The Ambulist
My debut novel, a literary thriller called The Ambulist, has just been released by Beat&track - my own publishing enterprise. It's a limited edition, and if readers buy it from my own website , they get a signed and numbered copy; it's also out on Kindle on Amazon.
The Ambulist is the man who walks forever.
Through the plains and vales of Northumberland,
across fell and river, mountain and
moorland, the nomad’s titanic figure is pursued
by people determined to discover his past. He
might be an innocent traveller, a terrorist or the
Second Coming of Christ; who can say?
John Queedy is the painfully self- conscious,
damaged young man who will become his
protégé. M. is the time-worn proprietor of a failing
regional newspaper who needs a story, a big
story, to save his career.
The Arnesens inhabit a Borders tower-house:
indulgent, overflowing with love, music and art,
they are witnesses to the First Miracle.
Gaunt is a cynical hack, an exposer of fraud, and
weak of virtue.
Albie Rooi is the hunter.

Walking with Giants
As I start work on a new book, Alfred's Britain, for publication in 2017, I'm also busy promoting In the Land of Giants. I'll be at the Maryport Litfest on Saturday 1th November and at Books on Tyne on November 26th. I'll also be signing copies at Cogito Books in Hexham on Saturday 5th December. Looking into the New Year, I will also be appearing at Words by the Water in Keswick. This year, a highlight was having dinner (at Words by the Water) with Helen Macdonald (H is for Hawk), Dame Shirley Williams and Irma Kurtz: interesting company! I'm also typesetting my novel, The Ambulist, for a special limited edition due out next Summer (2016). Anyone wanting signed copies of In the Land of Giants, there are plenty at Waterstones in Newcastle.

Wisdom of Trees now out
My new book, the Wisdom of Trees, is just out; I'm busy with launch events and signings and enjoying seeing the hard copy on my own shelves. It's a very personal look at trees and how humans have grown up with them on their great cultural journey. It's full of anecdotes, quirky facts and my own marvelling at just how complex and marvellous trees are.
