On page 101, the judge says, "there are matters one simply cannot get drawn into, that one must distance oneself from, if the price is not life and limb." What does this mean? "if the price is not life and limb"?

I just finished the book today, and even though I liked the book a lot I don't understand why Hanna killed herself. I mean i understand its difficult to live a normal live when you have been imprisoned for 18 years but I don't understand the purpose ending for this particular story?
