In every other place I've looked up the symbolism it all has connotations that are positive, like stability, hardness and endurance. Dream dictionaries say it represents strength and unity.

I think the author meant that her sentence is set in stone? I had a feeling that it was her fate but I can't find anything that supports that thought.(less)

No question really. I am part way through this book, it's so visceral I have been 3 parts convinced to not go any further. It is a fascinating read in terms of the setting, the weather, the landscape and the housing! I was drawn to this read because of that. (less)

We had our book club meeting today and we are ALL perplexed about what could be going on in Chapter Twelve. It was on page 278 and 279, a two page chapter, and none of us could figure out where these characters ever came in during the book. Do you have an idea so that I can update our club members?

I don't think the title fits the story. No one is given "last rites," and no one is buried. I understand that it is trying to symbolize the death associated with this story, but isn't the choice of title a bit misleading to the reader?

Would you teach Burial Rites as a senior secondary text i.e. to 16 yo readers for the purpose of studying narrative form, craft, literature technique?
