a propaganda marxista militante. Dois anos depois demitiu-se da posi莽茫o de diretor para continuar os estudos universit谩rios na 谩rea de biologia.

Al茅m de ser considerado um dos escritores mais importantes de Mo莽ambique, 茅 o escritor mo莽ambicano mais traduzido. Em muitas das suas obras, Mia Couto tenta recriar a l铆ngua portuguesa com uma influ锚ncia mo莽ambicana, utilizando o l茅xico de v谩rias regi玫es do pa铆s e produzindo um novo modelo de narrativa africana. Terra Son芒mbula, o seu primeiro romance, publicado em 1992, ganhou o Pr茅mio Nacional de Fic莽茫o da Associa莽茫o dos Escritores Mo莽ambicanos em 1995 e foi considerado um dos doze melhores livros africanos do s茅culo XX por um j煤ri criado pela Feira do Livro do Zimbabu茅.

Na sua carreira, foi tamb茅m acumulando distin莽玫es, como os pr茅mios Verg铆lio Ferreira (1999, pelo conjunto da obra), M谩rio Ant贸nio/Funda莽茫o Gulbenkian (2001), Uni茫o Latina de Literaturas Rom芒nicas (2007) ou Eduardo Louren莽o (2012).
