Julian Barnes' latest, The Sense of an Ending, is a quiet novella of intrigue. It is captivating for its equal share of simplicity and suspense. Its tension is built on a subtle feeling that something is not right. From early pages it is clear that Barnes' narrator is unreliable and that his perspective of events may be ajar. Barnes frequently delves into philosophy and psychology without losing track of the story. The language is sparse; the author does nothing in excess.

I read the book in less than a day. I suppose it was especially appealing as a person who is around the same age as the narrator. It is a book that in sparse prose and only around 160 pages conveys a profound story.

Gosh this is a tough one. I really did enjoy reading this book and the writing was lovely. I also enjoyed the spinning out of ideas about history and memory. But, ultimately, for me the plot was disappointing and many-pages-long drumroll that sustained the pace of the story landed onto into a (ta-da!) cornball ending. I had the same experience that I sometimes have in movies when I am enjoying myself throughout but I walk out mildly disappointed. I would have given Barnes ten Booker prizes for F

Man Booker shortlist 2011. NPR review says it's--by far--the clear winner. I've had some hits and misses with the booker books in this past--some favorites and a few that were decidedly 'eh'. Anyhow, this sounds good.

I haven't read any Barnes since I was blown away by A History of the World in 10.5 Chapters, so maybe this isn't as good as his others, but I was blown away by it.
