How does this book compare to the likes of Any Human Heart, Sweet Caress and Restless, all of which I really enjoyed?

Elizabeth Preston It's similar in tone/story line in some ways to several of those. However, I have yet to read any of Boyd's that match Any Human Heart for me - I just adored that book. I have also read Sweet Caress and Restless. I would say I felt this was about the same as Sweet Caress, with Restless above both of them; but all a bit below Any Human Heart. (less)

I could not find what motivated Vandenbrook. Lysander offers several suggestions (revenge on his father-in-law, to seek self-importance) but his reason is never divulged. Did I miss it?

Beverly He was being blackmailed by Lysander's mother. He was a pedophile and there were pictures to prove it. Was Munro in cohorts with Vandenbrook, there's two allusions in the book to complicity between them and devoting the 2nd last chapter where Munro slips up is surely a clue?
