Lisa Oh, no, spices make perfect sense, but we have a whole BUNCH of them. My Mom probably only has a dozen bottles, so it's no big deal. Canned goods or refrigerator seems a bit OCD to me.

Orinoco Womble (tidy bag and all) I have loads of spices myself, but mostly bought in bulk (I'm a curry freak). I keep them in transparent glass bottles upcycled from other things (jams etc). No need to alphabetise when you can see at a glance what's where, I guess.

Lisa True. We don't need bulk of anything (except parsley & chili powder, for some reason), so McCormick bottles are fine. I also have a turny thing from Pampered Chef on our counter for the dozen or so we use the most - and those aren't alphabetical. I do prefer that our movies, vinyl LPs, and CDs be alphabetically arranged to aid in finding them.

Carol spices by category, then alphabetically within category. Size of category is determined by the size of my shelves.
As for books, mostly by genre then alphabetically by author within genre. Some of my genres are kind of weird I guess. And Vorkosigan genre is , chronologically by story line.

Katie Oh I totally alphabetize my spices (though not my cans). We have so many bottles that it would take twice as long to find and replace if they weren't alphabetized.

Katie But then I also alphabetize my books, so I guess I'm That Kind of Person.
