"Liked the writing. Melbourne, Fla during the real estate meltdown is a terrific setting and very well drawn. The dialogue is testosterone-driven, except for a few discordant occasions when bikers, hit men and junkies start acting like philosophy prof" Read more of this review »

"Joe Pan's debut novel (but not a debut writer) Florida Palms weaves a complex tale which is part coming of age, part drug culture, part Florida man, and a whole lot of character development and explorations of the consequences of choices. Pan's story" Read more of this review »

“I feel for the father, for a feeling of father,
I send out a cry, I am up when I hear my uncle
come through the door of the family house,
with the cherry tree out front, past midnight,
he walks up the stairs, then down the stairs,
and I’m the rock-a-bye baby in his arms.”

“I have since betrayed her
with a facility closer to my home
my burden too great to wheel
three extra blocks forsaking
communion for convenience

there I wash and fold with true
toilers nonowners fabric slaves
loveless and rightfully so
we share no confidences
only questions like complaints

my devotion to repetition
precision creases
organized by roy g biv
all underground all unnoticed
my order private
stop asking me to do yours”

“This is why we can’t have nice things:
bears chase the bulls while China shops.
Ah, unbearable lightness of bling!

Everyone waits for one-eyed kings.
The sharpest corners wait for shins.
This is why we can’t have nice things.”
