Why was the Guide written in English? There is no mention of a Babel fish equivalent that translates written text. Also, how did Ford Prefect come to know that the Earth was going to be demolished?

But the punchlines poke fun at real things or reveal some little gem of truth. What is so funny about a depressed robot? Or a ship that always does the most improbable thing?
