When I read Fangirl, I didn't think Carry On sounded very similar to Harry Potter, but in Carry On, I definitely saw the resemblance. But the plot does deviate quite a bit from Harry Potter, and it is a different story. Carry On is humorous and adorable and exciting with some amazing characters. If for no other reason, you must read this book for Baz and Penelope. Simon himself was boring in comparison.

I thought this book was just 'okay'. I went in with very high expectations, as I LOVED Fangirl, but this book was really underwhelming.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the read. I liked the character building, I even liked the complex romance/friendship triangle that was involved, and even the story line was fine.

I'll just explain what I didn't like about it then. As is popular in YA fiction right now, the chapters changed point of view. I don't have any problems with that, as long as eventually th I thought this book was just 'okay'. I went in with very high expectations, as I LOVED Fangirl, but this book was really underwhelming.

I'll just explain what I didn't like about it then. As is popular in YA fiction right now, the chapters changed point of view. I don't have any problems with that, as long as eventually the characters meet, which most of them did in this book. We get Simon (the main protagonist), his girlfriend, his nemesis and his best friend. But then there is this mysterious person, 'Lucy', who gives us (the reader) more information than the book characters have. That's a pretty cool concept in and off itself, BUT...

They don't ever get the information! We keep mentally yelling at them 'No!! Don't do that!' which is a good thing in a book, because it means that it's engaging and you are identifying with the characters, but there are certain things they never find out. Things that they deserve to know.
And I'm left very cranky that they will never know about this.

Anyway, this is my honest opinion. It was a nice read, but I only give it three stars because of the frustration I am left with. It's a nice companion to Fangirl, and I admire Rainbow Rowell for how she wrote this book, that's supposed to be the final of a series, making it feel like it actually WAS the final book in a series, without it actually being one. (if you can understand this weird sentence) I understood and appreciated the Harry Potter references and how it was still a very different story.

I'll definitely keep reading Rainbow Rowell's books, I just wasn't satisfied by how everything came together in this one. Please share your opinions. I'd love to discuss this further. ...more
